VOCATIONAL
AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTOR
THE BRADFORD HORSE SHOW, 1938
An organization which owes most of its
success to F. G-. Clark, who has been an
active President for several years.
4
In dedicating this annual to Mr. Clark
the student council feel that they are dedi-
cating it to the most popular member of
the high school faculty. Mr. Clark has
taught Vocational Agriculture in the Brad-
ford High School for ten years and has al-
ways been very popular with the students
and faculty. His genial smile and amiable
nature attract the bashful freshmen for
friendly adviceg his quiet manner and
sound judgment command respect of
the upper classmang his cheerful manner
and good nature make him popular among
the faculty membersg and his willingness
to assist anyone in the community or to
devote his time to community projects
mark him as a civic leader.
Mr. Clark and the Bradford Horse
Show are synonymous terms. He has serv-
ed as its president since its beginning in
1934 and has been instrumental in its de-
velopment. Although the weather man has
been rather stingy with good weather Mr.
Clark did not allow this to interfere with
the program. Everyone who attends the
show is well satisfied with it's management
and each year the show increases in size.
Aside from this Mr. Clark is popular in
other community a-ctivities being Worship-
ful Master of the Masonic Lodge, and past
president of the Community Club. So it is
with great pleasure that the Student Coun-
cil dedicate this year's Bradonian to the
good fellow and teacher, Mr. Francis Clark.
Student Council

Dunbar, Secretary: Mr. Edmundson.

The organization at Bradford High School
which has charge of all extra curricular
activities is the Student Council. Every
year many new ideas are introduced by
this organization to make Bradford High
School a more interesting place to attend.
A few of the functions that the Student
Council sponsor are the Annual Homecom-
ing, Carnival and Big Brother and Sister
day. The Carnival proved to be a. tremen-
dous success this year, many new booths
were introduced and a very good free per-
formance was given. The Student Council
solicited the local business men for prizes
for a carnival drawing and the business
men contributed very generously giving
sixty-five prizes in all. These prizes ranged
all the way from 31.50 in cash to a chicken.
Ticket were made and chances sold on
this drawing and it proved to be 9, money
making scheme. Different members of the
Student Council also supervised a, car par-
ade before the Homecoming game and many
prizes were given for the best floats. Be-
tween the halt a bicycle parade was staged
and many students participated. The main
feature of the evening was the election of
the Carnival Oueen and the King. It proved
to be one of the most hotly contested elect-
ions ever held and Norma Ames Seniors
finally won. Big Brother and Sister day is
always heralded by the Student Council
members for they are allowed to use the
teachers cars and visit all the country
schools and personally invite the eighth
grade students to attend school for a day.
About eighty-five students attended last
year and all acted as if they h'ad received
a good sampling of high school life.
This year the Student Council joined the
State Student Council Association and at-
tended the district meeting held at Delavan.
Here the different members took part in
panel discussions such as School Spirit and
Morale, Honor Study Halls, Pep meetings.
and School Spirit. They also heard talks
on successful projects other Student Coun-
cils had sponsored. Tom Landes gave a
three minute talk on Big Brother and Sis-
ter day. At night all the members and Mr.
Edmundson attended a banquet and heard
a very interesting speaker.
On March 31 and April 1 the Student
Council also attended the State convention
held at Peoria. Schools from all over the
state were represented at this meeting and
Bradford was proud to be one of them.
This meeting was similiar to the one held
at Delavan.
Tom Landes, Student Council President,
and Lynn Velde, a member, were chosen
by the Bradford Community Club and Amer-
ican Legion Post to attend the Premier
Boy's State at Springfield.

