i GETTING SMART They said that one day we’d thank them, thank them all. Thank them for all the tests, the essays, the homework. I remember those late-night marathon writing sessions, staying up ’til two or three in the morning writing that 5-7 page term paper for Ms. Moran that I just never got around to writing because it wasn’t due ’til . . . Then of course, there was the time I read Great Expectations in one night because I forgot to buy the Cliff Notes and no one else was home. Above all. I’ll never forget the sheer terror everytime Mr. Goldman handed out one of his algebra quickies. The sweat broke and the hand started to tremble. I never thought I would survive. I would have to drop out, but I did. Everytime. So did all my friends. So now that the terrors of getting smart in High School are almost over and it’s time to face the horrors of college, I remember that they said, “Someday you’ll thank us,’’ and I do. I’m ready to move. 18
