The Ist division is sometimes called the torward 5 division. When raising or drop- ping the anchor, the lst division is the division that mans the anchor windlass and does the job. One ot the never ceasing jobs that the navy is well known For is keeping a neat ship and the First division has it's share ol: that also. Supervised by the Shipls Boatswain, these men are always on the job. It may be in the middle ot the night, ready to take on ammunition or relluel a ship underway. All hands stand watches ot one nature or another. The division is responsible tor the care and operation ot the Captain's Gig. Also connected with this group are the paint shop, the sail locker, the side cleaners who have the ever present job ol: keeping the hull ot the ship chipped and painted, and the incinerator. The caliber ot the division is most noteworthy in the manner in which they work together as a team-in this connection, the First Division is second to none.
