Overall, the team played an excellent game making the opposition fight for every point. Fate struck down a well improved quarterback, Rocky Chavez, when he broke a finger. Another blow took down the Bears as the new state “No pass-no play” ruling removed eight players from varsity, resulting in a merger of varsity and junior varsity teams. Although young in years and inexperienced, the new coalition looked excellent and showed much improvement. Boys On The Run The Boys Cross Country had a good year. The Varsity team did not win any meets but managed to do well with individual standings. The Boys B-Team placed two top ten finishes at the Burges Invitational. Jesse Shark placed fourth and Robbi Ponce, third. Armando Estrada, Jesse Shark, Carlos Sarmiento, Ramon Garcia, and Ignacio Trevino ran District at Coronado with good finishes. This second place finish would be the only non-first finish for the Varsity Girls. The No. 1 ranking in Texas for Bowie brought the girls enough publicity from the media to get them noticed in and out of school. Although it has been a tough year for most starters, since they lack in experience, they have shown much improvement throughout the season. Many of the young starters will be returning next year. They will be tough and experienced and looking forward to a more successful season. Improving The 1985-86 Soccer Team was a mixture of last year’s players and some new players. With this mixture of players, the Bears worked hard to be a good soccer team. The team worked toward making the playoffs and improving last year’s record of three wins, six loses and five ties. The Bears Soccer Team made the school proud of them with their play on the field. B-Team Holds Its Own Coach Sheree Solomon felt her team improved a lot since the beginning of the year. She also felt they gained a lot of confidence as the season progressed. However the young but talented Bears proved to be better than expected as they tied for first place becoming District Co-Champions. The Lady Bears showed they were still in district contention as they defeated the first place Irvin Rockets During the season the Lady Bears lost some close games but managed to defeat some of those same teams the second time around by large margins. Senior Rosie Martinez once again once led the district in scoring averaging 20.4 a game. Rosie Martinez was also named player of the year. Top Picture: Norma Sierra fights for the rebound. Angela 204 CLOSING v O 206 As the year comes to a dose, we reflect upon the good and bad memories of our school year. We remember some and try to forget others, but most pictures of our past are happy joyful times. Memories of dose friends and mischief come to mind. Honors and awards fill us with pride. “Just Doing Nothing” 208 Visions of teachers and undone homework remind us of the uneasy times, as do the conflicts caused by the No pass no play rule. But the joys of having championship teams overrides the problems. We remember the pride felt by having 3 District-winning teams-Volleyball, girls basketball and girls cross-country. The return of “The Machine,” the Wrestling Teams climb to the ninth place in State. We also remember being a part of the cheering crowd-a part of that neverending, never faltering Bowie Spirit.
