TO DRIVE HTHE SHIP

Page 121 text:

FURNI H THE PO ER.. The Snipes, the Black Gang, whatever our name We're always on the job which is never the same. Whether it's wiper or throttleman, repairman or electrician We're proud of our ship and the department weire in. Inspections and exercises, ORI and INSURVE to boot We polished 'em all off with a clout on the snoot. We got the second hash mark on our Engineering 'LEM It was cooperation and teamwork that brought this to be. We prepared for our cruise, but not with much muse As we patched up one hole, another sprung loose. Underway at last we headed for WESTPAC Knowing it'd be next year before we'd be back. We made the Orient circuit with no major breakdown Save for the coke machine that had a zero ground. It was amazing how well she did stay together As typhoon warnings were standard for weather. Home soon we were, all safe and all sound And went off on liberty or homeward leave bound. It wasn't long, though, 'fore we returned to our mission Of putting ole BREMERTON out of commission. As we part to the winds, to the East or the West We'll remember Engineering as being the best. Weill forget all the heat and the smell of the oil But not so the friends we made while we toiled.

RO EO D i V i s i o n Romeo Division, R Division or Repair Division has as its primary concern the ship's water tight integrity or its ability to remain aHoat. This division also operates three workshops-the metal shop, pipe shop, and carpenter shop. The metal shop is responsible for repairs to the ship's hull. The pipe shop repairs and maintains the ship's piping, while the carpenter shop is responsible for all damage control equipment and wood working. Among other duties, it numbers the raising and lowering of the anchor as one of the most important. Assisting in launching, receiving and fueling of the helicopter is another. The division is also responsible for the operation and upkeep of the ship's diving equipment, and the supervision of other divisions in damage control, atomic, biological and chemical defense. All are important duties directly related to Bremertonls readiness!
