By means of assurance and encouragement, their disfigured visions of school life changed and they became more involved. 45 a result of a changing class, Linda Murphy was selected as the new leader. Thus ended the second year, and it was good. 11 What do little blue tickets. Mugs and Long Stemmed Glasses, Roast Beef Dinners, Tyjo Hundred decked out couples. The members of the class were more embodied with visions of involvement in school life and activities. They started to shape their destinies and their general directions in life were being charted. Thus ended the third year, and it was good. 15 upremacy was reached in their last year when seniors, the ultimate of all students, came to form. Armed with ambition, responsibility, and an awareness of pride and self-importance, they began preparing and accepting their new roles in life. The play was presen- ted in a humorous yet serious manner. Auntie Marne was superbly portrayed by Lisa Harrington. Lisa has been a cast member of dozens of plays, and exhibited excellence in her perfor- mance. Mary Ascher, Mark Dipola, and Donna Santac- kos were also excellent in their supporting roles. This fine production was a reflection of the sincere efforts of all involved. 110 . .i Ill 112 Senior Seminar is an art course for those senior students who have exceptional artistic talent. This course helps to prepare the student for further edu- cation in an art career. Field trips are great oppor- tunities for art students to acquire reference material, which is very important to an artist. On Friday, October 15, 1976, the Senior Seminar students (taught by Miss Sundberg and Mr. Larson), and a few others from Mr. Larson’s Drawing and Painting classes, journeyed to Boston to fill their sketch hooks with “goodies” (as Mr. Larson would say). Once in Bos- ton, the students were free to wander about Haymarket Square, the Quincy Market and the North End. There were many unusual sites to be seen if one was in the right place at the right time. For instance, at about 1:15 in the afternoon, a bicentennial parade had formed and was being filmed by TV channel 4 as it moved along the street. Some of the other odd sites included organ grinders, street vendors selling quahogs, newly washed clothes hanging out to dry between buildings, and rabbits hanging in the market windows. Some students were fortunate enough to receive cheese sam- ples and Mr. Larson got a gigantic pumpkin, free. Many of the students bought fruit, cold cuts and fresh bread that were being sold everywhere. Overall, everyone had a good time exploring and sketching the unusual places and people in Boston. 113 DID YOU KNOW . . . If you were on the top of a tower of seniors stacked head to toe you would he times hifth- er than the John Hancock Tower. The senior class weighs over 5 tons (before lunch}. If you had perfect attendance over the past 4 years you would hare spent 259,200 minutes in school. 115 CRAZY DAY Tuesday, October 12, 1976 Today was “crazy day. Students wore crazy clothes, socks, shoes, hats, glasses, and facial make-up. Among all the crazy what-nots we have seen today, everyone will agree that the craziest was Kathy Mc- Alarney. She wore a pair of faded blue gym shorts, a white shirt imprinted with the declarative phrase, T GOT CLASS ’, with a large police whistle around her neck. This was crazy enough, bu t the craziest part of her outfit was her footwear, consisting of two black roller skates with pom-poms attached to the shoelaces. An elevator pass was issued to Kathy to enable her to roll safely to her various engagements. Today ' s theme was “Drive Framingham South crazy. ' ” If Framingham South could have seen our “crazy day”, they probably would have gone crazy. FIFTIES DAY Wednesday, October 13, 1976 Today was “fifties day”. The fad was to wear clothes that were in style during the 1950’s. Nostalgic clothes, such as bobby socks, school jackets, saddle shoes and rolled-up dungarees were worn. Also, many girls wore rosy red lipstick. The theme for today was “Push Framingham South way back to the fifties.” A waltz lesson was held in the gym after school. Students waltzed to the song, “I Could Have Danced All Night. ” 116 CLASS DA Y Thursday, October 14, 1976 Today was “class day . Students wore clothes corresponding to their class. The freshmen wore white, the sophomores wore green, the juniors grey, and the seniors black. The special attraction for today’s occasion was Chris Maggioli. Her attire included a pair of black boots, a pair of black shorts, a black shirt and a black mask. She also had a revolver in her hand. “Do you have a license for that gun, Chris?” The most appro- priate name we could give Chris was “The Black Widow. ” Watch out Framingham South; she’ll get ya. BM.S. DAY Friday, October 15, 1976 Today was “B.H.S. Day”. Students wore blue and white clothing along with headbands exclaiming “WAMPEM!’’. All the athletes wore their team uni- forms. An assembly was held so that the cheerleaders could pin white carnations on the football players’ shirts. A pep rally was held after school with per- formances by the cheerleaders, the band, the pep squad, and the majorettes. All the students who came had a chance to participate in the rally and show their school spirit and enthusiasm. Today’s theme was “WAMPEM!”. 117 118 119 120 121 122 BRAINTREE 27 FRAMINGHAM SOUTH 3 Senior Nominees Joan Shaw Sheila McCarthy Liisa Johnson Lisa Gallivan Norma Blanchard Richard Murphy, with 209 yards and 3 touchdowns led the h’amps to victory. 