One of Mrs. Barkers favorite outside interests is tennisg a sport at which she excels. In the above photograph, she is shown with her husband holding trophies which they won in a recent invitational tournament. ehitatiun TO: Mrs. Harold Barker FROM: The Senior Class SUBJECT 1 Dedication of the Milestone DATE: june, 1960 We are dedicating this 1960 Milestone to a person who has been much more than a teacher to us. She has been advisor, councilor, and friend to all members of our class. Through her unceasing efforts, she helped turn our junior Prom into one of the high lights of our school life. During our junior Class meetings, it was often her in- valuable advice that proved the correct solution to our problems. In deepest appreciation for all you have done for the Class of 1960, we dedicate this Milestone to you, Mrs. Harold Barker. MR. ERNEST C. HATFIELD Principal MESSAGE TO THE SENIOR CLASS We hope that we have aroused in you a thirst for one of the great gifts of education -the flame of aspiration and the ambition to dream, to be, to do - each according to his talents. This gift also endows each with the will to continue the struggle no matter how great the odds nor how certain may seem defeat. May the education you have received and that which you are about to begin give you independence of character, an intelligently discriminating mind, and lead you progres- sively along moral, industrial, and intellectual roads. Wearing Army asbestos suits, club members carefully checked and re-checked the ignition cir- cuits leading to the poised rocket. Finally everything was ready. Six persons braced themselves in the observation bunker. The others retired to a hill about half-a-mile distant. Carlow turned the key to switch on the circuit and began the countdown: four, three, two, one, zero .... Nothing happened. N Second Failure Thisiexperience was repeated once 'more a half hour later. Embarrassed and perplexed, the long-faced club members tried to figure out the cause of the two failures. We found it! Dr. Wheeler announced a moment later. The dry cell batteries were not pro- viding sufficient current to ig- nite the fuel trigger. He and Griffin quickly produced a 12- volt, wet-cell battery from his car. - Carlow repeated the count- down. An Army photographer stood braced Behind the bunker, camera at ready. lfhird Try . . . D 0 -0 The idea of the Branford Rocket Club was originally conceived by john Milici in early 1958. He shared this idea with us, and we were so enthused by it that the Rocket Club was formed within a week. The original members were John Milici, Tom Hines. Bob Underwood, Dick Griffin, and Dave Harrison. We attempted to have weekly meetings and spent most of the first few months in the Branford Library which was kind enough to order a few books which we needed. Soon we realized that an adult advisor was necessary. For sev' eral weeks we considered adults who might help, and finally. by unanimous vote, we elected to ask Mr. Chester Carlow, This was the wisest decision a group like ours could have made. Mr. Carlow began working with us, and we started to make concrete progress on our rocket. Archaeopteryx fhrst birdi, By the end of the sum- mer of 1958, Archaeopteryx was finally designed and testing had begun, We lost one of our members. as john Milici left for private school, but we gained another adult advisor, Dr. George W'heeler, a physicist at Yale University. By the time we became juniors we had settled down to a careful testing program. as we worked to eliminate all bugs from our rocket. The junior mid-year exams came and went, and Archaeopteryx was almost ready to launchg but we couldnt find a safe launching site. Finally Representative Giamo helped us, and we obtained permission to launch the rocket on Memorial Day. 1959. at Camp A. P. Hill, Virginia. Its success was one of the most exciting things that had ever happened to any of us, Mr. Carlow had to leave on June 19, 1959. VUE: miss him not only as an advisor. but as one of our best personal friends. At that time Mr. Frederick Laing was kind enough to oder his assistance and we went about planning a new rocket with him and Dr. Vfheeler as advisors. XX'e also took in Brian Deevey as a new member when Tom Hines left Branford High to attend private school. At present, we have several new fuels that have been success- fully tested. An elaborate test stand has been made. and we are working on obtaining material for the body of the rocket. radio. and the necessary equipment. lf we can obtain these, our next rocket will be twenty feet long, have three stages, and be designed to go up about ten miles. lf not. it will have been drastically scaled down by the time you read this. No matter what happens at our launching this summer. none of us will forget what has been one of the most wonderful experiences of our lives. the Branford Rocket Club. 14 R NIOR THE DRAMATIC ASSOCIATION BRANFORD HIGH SCHOOL pre -.L nl The Semor Class K I N D L A D Y Fnduy December 4 1959 815 PM nl II 1 X 5 Xrlrnxssxc n S1 HH Now Peter nor that Amencan' L. 1' Snll goxng Don t you want ro know why I never see anyone?