Again this year the Junior class has been
a jolly group. Many of its members were
represented in athletic events, plays and
various social activities.
In our organization meeting under the
sponsorship 'of Miss Grantham and Mr. Gar-
rison the following officers were elected:
Clifford Miller, President.
Lorraine Wilt, Vice President.
Rosemary Breen, Secretary-Treasurer
Wilma Sellers, John Howes, Student
Council.
In the Homecoming Parade on November
11, we Juniors were very happy because
we won first prize of 87.50 on our float.
"The Last of the Mohicansl' That night, our
qneen candidate, Lorraine Wilt, gave the
winner a pretty close race and placed
second. The Junior girls sponsored the
Dance Hall and the boys made their share
of the money on the "Ball and Chain" and
"Nail Driving" booths. A

Up,,' John Howes and Gerald Holland did
their part for the class. "The Lucky Star"
cast found Les Welsh and Rosemary Breen

An all-school Valentine party was spon-
sored by the Juniors at which the games,
entertainment and refreshments were in
keeping with Dan Cupid's day of days.
In the contest work in the Spring Dorothy
Garrison was chosen as alto soloist and
Rosemary Breen as piano soloist. Isobel
Burwell spoke humorous at the Blackhawk
conference and Rosemary spoke dramatic-
In the commercial contests the following

The Juniors worked hard all year selling
candy, sponsoring cake walks, plays and
many other activities in order to make
money to give a formal banquet for the
Seniors. The girls looked forward to this
big event because they donned formals for
the first time, wore gay corsages, and were
escorted bv their best boy friends. The
banquet was served by the Pa.rent-Teach-
ers' Association and entertainment and
dancing followed.

This year's sophomores proved that the
old saying, "You can tell a sophomore, but
vou can't tell him much," does not always
hold true. This year we are very proud of
our splendid showing on the honor roll.
At the beginning of the first semester,
the following officers were elected:
Cleo Kopp, presidentg Helen Phelps, vice
presidentg Bob Seeds, secretary-treasurerg
Cecile Ames, Ernest Linden, Student Coun-
cil.
The sophomore class did its part in help-
ing to make the Carnival another big suc
cess. Carol Velde and Ernest Linden were
the candidates for Queen and King.
The All-School Christmas party was
sponsored by our class. The first part of
the evening was spent in playing games
and dancing. The highlight of the party
was the arrival of none other than Santa
to tell us of his "Second Marriage." Be-
lieve it or not, he also read us some letters
that he had received from various students
and teachers, telling him what they want-
ed for Christmas. Last but not least, came
the distribution of the gifts, candies and
fruits. Even high school students think
Christmas is incomplete without a Santa
Claus.
The sophomore boys made a fine show-
ing in athletics this year. The reserve bas-
ketball team was made up almost entire-
ly of our sophomore boys. This included
the following: Dan McKean, Jack Hannon,
Dick Herder, Bob Perkins, and Billy Bar-
ton. The former boys were on the football
team, and also, Tom Mowbray, Eddie Mow-
bray, Leland Wright, and Hyle Taylor. Al-
though we had no outstanding athletes this
year, we expect them to really "go to
town" in the next two years.
In fact this holds true for the entire
class. Keep your eye on this class for
scholarship, athletics and activities.

The class officers of the Freshman class
were elected at the first class meeting.
They were: President, Phil Harneyg Vice
President, Dick Heinzmanng Secretary-
Treasurer, James Mauping. The Student
Council members are Lucille Ryan and
Dick Owens. The Freshman class advisors
are Miss Bischoff and Mr. Wilcox. There
were twenty-eight members of our class at
the beginning of the year. Hazel and Jack
Purvis moved from Bradford at the end
of the first semester.
This year the freshmen have the privil-
ege of having a Freshman Glee Club. This
is the first year we have had the opportun-
ity of having a separate club. We meet
twice each week. We feel that we have
made good progress in our singing. Miss
Bischoff was our conductor
This year the freshman candidates for
the Carnival King and Queen were Lucille
Ryan and Dick Heinzmann. We had two
booths for our class. The girls had the Col-
umbus Game and the boys had "Spill the
Milk."
The freshman boys made a good show-
ing at the turn out for athletics. Ten boys
out of fourteen went out for football and
basketball. Dick Heinzmann, Phil Harney
and Bob Wright played with the second
team in football. Sometimes Jim Maupin
and Dick Owens got to help hold back the
opponents.
During the basketball season the fresh-
man team won most of their games. The
genuine interest of these boys helped con-
siderably to overcome the handicap of
their sm'all statures.
James Maupin was chosen for the cast
of "Lucky Star."
We also have a, Freshman Dramatic club
which meets once 3 week. We practice
dramatic and speech fundamentals and
work on some one-act plays. Miss Wass is
our instructor.
James Maupin and Lucille Ryan have
appeared on the honor roll throughout the
entire year.
At some of our class meetings we had
performances for the purpose of teaching
us manners. We used as 9, text-book "Man-
ners For Moderne." Committees were ap-
pointed to act out the correct way of set-
ting 'a table, introducing guests, eating at
formal banquets and every day acts of cour-
tes .
'lqhe enthusiasm and cooperation of this
class was shown when the class entertain-
ed the school with an Easter party the lat-
ter part of March.
Our Library

