fggSSf WAMPATUCK 1971 Editors John Burgess Steven McMicken Stephen Pierce Braintree High School Braintree Massachusetts Dedication If Braintree High were to choose candidates for a “most capable” award, Mrs. Campbell would be highest on the list. For the past forty-one years she has weathered all the crises of the school while serving under three principals. Certainly our present principal, Mr. Hjelm, would be the last to deny her competence, for where could he find a more able secre- tary or a more willing right hand? In addition to being efficient, Mrs. Campbell is consid- erate, understanding, and worthy of the trust and admiration that students and faculty alike have given her. The memories she leaves us will always be cherished. Dedication Ideally, a teacher is a giver. She enriches her students through her knowledge, skill and personal experiences; she gives of herself. This is an apt description of Mrs. Bernardine Gutterson, English and Latin teacher and long time faculty advisor of the Junior Classical League. During thirty-nine years in Braintree until her retirement in June of 1970, Mrs. Gutterson was known to everyone for her countless virtues. She is truly a dedicated teacher and inspires in her students an appreciation for knowledge and the desire for excellence. Her hard work and helpfulness to all will make the absence of this fine educator from Braintree High School greatly felt. Junior Prom May 8, 1970 Prelude to our Senior year Oh my God — prune juice? Summer Scene The Great Escape! ! ! I love you, Yvette. Where’s my rubber ducky? I think we’re alone now. Who’s dramatic? Hi Mom, we were just ... ah listening to records? Summertime — We freed our souls , . . We rested our minds . . . We bronzed our bodies . . We laughed and enjoyed, and then . . . Autumn arrived — Some things never change. RETURN Intellectual pursuits? September 9, 1970 Mr. Oakman’s period 9 class. Carson’s casualty. 2:16 P.M. Lunch Patrol Where’s the wastebasket? Alright, who took my other milk? A cafeteria special. Sorry, false alarm. The busiest place in school. Peace, Brother David. This will have been your last year in public school and, for most, it culminates thirteen years in all. During that time, your teachers have presented you with many facts in many subjects. They have given you the opportunity to explore new ideas and to learn to think and to express yourselves. We trust their instruction has been valuable to you, that in their guidance they have led rather than commanded. Their effort has been in your behalf to help you grow into sensible, thinking people. Only in the lives you live will you or we learn whether their skills have been constructively productive. Frank J, Guiliano Jr ( Assistant Superintendent ) William F. Young Walter K. In addition to organizing and operating the Student Lounge, the council members are running a before- school coffee and doughnuts program. Proceeds from these ai d many otKer fund-raising activities have gone to CARE and a needy local family. They gave a tea for this year’s foreign exchange student, Cesar Lopez, spon- sored two dances, and will present the yearly Navy Band assembly. Student Council members’ efforts at better communication is evidenced not only in their whole-hearted sup- port of school and community functions, but most recently in a proposed Student Bill of Rights, a state-wide project establishing guidelines on student rights and responsibilities. Senior Class Officers School Committee Representatives Something new has been added. Jim McDonough, Bill Nelligan, and John Shaughnessy are Braintree High School’s representatives to School Committee meetings. They bring a “student’s eye view” to the educational con- cerns that involve us all. Photography Club Vistec VISTEC is a volunteer organization dedicated to the help- ing of the special children at St. Coletta’s in Braintree and the Paul A. Dever School in Taunton. Its president, Bob Palumbo, has done a great deal to promote fund raising activities which aid the children. Members work with the children and take them on field trips. The experience is a rewarding one for both the children and the volunteers. The problems of smoking and drug abuse are promi- nent in today’s society. Our socio-biology director, Mr. Lague, bas initiated tbe Mod Squad program in tbe hope of informing the Braintree elementary school stu- dents of the harmful effects of smoking and drugs. The Mod Squad includes junior and senior members, two boys and two girls to a squad, wbo are outgoing, personable young people who are able to get along with, and win the trust of, elementary school children. All members of the Mod Squad are enrolled in a psychology program conducted by Mr. Lague. This program gives the squad a basic understanding of younger students. The success of the Mod Squad has drawn interest from many school officials throughout the country. Audio-Visual Aids Tracking down phonographs, delivering pro- jectors, taking film orders, and hunting for order forms are but a few of the frustrations daily en- countered by the A-V Aides. Newspaper The Newspaper Staff triumphs over the hardships of scrounging for photographs, doubling up ori assignments, agonizing through layout plan- ning, and encountering the considerably underwhelming response to sales promotion. Future Teachers Interesting guest speakers highlight the year for these students with an eye to the future. Given the ever-chang- ing aspects of education, these Future Teachers are ac- quainting themselves early with the problems and the rewards of a dynamic profession. The purpose of this club is to give girls who are interested in a secretarial career a little knowledge and a better understanding of this field. Holding meetings the first Thursday of every month, the girls listen to guest speakers, engage in fund-raising projects, and offer a scholarship to help further the education