When steam engines were adopted to drive ships, the age of sail came to an abrupt halt, and the engineers moved to the front. Today, the Bremerton is powered by four main engines capable of 120,000 HP and speeds in excess of 32 knots. The job of making the ship go-controlling the heartbeat so that she can respond to the commands of the Conning Officer-is immensly complicated. The Engineering Departmenfs divisions operate, repair and maintain all the ship's propulsion machinery, both steam boilers and emergency diesels. At the same time they furnish light, electric power, ventilation, heat, refrigeration, compressed air and fresh waterg all the utilities that make life aboard the ship possible and com- fortable.
