Homeroom students on the east side of the school watch the rush hour traffic crossing the harbor bridge. The street and the community are named 4 after one of MiIwaukee's founding fathers. Below: Looking like another factory, Tech is situated in a highly industrialized area. 28 Student Life -Hui' Walkers Point: a historical community Have you ever heard of Walkers Point? Well, Milwaukee Tech lies in the midst of this historical landmark, once laden with cobblestone roads and early 19th century architecture. The site as we know it today extends from west of Scott Street, the southern border, to west Florida on the north , south 2nd marks the eastern boundary, while south 5th borders the west. Walkers Point's History began in 1884 with the arrival of pio neer-settler, George H. Walker. Walker was one of the three founders of Milwaukee. Solomon Juneau Cconsidered the origi- nal founder of both the city and countyb began a small settlement in the east called Juneau Town, while Byron Kil- bourn founded Kilbourn Town in the west and George Walker began what is still known as Walkers Point, to the South. ln 1848 Walker built a house between Third and Fourth Streets at Bruce, and lived there for four years. From the porch of his house, it was said, he could see down the aisles of Holy Trinity Church which was built on the west side of Fourth Street in 1850. Milwaukee Tech School of Trades was opened in 1904 founded by what is now the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce at East Oregon and South 1st Streets, where courses in carpentry, plumbing, pattern making, and machine shop were offered, it became part of MPS system in 1907. Fire destroyed this building in 1909, and William W. Maxwell a faculty member, drew the plans for a new school on the present site which incidentally is said to be a part of Walkers original cabin site. Milwaukee industry played a big part in the beer tawn's developement. By the late 1800's the city was a bustling community and much of its early history still lies in the bricks of the, still standing landmarks, one of which is only 2 minutes from Tech. The Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, with its tall, impressive steeple is the third oldest church building in the city still in use. This is a constant reminder of the historic richness of the community about our school.

With thoughts of home on hls mlnd, Mike Fuchs enters the no. 11 bus. Below: Feet are one form of transportation common to all students. Here students are walking from the bus stop. msghfi 1 Transportation poses problems Tech is located on the near southside side of Milwaukee in the heart ofthe cities' original industrial area. Transportation to and from school becomes an important part of the students' day. Many use the Milwaukee county transit system. Unfortunately though some drivers of the bus lines shun the thought of picking up students. Towards the closing of last year, problems arose, and immediately the buses were infested with undercover cops. After a few minor fines and even some arrests,'the after school bus lines were once again a bit more peaceful. Parking is a big problem at Tech. The school is surrounded on three sides by small, polluted streets. Many of those who drive to school get here much earlier than is necessary and sit in their parked cars. Unpredictable snow storms create sloppy roads and heavily congest- ed streets. As the spring draws near, more students can be seen on their bicycles or motorcycles. Some living closer may even walk to school, and transportation becomes less troublesome. Student Life 27
