Carmen P. Rinaldi, (Assistant Superintendent ) William F. Young (Superintendent) We are living in a time of dissent, militancy and confrontation. Society is searching for a new and relevant ideology. We as adults are guilty of preaching values which you, our children, blatantly call phony. Our generation seeks to hold on,” and you, our young, rebel and prod impatiently. Our deliberations and moderation may offend you, but remember that, as the change agents of today, you will become to- morrow’s keepers of traditions. In your turn, you will be prodded by the new wave of young people. We urge you to spend freely and fully of your- selves. Accept responsibility! Elevate the human con- dition! Yours is the time to dream and the time to fulfill! William F. Young Carmen P. Rinaldi 18 Have faith in your parents for they love you and wish you well. Have faith in God for there will be times when man, in all his collective wisdom, cannot provide for you an answer. Have faith in yourself for that is where you, and only you, live. Have faith that hard work, honest motives, clean living and purpose will enhance your future happiness. Have faith in the ultimate brotherhood of man for, being gregarious in nature, we must learn to live in harmony. Have faith in these faiths and many doubts will be dispelled and much unhappiness avoided. OOaXi 1 . Walter K. Hjelm (Principal) 19 Edward R. For the first time, in more years than any- one could remember, the Christmas assembly featured a dramatic presentation, Amal and the Midnight Visitors,” which brought together, by the way, talent from the high school, junior highs, and Boston University. The Glee Club, Chorus and Choir sang the accompaniment. In addition to this, the club worked out many other productions, notably the February perform- ance of the Fantastiks. 96 Chct{6Sbia Though overcrowded conditions this year forced programing unfavorable to such clubs, all can here attest to the admirable achievements of director George Raymond and the band members who spent many days after school and those Saturdays during the football season to provide BHS with a half-time show. Our orchestra continued to provide the music for Music-Theatre productions and special as- semblies. Jd 98 They continue to keep our spirits up (and to get into the games free). Braintree’s answer to the Dallas Rangerettes. Dtotnuftfecs Arsenic and Old Lace was the big one this year. And typically, advisor-director-costume designer-stage designer-lighting director-jack of all trades Bob Corey gave Braintree another success. Many of our actresses and actors have Bob for English and we hear that this year the classes performed in-the-rough” everything from Sophocles’ Antigone to lonescoe’s The Chairs. This year’s group is undoubtedly an active one, adding to its repertoire two spring productions: Edward Albee’s Zoo Story and The American Dream. Operatin the office switchboard, typing materials for teachers, running important (and irrelevant) messages for everyone, staying after school to catch up with Miss Evans’ assignments — all these, without one thought of Helen Gurley Brown, give them a vital role at B.H.S. It is a healthy sign to see both teachers and students using the librar} ' almost every hour of the school day. These DECA officers are just a few of Braintree’s finest trainees in retailing and sales-management. Under the guidance and supen ision of Mrs. Constance Doty, that teacher with the striking hats, these young people have managed to collect many of the competitive retailing awards in this area. I 1 I 107 1969’s Student Council continued the fight against student apathy toward self-government by opening all its meetings to those who wished to attend, though participation was, of course, limited to the members. Projects for CARE and VISTA as well as the Christmas Toys for Tots drive were just a few ' of the community programs this group organized — and, of course, there were the socials, the highlight of which was the Winter Carnival (coming one week before the snow storm). 108 Hey, isn’t that you on page 108 right behind Mike.’’ Yeth, it isth.’’ i09 Our Niitioncil Honor Society members dedicate themselves to something beyond maintaining their own marks. Though our team never did play at full strength, they did manage to post a winning record — 5 wins, 4 losses. Lest we forget one record let it be noted: this team had four co-captains — John O’Hare, Joe Belmosto, Mark Wal- lace, Bill Bennett. Shall we try for five boys? 1 16 A ClUkL quMteAhCbCk fnovid Cu stttc[ Ut 1 I 19 A 12-2 winning record and a scoring feat of 21 goals in one season by Joe Regele marked the continued supremac) ' of B.H.S. 1 120 A study 0 socce t bathb 121 122 Our Cross Country team ran its unbroken winning streak to 40 games before losing to a determined Natick team. However, a 7-2 season and a second place tmimph for Dave Elliott in the New England Tourney still gives Braintree one of the best teams in the Bay State League. 1 1 t i i 123 1 124 ■ Mr. Herget, did it again — this year’s team, captained by Dave Elliott and John Haviland, took first place in the Bay State League with a record of 16-2. Hey, you on de end, get dose feet together. 132 Captains Paul O’Sullivan and Artie Adams provided this year’s relatively inexperienced gymnastics team with the leadership that they needed. Posting a 5-4 winning record, they look forward to an even better season next year. I This year ' s inexperienced team, led by Dolores Powers (the only senior on the squad), ended at par, with promise for the years ahead. 134 135 •mmSm WM Kwl mMWK Mmi ' MfSmM. If there is one icle.i the yearbook staff has tried to illustrate in the Wanipatuck, it is the spirit of involvement, people meeting people. And in this respect Braintree had the unique opportunity of having Mr. Kozo Yoneya, a high school English teacher from northern Japan, visit and observe our schools for some eight weeks, cultivating a mutual respect for and understanding of East and West. The moment of glory came Saturday t Boston Garden as Braintree High School ralhed with an about-face second half effect to nip highly-touted Hyde Park, 63-59, for the C ass championship of the Eastern Mass. Act- ing quickly, BHS students filled hun- dreds of sandbags which officials dis- tributed throughout the Weymouth- Braintree area. Students sold Rotary Show tickets . . . seniors washed cars . . . but at best all memorial fund efforts expressed only a token of the esteem they held for the late Billy Cannon. A fine all-round student and athlete, Billy- served as an inspiration not only to the class of ' 68 but to the entire student body, which will long remember his struggles to forge an effec- tive student government. I Staffers autograph BHS yearbook for one of many thrill-seeking Columbia journalism majors. Sister Judy” I This year ' s Exchange Concert brought to us the Springfield Glee Club and the Har- wich Band. VCT believe this annual affair should continue and we hope that Brain- tree’s new high school will provide oppor- tunities for greater musical participation for its students than the current facilities encourage. Music is the sound of the young and the hopeful. Baseball . the national pastime ( ?) 1 The only t ame where love” is a real loser The class of ’69 may well be best remembered for having been the first one at BHS to produce a motion picture. The quality’ of the 30 minute film took us by surprise, especially the totally realistic performance of Jim Concannon who w ' as w ' ell sup- ported by Christine Houmiller, Holly Milch, Philip Munroe, Alan Govoni, and Mrs. Constance Doty. Although Runaway” came late in the year, this sleeper” was so well received that w ' e voted the balance of our treasury ' lor the purchase of movie equipment for our school. Edward Albee ' s Zoo Story and The American Dream pro- vided us with a taste of the absurd, ir ' e done. Braintree needs more experimental theatre.