Bradford High's treasure house of wis-
dom ts one of the most popular rooms in
the building. Yes, it is popular for more
than one reason. Why shou.ldn't a library
with almost five thousand books with gay-
colored bindings be a pleasant place to
spend your leisure time? We like to linger
here not only for our interest in books but
also for seeking pleasure when no teacher
is persent. The student libarians are al-
ways near to help us find what we want
and see that our voices are gentle and low.
If y0u are a student of English, you will
not find it necessary to buy text books as
there are about thirty-five sets to be stu-
died in classrooms. If you are looking for
a book to read "just for fun," there are
several hundred on the shelves. If you wish
to delve into the past, you will find rows
and rows of history, science, and English
reference books. If you are interested in
household arts, your wants will be satis-
fied by the home economics library. If you
aspire to be a farmer, you can find out al-
most anything you wish to know from the
several hundred books .in the agriculture
room. If you have gone through these thou-
sands of books and have not found the de-
sired information, you may try the World
Book or any of the other four sets of en-
cyclopedias. If you are a poor speller or if
a new word 'stumps" you, there are many
dictionaries which you may consult.
The school also subscribes to some forty
magazines which come weekly, bi-weekly,
or monthly. For pleasure you may read
such as The Saturday Evening Post, Col-
liers. and Life. For those who like to keep
up with what is going on in the world,
there are the Readers' Digest, Time, or
Scholastic. For the latest fashions, con-
sult McCall's, Pictorial Review, and The
Ladies' Home Journal. If your mind runs
toward science, read Popular Mechanics
and Popular Science. Then, there are many
farm magazines for those who like the
country.
The life of a librarian is not as smooth
sailing as it may seem. Just try to keep
tab on several hundred books which are
in circulation all of the time and see what
a task it is. Reference books are checked
out for one night only and all others for a
period of two weeks. The penny-a-day fines
which are imposed on the careless and the
forgetful ones help to buy many supplies
which are needed.
We feel sure that no small school has
a better library than we have and it we
make use of all these books and magazines
is there any reason why we shouldn't be
well-informed?

ENGLISH AND SPEECH
ILLINOIS SPEECH LEAGUE
The Iliinois High School Speech League
is an organization conducting state-wide
inter-scholastic contests and festivals in
debating, dramatics, original oration, ex-
tempore speaking, verse reading, comedy
reaning, oratorical declamation, and ser-
ious reading. This League has been the
outgrowth of a desire on the part of high
school teachers of speech to improve the
speech program tor high schools in the
state of Illinois.
The representatives last year for the
sub district were as follows: Holton Ros-
enquist, humorous: Rosemary Breen, dra-
matic: Ruth Spencer, verse: Mark Turner,
Uratory
In the county contest at Toulon Rose
mary Breen placed first in dramatic and
Jane Owens second in humorous.
This Year the Blackhawk Conference
added a new department to its list. ln
March the extempore and oratory division
was held at Bradford and the humorous
and dramatic at Galva.

DRAMATIC CLUB
The Orange and Black Masquers Club
was changed this year. Membership was
acquired by trying-out, and the more dra-
matic type, those who were capable of car-
rying parts, were chosen. However the
Masquers of last year automatically be-
came members. This reduced the club
membership a great deal and made the
club stronger and more easily managed.
Miss Wass, our new English and Speech
instructor. proved an efficient and capable
advisor for the club, With the cooperation
of the members she was able to present
three exceptionally fine plays, all of which
were comedies. "Who Gets the Car To-
night" was the Carnival Play which is giv-
en each year in the assembly. The other
two plays were three acts, the first, "The
Clean-Up," the second, "Lucky Star."
Of course, the club had social activities
as well as other obligations to meet. The
"hamburger fry with onions" is something
which can not be easily forgotten.
The following officers were chosen:
President. Norma Ames.
Vice President, Bill Carroll.
Secretary, Jane Owens.

