GETTING PROMMED On the night of May 1 , 1981 250 couples gathered at the Lantana in Randolph. Rather than their usual Friday night outfits of jeans, t-shirts and sneakers, these couples were dressed in formal attire. The gentle- men wore suits and tuxedos, and the ladies wore gowns. The well-dressed pairs were there for Braintree’s Junior Prom. The couples enjoyed a full course dinner and then danced to the music of the new wave group Lines. The many weeks that were spent in prep- aration for the prom proved to be well worth it. Everyone experienced the best Friday night of their lives. % MAY 1, 1981 LANTANA 7:00 - 12:00 $40.00 LINES (Bottom left) Cindy Tutty and her date. GETTING HERE We were too young to young to remember our birth years, but the names, places and events of 1963 and 1964 are part of our heri- tage and mark the beginning of our place in history. The assassination of John F. Kennedy was the major event of 1963, the year in which some of us were born. Flis untimely death shocked both the nation and the world and was a personal loss to many. Equally shocking was the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby in Dallas two days later. 1 963 was also a landmark year in the Civil Rights Movement with the Freedom March in Washington D.C. by a quarter of a million people. Martin Lu- ther King and Governor George Wallace of Alabama were other prominent figures of the era as they opposed each other on the issues of integration and equal rights for minority citi- zens. In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was signed by Lyndon Baines Johnson who succeeded John Kennedy as President. Vietnam was becoming B a familiar word as the military became more heavily involved in the support of the South Vietnamese government and U.S. ships were attacked by the North Vietnamese in the Ton- kin Gulf. Those of us lucky enough to be born in 1 964 can take pleasure in knowing that this was the year the Beatles invaded the U.S. American teens fell in love with the sound of the Beatles and many groups tried to imitate them.
