BRANFORD HIGH Serroot Super-wrntendent s Message I'o the Graduates of the Class of 1943 Recently one of the wealthrest men rn Amerrca dred The taxes on hrs estate were so great that a very great deal of what he owned had to be sold to produce the necessary cash to pay hrs rnherrtance taxes You are all famrlrar wrth the old New England sayrng Three generatrons from shrrt sleeves to shrrt sleeves whrch referred to so many cases where one man labored hard all hrs lrfe to create a fortune whrch all too frequently was frrttered away by the next two generatrons because whrle they had learned how to enjoy lrfe and spend money they had never been taught to work and to depend upon themselves to supply therr own needs The vast publrc debt necessarrly berng created to finance thrs war can only mean srnce rt must be pard off some day that rn the future taxes rather than rndolence and extravagance wrll tend to reduce the sons and daughters of even the very wealthy rn a few generatrons to the shrrtsleeve condrtron referred to rn the old sayrng quoted UNLESS they shall have become trarned through educatron to be able to take care of themselw es The wrsest parents have long recognrzed that the most valuable rnherrtance one can provrde for ones chrldren rs a sound and thorough educa tron that wrll fit them to adjust themselves to the changrng and drffrcult problems of the future as they arrse Class of 1943 you go forth from these portals rnto a world reduced by war to such a state of chaos that truly may rt be sard that the most valuable asset you can hase regardless of the wealth of your parents rs a sound educatronal trarnrng that wrll qualrfy you to meet wrth confidence and to master the drffrcult condrtrons whrch you and your generatron must meet and drspose of All the evrdence rndrcates that the Bran ford Publrc Schools provrde such a trarnrng very recent rnformatron showed that a re cently graduated alumnus was on the dean s lrst rn a consrderable number of the hrghest rankrng colleges rn varrous wrdespread sectrons of the country so many of our grad uates who have entered the armed forces have been advanced rn rank that rt seems more than reasonable to belreve that there too the trarnrng recerved rn the Branford Publrc Schools was a heavrly contrrbutrng factor rn therr success many of our graduates and undergraduates who have entered rndustry rn areas rn whrch they had recerved pre paratory publrc school trarnrng have also been spoken of frequently by therr employers as performrng commendable servrce Class of 1943 you too hare had the opportunrty of garnrng the same thorough trarnrng I am sure the,great majorrty of you avarled yourself of that opportunrty Therefore I say to you that although the path ahead of you rs more drffrcult than that any graduatrng class I have ever known has had to trlvel I belreve rn my heart and soul that you lrl-ce those of your classmates who haxe tlready been called to therr drffrcult assrgnments and lrke the alumnr who haxe so shortly preceded you wrll prove to be more than the equal of whatever brtter Dame Fortune has rn store for you no matter how drlfrcult rt may be To you and to those of your classmates who cannot be here to recerse rn person the drploma they have earned may I say that rt seems to me the sun rs shrnrng much more brrghtly upon Allred arms today than was the case only a short year ago and that my heart rs full of hope and farth that rn the not too drstant future we may haxe our loved ones back wrth us and begrn the task of burldrng a better world for ourselves and posterrty Go forth Class of 1943 clad rn the wonderful confidence rdealrsm and strength of well trarned Amerrcan Youth and have no fear you wrll successfully surmount all obstacles Srncerely RAYMOND E Prrvrcrrfxrtr fl 9 -n ' f - . . . .
