WAMPATUCK ’73 Braintree High School Braintree, Massachusetts c ' ] i i i-3 ed- thayer public library Braintree, mass, oeisa We have hoped to instill in you two very essential qualities. We believe we have inspired you to do your best through classroom competition and on the playing field. We decry the poor quality of workmanship and disinterested attitude so common and urge you not to be satisfied with less than your very best effort. We have insisted on integrity, for only in being honest can you be fair. We must depend on one another not to cheat, steal, or be dishonest else we lead to our own destruction. If these are the cornerstones of your character you will succeed. William F. Young WILLIAM F. YOUNG, Superintendent of Schools During the past sixteen years, it has been my privilege to act as principal of Braintree High School. It has been a real rewarding experience because of the many wonderful young people I have met and the many fine teachers with whom I have worked and shared dreams and problems. Braintree is a fine community, and the general character and makeup of the student body reflects this fact. For, it is my opinion the home is where the moral values are inculcated, as a twig is bent, so will the Tree grow.” However, I do have a concern and a sadness for many of our young people today. I note an ever-increasing indifference, apathy, and lack of moral fiber among far too many of our young people. Too few will stand up and be counted. Paradoxically, there are a few students who show great concern, and lament the vast appar- ent indifference of the many. Maybe they are the leaders, and the hope for a future. I consider a good attitude to be basic to every- thing and real pride in one’s self and one’s accomplishment to be the keys to future happiness. Thank you and good luck! Sincerely, Walter K. Hjelm WALTER K. HJELM, Principal 9 EDWARD R. OAKMAN, Housemaster (2) 10 ' w; v JOHN R. The year ended with a 29-0 victory over arch-rival Mil- ton. There were several close games, including an 8-2 loss to Natick and a 7-6 victory over Wellesley. During the season, the talents of many stood out, including Kevin Murphy, Bob Thayer, Jack Casey, and Paul Demeo. 127 128 Cross Country Braintree High School’s 1972 varsity Cross-Country team finished a successful fall se ason in third place in the strong Bay State League, tying Wellesley with a 6-3 record. The team was capably led by Pete Hoffman and Paul Frazier, running in the second and fourth positions respectively. Rounding out the varsity were seniors Bob Lenzi and Bob Thompson. Junior Bill Roach set a school record on the new BHS home course (2.7 miles) with a time of 13:50. Steven Palmer, a promising sophomore running third, completed the varsity squad. 129 Soccer The B.H.S. varsity soccer team had another successful season this year. With a record of 13 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties, the Wamps again captured the Bay State League title for the 4th consecutive season. Co- captains Greg Kosmo and Mike Riley, along with forward Tom White- house and goalie Keith Micelli all helped in leading the Wamps to first place. Seniors Gary Lee, Bruce Birchall and Bob Lundgren also pro- vided the team with strong efforts on offense and defense. Eat your heart out next year, Mr. Carson! 131 I I I Boys Basketball The 72-73 Basketball Season was a most exciting one. Led by captains Bob Thayer and Rick Tonner this year’s team ended with a record of 12 wins and 7 losses. Each game brought heartstop- ping action and much credit is due to each member of the team. 132 133 134 135 1 Boys Gymnastics The 1973 BHS Gymnastics Team had another successful year with a final record of 9-0. As well as being the League Champions, the gymnas- tics team went on to win the State Championship title, the third consec- utive year it has done so. This year’s team was perhaps the finest ever at Braintree High as it surpassed the old team record by eight points. The seniors on the team included Peter Kormann the State All-Around Floor Exercise, and Vaulting Champion; Kent Anderson, third in the State All- Around competition; Paul Maduri, second on Rings in the State; Jim Laiosa, Bay State League Vaulting Champion; Brad Spinney, second place on Side Horse in the Bay State League. Tom St.Andre, and Arthur Masciarelli rounded out the team. - Hockey After a season of hard work (and crunching” games), the B.H.S. Hockey team ended the season with a record of 8 wins, 8 losses, and 2 ties. The team’s strength was a solid defense led by Brian Cusack, Bob McCormick, John Leroy, and Ken Doo- ley. These seniors along with center forward Rick Egan led the team to its fine season. ' m ■ i p H 139 1 141 I I I Indoor Track In comparison to last year’s team, the 72-73 Indoor Track squad stood better in 6 out of 9 events while holding its own in the remainder. The team was better — but so was the competi- tion. Outstanding senior runners were Peter Hoffman, who won 7 out of 9 races, and Alex Robertson, who tied the school record in the 45 yard high hurdles. 