HIGHLIGHTS STAFF
Every Wednesday after school the post-
office is filled to capacity with B. H. S.
students waiting to get the "Republican",
so tney can read the "Highlights"
Indeed, history does follow repetition.
For the last four years, the paper staff has
constantly changed advisors. They think
that this is a very good idea as it furnish-
Bd new inspiration and ideas. Our advisor
this year, Miss Wass, really knows her
stuff" as she used to spend her spare time
working on a. college paper.
For several years members of the staff
have been attempting to select pins for
this organization, but to no avail. This
year, much to the surprise of everyone, a
pin was chosen, voted upon, and ordered.
Now these individuals proudly display their
"press" pins, and regard them as pins of
recognition.
In the fall the paper staff enjoyed a pot
luck supper with all the trimmings. Food
fills a cavity which literary works fail to
reach.
Weekly meetings of the staff are held
every Monday at which the pupils discuss
assignments, possibilities for improvement.
and write stories.
The staff owes thanks to Miss Wass, their
advisor, for her fine work and also to Mr.
Breen, who gives us an opportunity to pub-
lish our news each week in the Republican.

"TH E BFlADETTE"
"What! Something new?" you ask.
Yes, something definitely new. The idea
is an old one, but never before could we
tind anyone with the 'umph to undertake
such a grueling task, but '38 brought
Miss Wass with the 'umpn and
ideas. Before long. a school magazine,
christened the "Bradette" by Marion Ioder
was put up to the public for approval.
Before this time the thrill of selecting
material, setting up copy, cutting stencils,
operating the mimeograph, stapling, and
distributing a magazine was unknown to
us.
We are always open for suggestions and
say to you:
If you have a bit of news,
Hand it ing
Or a joke that will amuse
Hand it in,
Never mind about the style
If the news is worth the while,
It may help or cause a smile,
Hand it in.
With a dash of humor from Boyd, a
touch of seriousness from Owens, and
slight criticisms from Miss Wass and plen-
ty of snappy stories from the reD01'tG1'S-
the "Bradette" is a first attempt, and a
very good one, towards a school magazine.
We won't be so narrow minded as to say
that there's no room for improvement, but
if Omega is as successful as Alpha, we
rate you four stars, Bradette!

Adding to their already excellent musician
ship, the members of the Bradford 1-ligh
School Band received very good looking
uniforms. These suits have sweaters that
are orange, b,ack trousers, and black caps
oi the overseas type trimmed in orange.
These new uniforms add very much to the
appearance of the band, increasing their
chances of getting much farther in the
contest this year.
The new conductor, Mr. Brown, of Peor-
ia, has made great strides in the progress
ot the band. With the addition of new in-
struments, the tonal quality of the band
is greatly improved,
A joint concert was given in conjunction
with the Tiskilwa. band and it was receiv-
ed with great enthusiasm. The concert was
given on a Sunday afternoon and was large-
ly attended.
It is very difficult for a band so small as
the Bradford band to get very far in a con-
test, for there are other bands who have
a. larger instrumentation, and errors in
playing aren't noticed as much. Owing to
this difficulty, Mr. Brown has given a lot
of time to the rehearsal of the band, and
to the individual sections, adding to the
virtousity of the musicians.
The spirit of the parents and the town
in general is very good. This is something
that some bands do not have and the add-
ed backing from all who boosted the band
is greatly appreciated.

