VI:-IQLL, the YeIIow DeviI,' squadron, re-formed at NAS Alameda in JuIy, 1952, under it's present Commanding Officer, LCDR. A. N. Melhuse. After receiving severaI new officers, the squadron underwent intensive combat training at I:aIIon, Nevada, and the foIIowing January went aboard the USS BON HQMME RICHARD for carrier quaIifications. ReguIarIy a unit of Air Group IQ, it was assigned to the BOXER as the attack element of Air Task Group I in March I953. During the rigorous ORI in Hawaii, VI:-IQLL estabiished themseives as an vitaI eIement in the BOXER-ATG-I team. Aithough composed of many piIots uninitiated in actual combat fIying the squadron nevertheiess proved themseIves ready for the combat duty to foIIow. Upon arrivaI in Korean waters the first white fIag for Iaunch saw LCDR Meihuse Ieading the squadron's initiaI strike against the enemy. In mid-June when the Communists began a major offensive the squadron was called upon to fIy a maximum number of sorties each day. The squadron's performance during that period and up to the signing of a truce was such to make every man . . . piIots, ordnancemen, machinists, metaIsmiths and yeomen . . . justifiabiy proud of a job well done. Throughout the operating days at sea, safety, as usuaI, was the prime requisite of each fiight. Although there were a few mishaps resulting from engine faiIures and enemy gunfire the squadron compieted it,s 1953 combat tour grateful to The Almighty for no fataiities.