142 143 Wrestling The ’72-’73 season was a successful one for Braintree High School Wrestling. Ending the season with a record of five wins and three losses, Coach Richardi had several dependable senior wrestlers to call on. Chris Pacelli, Ed Beck, Walter Snow, Ted Newcomb, and Kevin Murphy provided a fine nucleus for the team, with Jack Casey and Mark Hill wrestling consistently all year. 146 Varsity had a very successful year. They won five games, lost one and tied two. They placed third in the league, a better record than past years. The varsity field hockey team coached by Mrs. Redmond was led by co- captains Deborah French and Nancy Hargadon. The seniors on the team included Chris Cardinale, Liz Ferraro, Carol Hayes, Janine Kazanoski, Barb MacDonald, Lynne McDonough, Carol Norton, Steph Snow, and Bobbie Tayne. High scorer for the team was sophomore Sue Paylor. 147 - Girl’s Basketball The Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team started off the season well with six straight wins and finished with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Co-cap- tains Lynne Swindler and Debby LeVangie led the squad which con- sisted of five seniors. They were Debbie French, Karen Me Grath, Carol Norton, Susan O’Neil, and Donna Blanchard. 148 149 Girl’s Gymnastics The girl’s gymnastics team made this season their second year in winning the Bay State League Championship with a record of 8-0. The team was captained by senior Linda Nelligan and junior Marcia Graham. Other outstanding seniors included Judy Henry and Debbie King. The Leon F. Harris Trophy for best sen- ior all-around gymnast was awarded to Linda Nelligan. 151 Cheerleaders Action! Enthusiasm! Teamwork! . . . describe this year’s Varsity Cheerlead- ers capably led by co-captains Debbie Merrill and Diane Halloran. The suc- cesses were many, but the highlight of the year was Homecoming during which many hours of work paid off in a super parade, a great game, and a memorable dance. 152 Drill Team This year was one of the finest for our great marching unit. Performing in all our football games, they provided fine half-time entertainment. The team was led by senior co-captains Susan Brown and Debby Routt and junior co-captains Elsie Baker and Paula Kirkland. 153 Band and Majorettes i I I Neither rain nor snow, sleet nor hail can stop the U.S. Mail as all America knows. But these four natural phenomana could not stop the B.H.S. Band during the 72-73 school year. Dressed in the symbolic blue blazers, white turtle necks, white flares, and white bucks the band marched the entire year in full gear. As the band worked hard to make music at its best, conse- quently, so did the majorettes. Under the leadership of Leslie Davis and Cindy Curren, the twirling majorettes added that extra enjoyment to such activities as the football games, public func- tions, and concerts with the band. Hard work and determination created several excellent routines, in which the girls proved their enthusiasm. ■I 154 155 CuVB ► V ' A-l ' ylte JUDy with + TWC.K CRBU V Student Council Officers 158 School Committee Reps. 159 . 4 . 160 161 Ecology Club D.E.C.A. Karin, Margret, and Michael participated as students at the high school for the school year of 1972-73. Hopefully, the experience of coming and meeting new friends was a satisfying experience for all three. KARIN SVENSON MARGRET LOF MICHAEL LANKER 176 Pictures to Remember A Look at How B.H.S. Students Were, During Their Tender Years. 178 179 Once upon a time, in a hamlet called Braintree, there lived a unique group of people. They were called, affectionately, or not so affectionately, the Class of 1973.” They all attended, faithfully, or not so faithfully, a strange and marvelous institution, Braintree High School. 184 There they were ruled by a king, His Royal Highness Hjelm, who, in the last year of his reign, added four ministers to his administration. These five men carried the burden of attempting to bring justice and punishment to wrongdoers within the school. 185 I The school was shared with another group of people called, fondly or not so fondly, r ' teachers. ” These brave souls dedicated themselves to the goal of bringing knowledge and enlightenment to the class in the members’ four year stay. Members of the class were involved in many suborganizations . . . and sometimes participated in phenomena known as sports . ” Of sports, they had a varied and awesome array, usually accompanied by a screaming horde of class members known as the ' fans. ” 187 188 189 . . AND THEY ASKED ME WHAT I WAS GONNA DO WITH THE REST OF MY LIFE, AND I SAID I DIDN’T KNOW. BUT, THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT IT, AND I GUESS THAT I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT TO. ITS ALL UP TO ME. ” Mr FOR CIRCULATION