MEDALS WON BY BOB BOYD
During the year, different members of
the band went to band clinics and other
musicahevents. These had the effect of
bmadelllllg the scope of the players who
went to them, and made them better play-
ers because of it.
Theer are 34 members in the band. Most
of these players graduated, making it hard
to have a band "par excellent" next year,
but Mr. Brown's excellent musicianship to-
gether with his hard-working quality and
his ability to get along with the students
will make up for any definiciency in the
number of players in the band, and they
will forge ahead to even greater heights
next year.
If the axiom "Musicians are born and
not made" is true the goddess of music
must have waved her wand vigorously at
the christening of one Master Robert Boyd
of the Bradford High School. For. as mus-
ical talent goes, it just bubbles over in him
and finds expression in the miramba and
trombone. But native ability left in a bar-
ren environment does not thrive very well
so Bob has his parents to thank for pro-
viding him with the best of instruction to
enable him to reach his peak of perfection.
BOB BOYD
With his Trombone..
Beginning in the third grade Bob strug-
gled with a trombone. This instrument was
so large that sometime you couldn'1g see
the player for the instrument. But he kept
practicing faithfully and at the age of
eleven began taking private instruction
and thoroughly mastered the fundamental
techique of the instrument. At the age of
thirteen he became interested in the Mir-
amba. It seems that he had been saving
some money to purchase a bicycle, but he
and his father arrived at the prosposition
if he would purchase a Miramba, he want-
ed so much, that his father would finance
the instruction. So the bicycle was sacri-
ficed for the miramba. So proficient did
he become on these two instruments that
he won the district and state contests when
he was in the seventh and eighth grades.
When he reached high school he was plac-
ed in the first division in the district con-
tests, state contests, and national contests
for four consecutive years. This achieve-
ment has not been equaled by any other

contestant in the history of the state and
national contests.
In addition to this recognition as a mus-
ician he is a member of the Peoria Sym-
phony Orchestrag has been a member of
the all state orchestra for four years and
in his senior vear was chosen as the first
trombonist, and has been the outstanding
member of the high school band for four
years.
Bob is just not a musical wizard. He is
a good student in the class room and is
especialy interested in some phase of en-
gineering, possibly electrical. He was a
member of the football and track teams
during his junior and senior year in high
school. So in conclusion We might say that
Bob is a living example aS to what a stu-
dent may profit by a. high school education.
And that Bradford High School may be
glad to have among its alumni such a me-m-
ber as Bob.

DRUM MAJOR
The drum major is the first member ot
the band seen in parades. It is essential
for this person to have grace, poise 'and
vivacity. Each year at the fall band festiv-
al at Peoria the drum majors of the various
bands entered compete for prize. This year
the honor was won by the drum major
from Avon.
BRASS QUARTET
Quartet numbers add variety to a band
program. The Bradford Band presented
the brass quartet on several occasions in
which they were well received. It is hoped
in the future the band instructor will be
able to increase the number of groups to
compete in the contest.

The officers selected at the first meeting
were:
President, Jane Owens: Secretary, Gloria
Welsh: Monitor, Lois Ward.
Besides learning to appreciate the best
music, we practiced breathing drills in or-
der to acquire the breath control good sing-
ers need. We also spent the first part of our
rehearsals singing scales and arpeggios.
This year we concentrated on harmony,
vowels and breathing.
The chorus appeared at a joint Band and

Last year the chorus entered the Sub-
District contest at Geneseo. The girls wore
dresses of pastel shades of rose and blue.
This year the choruses combined and
entered the contest as a mixed chorus at
Canton, The girls wore dark dresses with
white collars and the boys wore dark suits
with white shirts.
The soloists last year were Gloria Welsh
and Lois Gubbins who competed at Gen-
eseo.
Gloria Welsh, high: Jane Owens, med-
ium: Dorothy Garrison, low, are our solo-
ists for this year.
Jane Owens, Fem Tumbleson and Dor-
othy Garrison formed a trio. They sang
"Mighty Lak a Rose" at the Jr. Sr. League
meeting in January. Shirley Horack joined
them to form a quartette. These groups
appeared at the Band and Vocal concert.
Under the capable supervision of Miss
Bischoff and with Rosemary Breen as ac-
companist, the girls all feel that the year
was very educational and enjoyable.

