THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL, Memphis, Sunday Morning, January 31, 1954 intercstitig trip Due Class Slated To Graduate In Ma By W. AUBREY KING Special to The Commercial Appeal BRADFORD. Tenn., Jan. 30.--Graduation Day is a never-to-be- f0!'H0ltcu.cxpericnre, but it alone does not account for the excitement on the high school campus of this farming tovm in Eastern Gibson Coun ty. For the 38 graduating students of 1954 will strip off the solemn gowns of graduation rites immediately after the ceremonies are over and don traveling clothes for 10 days of what may be the most excit. ing trip of their lives-a trip to New York. J-In route there will be three days and nights in Washington, with tours to the White House, the Sen- ate and the llouse ot Representa- tives, the Bureau of lingraving, the Federal Bureau of Investiga- tion. the Supreme Court building, the Library of Congress. the Smith- sonian Institution, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memo- rial. The students will he graduated May 13. They will begin their trip that night by chartered bus. First stop will be Knoxville, where they will visit the Univer- sity of Tennessee. Roanoke, Va., will be their second stop. Lexing- ton, Va., is also on the itinerary for a visit to Washington and Lee University and the grave of Rob- ert Lee. After their sojourn in Washing- ton, the' group will move on to Philadelphia, where they will visit Independence Hall and the' Liberty Eell, and the homes of Betsy Ross, designer of the American flag. and ot' the American poet, Edgar Allan Poe. Magazines Sold A two-weeks magazine subscrip- tion drive sold almost 52,500 worth of the periodicals. No money was solicited of Bradford citizens but many volunteered contributions. One anonymous donor this week wrote out a cheek for 3200. Each year, Mr. Tuck reports, finds an increasingly larger num- ber of local citizens on hand to give the seniors a hearty. send-off. He expects almost 1,000 to be on hand this year. Driving the bus will be F. H. Gaston of Memphis. who chauf- feurs them each year. Bradtoi-d's school system has 660 students and 23 faculty members. To Visit Fort They will also visit Fort Mellen- ry in Baltimore and the United States Naval Academy at Annap- olis. After three days in New York. the group will begin the journey home via the Pennsylvania Turn- pike. They will stop in Chillicothe, Ohio, their last stop before Brad- ford. This will be the fifth consecutive year that the Bradford seniors have taken a post-graduation trip. Each year the seniors visit a dif- ferent section of the country. In 1953, the graduating class visited the Gulf States. They have been accompanied in the past by a few members of the Bradford faculty including Miss Bunice Ford, class sponsor, and Russell R. Tuck, principal. These two, and possibly a third faculty member, will ehaperon the group again this year. In preparation for the journey one period a week is devoted to the history and the geography of the places the students will visit. The fund needed for a trip of this length was surprisingly easy for the enterprising students to accu- mulate, at least to hear them tell it.