123 HOMECOMING DANCE “You ' re so witty, Mr. Carson!” 124 126 127 No Fire Here! Look at me, I ' m a fireman exclaimed Matthew. All the child- ren were very excited when Mr. Belanger, a fireman, came equip- ped with his fire engine to show the nursery school. The future B.H.S. students are a part of a teacher-student lab- oratory nursery school where the teachers are senior students. Terry Belanger had special activity and decided to bring in her father. He showed the group the hoses, lad- ders, and the firebell. The child- ren also participated by ringing the hell, climbing on the fire truck and wearing the firemen’s hats. It was not unusual to hear a preschooler asking Can I try too? Everyone wanted to join in on the fun. Mrs. Hutton told her classes that it was the first time that she had been that close to a fire engine. KENNED Y VISITS BHS Massachusetts’ Senior Se- nator Edward M. Kennedy visited Braintree High School on October 21 and addressed the Juniors and Seniors in the gym. Ken- nedy discussed many of the important issues of the up- coming election, and an- swered students’ questions. The Senator stressed the im- portance of political aware- ness and involvement on the part of the students with re- gards to the functioning of government on a local and national level. On October 30th, the Senior class sponsored a Halloween Dance at the High School gym. Costumes were worn by all attending, and music was provided by Rare Pleasure , a band composed of BHS students. Prizes were given for the ten best costumes with Mark McDonnell taking first place. Pie and pudding eating contests added to the crazi- ness of the evening. BHS JOINS THE BLOODLINE The Bloodmohile, sponsored by the Future Medical Club, was held in the Media Center this year. Members of the club typed out records, took temperatures of the donors, and served refreshments afterwards. Many Seniors participated, helping to produce a very success- ful blood drive. 132 SANTA ’S WORKSHOP Santa ’s Workshop began 1 6 years ago at East Jr. High School, and has since spread to the High School where many students participated in it. Donations started to arrive early for the children, and continued to come in until Christmas. Stu- dents donated broken or old toys, repaired them, and wrapped them in bright Christmas paper. The more active students dressed up as Santa’s elves and distributed the gifts to nearby hospitals for retarded and crippled children. 133 Annika Jenny Maria Halvarson - Sweden Yon have all helped me to make this year one that I’ll never forget. It has been a wonderful experience for me, and I have learned to love you and your country. I want you to know that if you ever come to Sweden, you are always welcome to visit me. I feel like this has become my second home and I know that when in the future I look at the map of the United States, I’ll only see the part around Boston and think hack to the happiest year in my life. Joey Mendoza - Philippines My AFS experience meant so much to me. I’ve learned the intrinsic value of friendship and savor the bitter-sweet taste of success. As I look back, retracing memories, I could feel no pain, only emptiness. For what was once, we now consider the past. I could only sigh and wish that time will stop and happenings to freeze . . . only to catch one precious memory. But the world must go on and it is for us to decide whether we want to drop out or hang to it. I feel that I’m “alive” again . . . Remember I love you all!!! Josie Fileccia - Italy The memory of my year in Braintree and the U.S.A., I shall treasure forever. I hope some of you will come to visit me in Italy. I will be a good friend to you as so many of you have been to me. I want to thank you, all my teachers, for your patience and kindness. Ciao! I hope to see you again. Tony Donelan - Columbia Each day, spent here in Braintree, brings many new friends and experiences. I am grateful for this opportu- nity to share our cultures. 134 Jose Antonio Rada - Chile All the impressions I have had of the U.S.A. since my arrival have been favorable. My opinion of the U.S.A. has risen enormously. The people who live here are great, with an admirable social and cultural develop- men t. Everyone is ready to help one another, as well as strangers, in every way possible. In summary, the U.S.A. is a great country, fully developed in every way, with wonderful people. Mattie Me hi Mrs. Mehl is the faculty co-ordinator for the foreign students at Braintree High School. She is also a depend- able friend, and she makes sure that all the students adapt well to living in Braintree. Mrs. Mehl, who speaks English, French and Spanish, is also the advisor of the A.F.S. Club. 135 FOREIGN STUDENTS A WARDS Many scholarships are distributed at graduation each year. This year, however, two Braintree High School Seniors received awards for academic excellence prior to graduation. On Homecoming Day, the Wamps defeated Framing- ham South by a score of 27 to 3, with outstanding efforts by seniors Richard Murphy, Kevin Buckley, Mike Brady, Paul Barry, John MacDonald, John Perry, and Paul Coyle. On Thanksgiving Day, the Wamps pulled off another great victory. After trailing 3 to 2 at half-time, Wamps’ quarterback Paul McGourty and the offense came alive and scored 28 points , leading the team to a 30 to 3 massacre over the Whiz Kids. Wamps loose a great leader . . . Coach Beck resigns. After 12 years as head coach of the BHS Varsity Football Team, Ed Beck, who is also a guidance counse- lor at the school, resigned after a winning season of 5-4-1.