MIXED CHORUS
The Mixed Chorus is composed of the
combined Girls' and Boys' Chorus. There
are seventeen girls and eighteen boys which
forms a chorus of thirty-five members. We
find that with our united voices we can
sing the more famous compositions with
the volume and interpretation they require.
Sunday afternoon, March 19, the Mixed
Chorus sang at the joint Band and Vocal
Concert held in the Bradford gymnasium.
The selections were our contest numbers.
The District contest this year was held
in Canton, Ill. The Mixed Chorus sang
"Listen To The Lambs" by Dett and "Home-
land" by Noble Cain. The chorus looked
very neat in black and white. The girls
wore black dresses with white colors and
the boys wore black suits with white
shirts.
The business of the Mixed Chorus was
handled separately in the individual chor-
uses. We had no extra dues. Each member
paid twenty cents a semester which en-
titled him to membership in both the in-
dividual and Mixed Chorus, Our first soc-
ial gathering was a harvest party held in
October.
Gloria Welsh and Bill Harney represent-
ed our chorus in the All-State Chorus at
Champaign in November.
Gertrude Swearingen was our able ac-
companist and Miss Bischoff our conductor.
THE OCTETTE
The octette originated this year under
the direction of Miss Bischoff. It is com-
posed of the girls' and boys' quartette. We
sang at community functions such as the

Bradford Township High School is most
fortunate in being one of the first in the
state to have a complete four year com-
posite course in home economics. A com-
posite course is a combination of various
units which will help students with their
present and future problems of living with
a special objective of fitting the work to
the needs of the students rather than fol-
lowing any special phase of home econom-
ics.
Miss Grantham, our instructor. is to he
thanked for this progressive condition in
the high school. She attended summer
school in order to be better prepared to
present these units to the high school stu-
dents. After a visit to our high school, the
state supervisor of home economics was so
well pleased with the course as taught in
the high school that she invited Miss
Grantham to serve on the state committee
that was working out a survey of that
course of study in the unit method of home
economics. We feel that the school should
be proud of having its faculty member
serve such an important committee.
The Board of Education recently pur-
chased two new electric stoves and a large
refrigerator. This equipment has been re-
commended by tbe state department of
home economics and will be a useful ad-
ition to the department. With the new cup-
boards purchased last year, the rearrange-
ment of the foods room, the abandonment of
the obsolete gas plates, and the addition
of the electrical equipment our foods de-
partment will be modern in every respect.

the Auditing Committee of the Illinois Vo-

group led by Miss Rua Van Horn, Federal
Agent for the Central Region from Wash-

group Friday morning.
After registering at the hotel on our ar-
rival, we student delegates went to the
new Woodruff High School. The most in-
teresting of the rooms, we thought, were
the seventeen which made up the Home
Economics Department.
In the afternoon we attended a Hobby

coln, which proved very interesting and
also helpful to ns. Everett Dirksen, State
Representative of the sixteenth district
spoke on "World Fellowship" at our ban-

Charlotte Dunbar discussed our 1937-38

This trip proved to be very helpful to

Under the leadership of Charlotte Dun-

successful year. Their motto was "Living
0ne's Best," and it was emphasized in all
of the club programs.
For the last three years the H. E. C.
and F. F. A. have had a joint initiation,
and as usual, it was a most enjoyable af-
fair this year. .
We always look forward to the carnival
and as in previous years our club was re-
sponsible for the "eats." This year our sign
which was "Stop and Stuff" drew a
large crowd.
The annual Christmas Tea held Dec. 7,
for all the girls in school and lady faculty
members was quite a success. The decor-
ations added much to the Christmas spirit.
These were silvered pine cones from Col-

