Hapke, Secretary Library I 115 FOOF ALL 1971 1971 fall football made a respectable showing. Plagued by injury, the team showed energy and effort, ending the season with a 4-5 record. Outstanding players were Joe Pendergast, Joe Burkehead, Damian Rinaldi, and Steve Riley. Substitute Bob Thayer did an excellent job filling in for injured quarter- back Dennis McCleary. 119 COCCER I ( Once again Coach Carson steered his varsity soccer squad through an- other exciting and successful year. Despite the team’s youth and douhts concerning another successful outcome, the soccer team not only ranked first in its third Bay State League championship, hut even made it to the semi-finals to meet Concord-Carlisle, Lincoln-Sudhury, and finally New Bedford. The success of this season has been attributed to the leadership of the co-captains, Ron Clang and Steve Paylor, along with the outstanding individual efforts of the entire team, among them seniors John Lihertini, illy Thibodeau, Mike Walsh, Rich Burst, Mike Rone, Nick Ulli, Boh Burbank. Rich DiMartino, Eddie O ' Brien, and Mark Valle. 120 Tlie Girls’ Gymnastics Team was ecjually as successful as the hoys ' team. They were undefeated and were the Bay State Leagu ‘ Cham[)ions. The girls have justly earned their top notch {)osition from a great deal of dedication and hard work along with the outstanding coaching they have received from Miss Smith. Led hy Gaptain Leslie Benson who competed on the l)alance beam and in vaulting, the team included seniors .Joyce S(piarehrigs (on floor and l)eam), who also (]ualified for the state individual championship, Linda Sanmiguel (on uneven bars), Janet Sejuarehrigs (on floor), and Sue Partridge (on the uneven bars) who also ((ualified for the state individual chamj)ionship, one of the many highlights of the season was the tcatTi ' s scoritig of 82.07 points against Norwood, setting a new Bay State League record. Then the team went on to win the state team cham[)ionshi[). Gmc’ (sv umsnee ftOD UOacB If anything, it was certainly a memorable year for the varsity field hockey team. The chips may have been down but the girls’ traditionally lively spirit was never lost. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side. Almost every game was determined by one single goal in the last minute of play favor- ing the opposing team. The one exception was Framingham North over whom the squad was grandly victorious with an excit- ing score of 1 to 0. The varsity field hockey team, coached by Mrs. Redmond and led by co-captains Ginny Sleep and Linda Shaw, included seniors Leslie Benson, Betty Jane Boogusch, Janice Callahan, Kathi Demeo, Anne McClellan, Sue Par- tridge, Julie Pettengill, Joanne Perpetua, Janet Roche, Linda San Miguel, Patty Reardon, and Marjorie Sullivan. ■ini. 124 As expertfd, Braintree’s gymnastic team came out on top, clinching the Bay State League championship for the second year in a row as well as going for a second straight year with- out defeat. The seniors who represented the triUMPHant” team which scored over 100 points at every meet were co-cap- tains Steve Shepherd, and Jay O’Brien, with A1 Herrick, Mike 1 Roche, Mark Valle, Bob Burbank, John Himrnel, and George Lee. Among the outstanding performers in both the Bay State League and State Individual championships were A1 Herrick who placed first on the side horse in both competitions, John Himrnel who tied for first place on the parallel bars in the Bay State League, and co-captains Jay O’Brien and Steve Shep- herd who placed 7th and 8th respectively on the high bar in the Slate. To cap a f)erfecl year they went on to win the Mass. State Championship. BOVS’ svMNdsnce 125 I ' V V The overall lack of experience was a handicap during the first] half of the year, but as the season progressed, continued improve-j ment resulted in a 6-4-1 record. The most memorable match was. j with Dedham, where the Braintree team came from behind to win. ' .fi Outstanding were Chris Pacelli, Steve Weinacht, Kevin Kearney, Jack Kilraine, and Damian Rinaldi. 126 i 127 Hard work and determination were characteristic of the indoor track team, coached by Mr. Aldrich and managed by Doug Parsons. The team held a final record of 3-6. Outstanding performances were put in by Bob Lysakowski in the high jump, Russ Blake in the two mile, co-captains Steve Paylor and Steve Berardinello in the mile and 45 yard high hurdles respectively, and Kevin Kinnon in the mile. Junior Louis Frisina showed well in the shotput. Sophomores Craig Jordan, Ronnie Pompeo, and Neil Roberts showed much promise for next year. And senior Gene Baker broke the school’s 2- mile record. 129 crjoqc cwm Captained by Russ Blake and Gene Baker, the team finished the season with a 5-4 record. They placed 6th in the Class A meet. They finished with an 11-7 record with Ricky Tona, the high scorer. The boys missed the Tech this year when they were downed by one point in the last game with Milton — but there’s always next year! 133 I 13S GfRlS’ The girls’ varsity leaskethall team finished fifth place in the Bay State Le ague with a record of five wins and four losses. Losing four close games at the beginning of the season, they steadily improved, finishing 6-4 and averaging 40 points per game to their opponent’s 29. Pat Leminen and Linda Shaw le‘d in the scoring department. Junior varsity [)laced third in the Bay State League with a 7-2 rec- ord. 137 wocm ' With a record of 11-3-4, the hockey team came into its own this year. Aided by center Steve Woods, right wing Dennis McCleary, and defenseman Bob Sunderland, the team had an exciting season in its 0-0 tie with Needham, its two qualifiers with Brookline and Winthrop, and finally the quarter finals with Matignon. 138 139 mL SPORTS AW ARDS ASSE UBLY BUSTER” DOUCETTE TROPHY: Joe Pendergast DICK McANDREW TROPHY: Joe Burkehead, Damian Rinaldi I THOMAS McDonald award: Steve Paylor I ! The peppy varsity cheerleaders, led this year by co-cap- tains Lee Reinhalter and Marylou McDonough, provided inspiration for Braintree High’s football, basketball, and hockey teams. I.ed under the (•a})ahle direction of Mr. Ruhino, the hand ' s year began hy learning how to mark each down-heat with the left foot, while (jlaying new music around a wind-sw ' l t track. Then with the aid of a pair of muddied old shoes and much hard work, the halftime football shows represented the culmination of a few weeks ' prej)aration. U[)on the termination of the foot- ball season, the work began on an active concert season which included a Christ- mas and a Spring f’ops Concert, an exchange concert with Waterville, Maine, and p( ' rformances at various schools and public functions. During these times, the 1 )and dis[)layed its musical diversity not oidy through the variety of musical literature ()erfornied. hut also through the Dance Band and the Woodwind and Brass Knsettd)les. Meeting with the band daily, a group of girls made their pres- ence known through dazzling routines of twirling skill. Better known as the majorettes, they were led by Gail Bagnulo and Janet Breslin to create routines that not only showed precision, but also formation and rhythm. Under the guidance of twirling champion Barbara Paine, the majorettes learned and perfected many routines for concerts, parades, and various competitions. 144 145 SEfJfOR OASS OFFfCERe President — Richard DiMartino Vice-President — Nancy Corrigan Treasurer — Cindy Foster Secretary — Kathy Eno STUDENT COUNai. That meeting the higher” aspects of French culture were discussed! The F ' rench Cluh, or more elegantly, Le Cercle Francais, also encouraged interests in French culture and cuisine. Con- tinually thinking of nourishment, the French Club held a bake sale and a luncheon excursion to a French restaurant.
