WAMPATUCK braintree high school braintree, massachusetts pusiic H6RAKV L . 0£:ld4 change without goals does not reap benefit. change is an important part of nature and of our lives, think how dull life would be if everything remained the same. change represents something different and unexpected, change is that which makes life a challenge. 2 in our society change occurs much faster than ever before, but only through change can we grow. li 1 ' rSJ T during the coming and going of everyday life, we seldom look to see the serene beauty of our world, reflections of life, visions of peace, come to us in moments of silence and solitude. 4 braintree high seniors engaged in a special project this year, through the peace corps school partnership program, we made it possible for a three-room elementary school to be built in togo, africa. our job was to raise $1,277.63 to pay for the building materials, to begin this venture, stationery was sold, following this, sixty seniors spent Sunday, january 27th, at zayre ' s taking inventory, these seniors volunteered their time and donated their earnings of $2.00 an hour to the partnership program, our funds totaled $1,283.86 — more than we needed! thanks to the help of many seniors, the building materials were paid for. the village of togo will supply the necessary land, labor, and teachers, and the children of that village will have a school. 7 e passageways trudge onward. 1 ' fr.NTii,:! Football Team tied for third place in the Bay State League. The team, led by Seniors Kenny Driscoll, Mark Hurrie, and Co-Captains Dave Swanton and Mark Griffith sparked the spirit which enabled the team to win the last 5 games to end the season with a record of 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. Ken Curran won the Doherty Award and Don DeRosa was named as next year’s captain. Soccer The Braintree High Soccer team had another successful year with 14 wins and 2 losses, making them the Bay State League Champs for the fifth consecutive year. Co-Captains Rick Neil and Neil Roberts helped to lead an outstanding team to victory upon victory. 142 ‘ Cross Country The Braintree High School Cross-Country team finished a fine season in the Bay State League, capturing third place with an overall record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Top runners for the Wamp squad were Co-Captains Senior Bill Roach, Junior Steve Palmer and Sophomore Joe Mathews. 144 145 146 The boys Basketball team came under the command of a new head coach this year, Dave Crook. This year’s team was led by Senior Captain Wayne Opie, who scored an average of 16 points a game and has proven himself as one of the best players B.H.S. has turned out. 147 The B.H.S. Hockey team had a great season this year. Among the victories were wins over Natick and Dedham. The team was led by coach Robert Vafides who could be seen on the sidelines enjoying a Nestle’s Crunch bar. jfl V Jm ' V if The Indoor Track team recorded its best seasonal work, 7-2 en route to its 3rd place finish in the Bay State League. Bill McBrine’s school record in the shot put established him as the best in the league. Co- captains Bill Roach and Craig Jordan both had productive seasons with Roach finishing 4th in class A. Next year’s team looks to be tough to beat as it will be paced by Jim Boyce, Dan Belcher and Mark Frisina. Indoor Track 151 152 From the experience gained in the first half of the season the Wamp Grapplers finished strong at 7-9 over-all. Manager Kathy Sharkey inspired the team to a 4-4 record for a 4th place finish in the Bay State League. Led by Gil Buthlay and Mike Richardi, this young squad looks forward to a prosperous season next year. Returning from an injury, Colin Kilrain along with his 1st year wrestler A1 Barese sparked the team to an 8th place finish in the South East Regionals. 9 153 The Braintree High Boy’s Gymnastics Team had another excellent season with a finishing record of 9-0. The team was led by co-captain Jeff Barlow — third place in vaulting, Mike McKinney — state champ on high bar, and 3rd place all- around with Bill Campbell finalist on the parallel bars. Other high scorers were Bill Dolphin and Richard Yazbeck. Congratulations to our 1974 State Champs. 155 Girls Gymnastics The Girls Gymnastics Team was led by senior captain Debbie Ellis, a member of the varsity squad since her sophomore year and recipient of the Harris Trophy. The girls worked their way to a year end record of 9-0, captured the Bay State League Championship, and went on to become State League Champions, to match the boys title. Since 1971 the B.H.S. girls gymnastics team have been undefeated, and now hold a 26-0 record. The girls are coached by Marjorie Smith and Sandra Hoyt. Field Hockey 1.58 This year the Girls’ Field Hockey team really outdid themselves with a fantastic win of the Bay State League Championship, first i n 17 years.