ferent kinds of cookies added their bit to
the attractiveness of the tea table. Ardis
Talbert, .Tune Enos, Norma Ames, and
Charlotte Dunbar were hostesses of the
day.
This year George Washington's birthday
was celebrated by our "Martha's" for their
"George's" QF. F. AJ while our mothers
were entertained by a St. Patrick's Day
tea. This was also an outstanding event
and a good time was had by all.
For a number of years the Home Econ-
omics Club has been taking trips in the
spring. These trips are for enjoyment as
well as for the educational value they fur-
nish. Miss Grantham, our sponsor, has
helped to make these possible.
One day during the spring of 1937 two
truck loads of club girls chaperoned by
Miss Helen Edletson and Miss Grantham
went to Starved Rock. Many trails were
explored during the afternoon then the pic-
nic supper topped oft the days fun. The
1938 club trip was taken in the opposite
direction. Peoria was the destination. Here
the girl-s visited Roszell's Creamery, the
Midland Bakery Company, Troy Laundry
and had lunch in the Block 8: Kuhl Tea
Room. A movie completed the day's activ-
ities. Everyone enjoyed the trip immense-
ly. We hope that our educational trip ot
1939 will be equally interesting and worth-
while.
Commercial Dcparlmcnl.
The Commercial Department of Bradford
High School includes two years instruct-
ion in the "twin arts," typing and snort-
hand and one year of bookkeeping for Jun-
iors and Seniors. Junior business training
is also offered as an elective for Sopho-
mores.
During the first year of typing and
shorthand, the fundamentals are studied,
while of course, some stress is placed on
speed and accuracy. A student may also
enroll in typing I without shorthandg this
proves very beneficial, as every student
should have some experience in typewrit-
ing, and this enables them to acquire it.
The object of the second year follows
the old adage, "Experience is the best
teacher." During this time the aim is to
acquire speed, of course accurately.
In the subject of bookkeeping, the en-
tire procedure is taught in the form of a
practice set in which the various entries
for each business transaction are made by
the student. Junior business training also
deals with the mercantile world.
This section of Vocational Training not
only fits some students for work in this
field, but it is also a great factor in train-
inz the mind.
This year there were about forty-eight
commercial students. This is a large en-
rollment, and under the capable direction
of Mr. Anderson the benefits derived are
quite in accordance.

which is supervised by both national and
state laws. The ideas and interests of the
club are varied: viz: to develop and pro-
mote thrift, co-operation, citizenship and
leadership along agriculture lines. In ad-
dition to this practical knowledge the boys
engage in basketball, husking contest, judg-
ing. public speaking and parties.
Each club member in Agriculture keeps

Industrial Department.
Industrial Education has become one of
the most important departments of every
111056171 high School. No matter what trade
or nusiness a person is in, he is continually
coming in contact with a mechanical world.
The Bradford High School has an excellent
shop building. It is equipped with the best
tools, machines and instructional material
tor teaching high school students.
The Freshmen are taught fundamentals
tool process, and is introduced to the vast
world of reality. He learns something about
the different Industrial vocation of life and
whether or not he could be successful in
one. He learns how to pro.perly use the
common tools. Requirements in the differ-
ent vocatlnnal fields of work are studied.
A new course in metal work was intro-
duced this year. This course include sheet
metal, forging, and bench metal work. We
are living in an iron age,Every one should
know something about metal. The demand
for good metals workers exceeds the sup-
ply.
Three new lathes were purchased for the
shop this year. Other improvements were:
benches refinished, students locker in-
stalled, and interior woodwork refinished.
During the year a field trip was taken to
the R. G. La Tourneau Plant at Peoria.
Warren Reed, Jim Mitchell, Donald Scott
and Donald Towne, each made an exact re-
production of an early American Pricilla
sewing box. Bill Code and Wilbur Fate each
drew plans and constructed an electric
toaster. Some exceptional fine work in the
freshman class by Jim Maupin, Dick Heinz-
mann and Paul Hickey was also complet-
ed.

Our Carnival
Bradford's annual homecom-
ing and carnival was held on
the night of November 11. It
was attended by a very large
crowd and was a financial suc-
cess.
The annual bonfire and pe-p
meeting was held Thursday ev-
ening. Torches led the parade
which ended in the old park
where the bonfire was started.
was won by the Junior class
with a very clever float. The
game with Wyoming did not
prove so close but the Bradford
team thoroughly enjoyed them-
selves. The final score was 51 .

'iDou't crowd folks, there's room for all."
"Get your tickets here." 'The play's up-
stairs." 'Don't fail to vote for the queen."
These and many other things could be
heard as the evening wore on.
Games for the old as well as the young
were provided and everyone enjoyed them-
selves: free acts were also provided. Ten
forty-five! The bell rings! Who's the
Queen? A cheer went up from the most
sophisticated group in school and we knew
the Seniors' candidates, Norma Ames and
Virgil Bates had won. About this time the
crowd began to thin out and the carnival
was swiftly drawing to a close. The big
day was over, students and faculty mem-
bers, who had worked so hard with the
sponsors Miss Bischoff and Mr. Anderson
were tired but happy that the traditional
homecoming was another success.