of the club’s worthiest girl. But the group’s activities are not strictly business. They are planning a week in New York for pleasure and sightseeing. Future Nurses Helping out in the Health Office, running cake sales, and working often as volunteers, these girls gain some insights into the rigors and rewards of the nursing pro- fesssion. Future Secretaries Math Club Distributive Education Club of America Braintree is a member of the Greater Boston Mathe- matics League, South Division. We compete with other South Shore high schools. Competing this year have been Exchequer of the Exponents Glennon, Regent of the Radicals Casey, Protector of the Powers Corrigan, Pres- ident of the Primes Whittaker, Dictator of Derivatives Norton, and Principal of Substitution Griffin. Junior Tetrarch of Trigonometry Bookman is high scorer. Hon- ors include fourth place in the overall standing and a perfect round, 18 out of 18 points. Dramatics Club Under the direction of Miss McKay, the Dramatics Club offers experience in every aspect of the theater — including set design- ing, lighting, make-up, costuming, publicity, not to mention acting. r Ai i ‘ L jirT— i The Lottery ‘Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon. Goes International Lily Eckes — German Exchange Student 1970 . Even now back again in Germany my thoughts are wandering to B.H.S. It was quite an experience to attend an American school, having the opportunity to form my own opinion, seeing things with my own eyes . . . Well, and now there comes a chapter which is not so easy to be described. I was so deeply impressed by the generosity, the way I was accepted as well by my teachers as by all the kids whom I met. The extraordinary widespread friendliness was just great. I never felt like ‘a fifth wheel on a wagon,’ as we used to say in German, but from the beginning on I belonged to the group . . . and the longer I am away from you all the more I see you with a glory of remembrance.” Senior Richard Paolucci spent summer 1970 in Canada de Gomez, Argentina, as an International Fel- lowship Exchange Student. He lived with the Gardenals, a middle class family, and attended the local public school where the average student must take fourteen subjects per week. Six Months in Braintree Summer ’70 in Argentina Richard Paolucci and his family are playing host family this year to Cesar Lopez, as part of the Student Council sponsored International Fellowship Program. Cesar, from Leon Nicara- gua, is spending six months in this country, studying at Braintree High School. Football 1970 A season to remember for Captain Mike Irwin and senior squad members — Adolph Bellizeare, Arthur Capaccioli, Brian Donovan, Mike Higgins, Dennis Hoffman, Robert Jones, Milton McLaurin, Jim Mullen, Denis O’Brien, Bob Palumbo, James Sauer, Alan Sbaw, Edward Shedlock, Brian Sullivan, Mark Sul- livan, and Stephen Wright. Returning from a disappointing year in 1969, the B.H.S. football team vaulted to the Bay State League title with an undefeated and untied season (9-0-0). Led by senior captain Mike Irwin and star halfback Adolph Bellizeare, the Wamps proved to be too powerful for the Bay State League competition. Coach Ed Beck en- joyed his finest season as B.H.S. coach, taking Braintree to the Class B State Co-Championship. Bay State League Championship I 143 Soccer j Under the direction of Coach Carson, the Braintree High i school Soccer Team became the first team in the history of he Bay State League to win the League two years in a row. With a season’s record of 14-1-1, the team beat Winchester the quarter finals, Newton in the semi-finals, losing to New ledford in the finals. Steve Paylor led the team in scoring, Mark Barry was sec- ind; Dexter Legg was the superior goalie. All Stars included Captain Mark Barry, Dexter Legg, Wally shea, and Nick Ulli. 147 Indoor Track New in the Bay State League this year, Braintree’s indoor track team, with tri- captains Paul McDonough, Paul Inferrera, and Adolph Bellizeare, gave strong com- petition to all teams. With a hopeful record of 6-2, this team worked with little glory and recognition to boost Braintree’s chances for the All Sports Trophy. Cross Country Improving over last sea- son, the cross country team, captained by seniors Larry Thode and Mike Macaluso, scored a record 7-2 and tied ' for second place in the Bay State League. Paul Mc- Donough was the team’s top runner. 150 153 This was a year of change for the Braintree High School basketball team with the turnover of coaches and the establish- ment of new systems. The general improvement as the season progressed showed that loyalty and team effort were strong as ever. Many of the games were lost by two or three points, with an overall average of 5.5 win-loss differential. v ' n tv 162 Ice hockey showed fantastic effort this year with an even win-loss record. With the drive and energy of tri-captains Steve Woods, Dennis Mc- Leary, and Sco tt Smith, Braintree’s general im- provement throughout the season has proven they are a tough team to beat. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Schuh- werk, Braintree’s gym- nastics team had an excellent season. The Wamp gymnasts won the Bay State League Championship and fin- ished the regular sea- son with a record of nine wins and no defeats. The Wamps’ hard work and dedica- tion enabled them to become the highest scoring team in the state this year. mw Gymnastics The girls’ basketball team completed an outstanding season this year with an 8-3 record in the Bay State League. They went on to the Girls’ Southern Massachusetts Invitational Tournament where they defeated Sharon High School in the preliminary round but were defeated by Hanover High in the semi-finals. This is the farthest the team has gone since 1964. The team, was captained by Paula Daley and Carol Swindler, with high scorers Carol Swindler, Pat Leminen, and Janet Whitman.
