They main- tain a continuous visual watch on the signal bridge both at seaand in port, in order to maintain contact with nearby ships and shore stations by Flashing light, semaphore, Nancy gear and Flag hoists. The watchstander on the signal bridge has an important responsibility as a lookout also, since the most powerful optical instruments aboard are on the signal bridge. Along with the loolcout responsibility at sea comes vigil in port For gigs, barges and ships rendering passing honors. Since' a large portion ol: the ship's communications pass through the signal bridge, the work there is interesting as well as demanding.