The boys are not the only ones who can
get out and work up steam and energy!
The Girls' Athletic Association had some
girls who could do the same. This club was
organized last fall under the supervision
of Miss Wass.
From this club a basketball team was
chosen. On the nights that the boys had a
basketball game the girl's team practiced.
CHEER LEADERS
Under the supervision of Miss Bischoff.
the cheer leaders have put forth a good
effort in backing the football and basket-
ball geams. This year Ruth Nelson ,was
chosen from the sophomores to complete
the cheer leader team.
Pep-meetings conducted by the sponsor
and cheer leaders are an activity every one
enjoys. The freshmen have taken part in
many of the stunts that accompany the
meetings and when everyone leaves they
feel certain they have attended something
worthwhile.
A few weeks ago the cheer leaders real-
ly started to "strut their stuff" when the
new actions came out in place of the us-
ual thing. Also new yells are being put on
at different intervals and it anyone tells
you there is still one yell they still can't
quite get, you'll lmow it's that tongue twis-
ter "Ela-vevo."
These proved successful and it also gave
the girls a chance to s-how the boys they
have a group of coming Olympic stars 301113
da .
lyn the fall of the year the girls hiked out
to the woods by Spoon River and had a
Wiener roast. Wieners, buns, marshmallows
and potato chips all saw the bonfire and
were ravenously consumed by the girls.
The girls were very glad this club was
reorganized this year and here's success
to it next year.

COACH
The 1938 football season may well be
considered a success for the Bradford boys.
They won seven of their nine games, los-
ing one of the other two on a fluke. Two
of the boys received all-state recognition,
Bernard Murphy, hard hitting tackle and
Bill Code captain and quarterback.
Ten lettermen graduate this year, the
largest group for several years. This group
includes eight linesmen and two backs.
There are three ends: Dick Nelson, Kenny
Johnston and Henby Bayersg two tackles:
Bernard Murphy and Bob Boydg two
guards: Eddie Murphy and Dutch Landesg
a center: Herderg and Code and Velde,
backs.
Letterman returning for the '39 sefason
are Jiggs McKean, a halfback, Real, a back
in 38 and a center for 39, Spence Landes,
next years captain, and Welsh as guards.
and Miller, fullback in 38, will be in the
line at tackle.
The rest of the backfield will be filled
out with Dan McKean, John Hannon and
Dick Herder, all promising sophomores. The
line will probably be completed with Hol-
land at the other tackle, and Howes, Pet-
ers, and Phil Harney will divide time ut
the end posts.
This gives a fine prospect for the '39 sea
son, and a season as successful as in '33
should be expected.

The Bradford Panthers opened their sea-
son with three lettermen around which to
build a. team. A fourth letterman, Welsh,
lost an arm in the summer and was lost
to the team as a regular. The lettermen
returning were Real and co-captains Code
and Johnston. Along with these players
were Lynn Velde, John McKean, Tom Lan-
des. Spencer Landes and John Howes. The
team started strong. playing Kewanee a
25 to 18 game, defeating Wyoming and Dun-
lap, and then losing hard fought games to
Princeton 23 to 22 and Cambridge 23 to 22,
both conquerors of Kewanee. Sickness and
mumps then invaded the Panther lair and
McKean, Real and Howes were lost to the
squad for a considerable length of time in
the middle of the season disrupting the
practice and line-ups from which the team
could not seem to recover. 'Conference
games were then lost to Galva, Toulon and
Wethersfield. In the Toulon Tournament
Bradford lost to a powerful Wethersfield
team in the first round and a 15 to 17 de-
cision to Toulon in an overtime. The Brad-
ford "B" tetam was made up of sophomores.
They played a full schedule of games- and
one of their most noteworthy triumphs was
a win over the Kewanee Rlveters. Fourteen
boys reported for practice from the soph-
omore class and some of the most promis-
ing boys are Tom Mowbray, Ed Mowbray.
Leland Wright, Dick Herder, Bob Perkins,
Bill Barton, Robt, Seeds, Jack Hannon and
Dan McKean.
Of the seven regulars on the varsity
three will return next year. These being
Real, Howes and John McKean. Along with
these boys will be the sophomores men-
tioned above around which to build a team
for 1939-40.
