Xi N lt has been our desire throughout these months to build a book which will gather and keep permanent all your fondest dreams and memories of this school year. Here is the book and in it the record of the organizations and groups you have formed, the activities you have entered, and perchance some of the unposed incidents in which you have figured and which you will never forget. We hope that it holds for you all the memories, the thrills, 'and the icy-sa that it holds for us. It is our treasure house from Bowling Green High. May it also be yours. Secretary-Treasurer SPONSORS Miss Belle Potter Mr. W. B. Kerr 0155 or-ia Our Senior Class of 1944 is different from the classes of previous years in that several of its original members are now serving in the armed forces of this country. Directly after graduation others will undoubtedly join these ranks. Because of the uncertainty of our immediate future one might think that we could not look forward with the usual dreams and hopes that have inspired former Senior classes. This is not true. The demands of the years to come will not be a dis- couragement but a challenge to us. Our ideals shall be a beacon star that will guide us through these uncertain days. Always we shall have hope, hope that will help us to be ready to fill in the gaps left by those who had as high aims and ideals as we, but whose careers were cut short by the call to arms. , When the evening of our life has come to us and we take down from a shelf in our libraries this worn and aged volume, as we turn the pages looking upon each well-remembered face, may we live again the memories of happy days at Bowling Green High. When the fire burns low and scenes of the past troop by, we shall linger for awhile among the shadows, remembering the bright pages and our hopes to help rebuild a bleeding world. As the Senior Class of 1944 passes in review, it is our belief that each member will have contributed something worthwhile to this great cause. -1' 1: N 1 It ,. The team was handicapped considerably by the loss of sev- eral outstanding players to the armed forces. Coach Douglas Smith did a fine job with the team in spite of the fact that he had no assistants working with him as in previous years. The Purples opened the season September 17 with Manual at Lotisville and Went down be- fore a much heavier and stronger team by a score of 52-0. The next week the story was a much different one, the Purples winning their first game of the season over Tompkinsville by a score of 7-0. In the third game the Purples lost to Henderson 13-0 after the two teams had played neck and neck for three quarte1's. The following game the Purples were red hot against Glasgow 39-6. In their fifth game the Purples, led by Captain Charles Parrish, beat Murray 20-6 in a mud battle. Hopkinsville was the next opponent, and the Tigers beat the Purples 35-12. In the Homecoming game the Purples -overpowered Glasgow, with James Allen crossing the pay dirt three times. In their eighth game the boys were defeated 27-0 by a surprisingly strong Mayfield team, Coming back strong the next week, the Purples traveled to Owensboro and won a decisive victory over the Red Devils by a score of 26-6. In the traditional Thanksgiving Day Game and final game of the season, the Purples defeated Russellville 34-0. Those who played their last game for the Purples are Jimmie Bohannon, Chester Burgess, Billy French, Jimmy Kieffer, David Chesnut, Charles Bryant, and Charles Parrish. 0 ,.., 1 3 A 36 THE BEACON UNDEFEATED PURPLE QUINTET-Seated from left to right: Bobo Davenport, Jimmy Bohan- non, Dick Heman, Charles Parrish, Emerson Milton. The Purples had a record of twenty-eight wins and were rated by the Courier Journal the second best team in the state. Although they we1'e defeated by two points in their first game in the State Meet at Lexington, they showed that they had an excellent team. The Purples played in three tournaments d rring the year, in addition to the State.
