Rosa and Rita work with one of the students at Douglass. wggn--ff Teen Involvement is an anti-drug abuse program. It was started by Fort Bliss as a pilot program in 1972 with only a few schools participating. In 1973 students from all the high schools in the El Paso Independent School District were recruited to take part. Students were assigned local elementarv schools which they were to go to once a month. Before going to the feeder schools the students had to attend group discus- sions with a person from Fort Bliss in charge. Students learned about the drug they were supposed to talk about and also did the exercises they were to give the kids. The Teen Counselors, high school participants, talked to the students about a certain drug, had a question and answer period, and then played self-analysis games. In the fall of 1974 the El Paso Public Schools became in charge of the program, It is basically the same except that drugs are seldom brought up. The way that kids are being reached is by giving them exercises that allow them to find out about themselves. Elman Chapa rededicated the six ton War Memorial after it was moved from the old Bowie cam- pus of Guillen to its new home in front of the new buildings The Nlemorial stood on the old Bowie campus for 25 years and was moved in February. The plaques contain the names of Bowie boys who died in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Nlr. Early in the second quarter Frank Barrios blocked a Matador punt on the Parkland 11 yard line. On the next play Barrios carried for the first score. The other score came late in the final quarter when Rudy Somers recovered a Parkland fumble and raced 33 yards for the score. Parkland lost 5 fumbles while the Bears committed 2 turnovers. Ysleta took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter and it looked like the Indians were going to run away with the game. Bowie came back and scored a T.D. to close the gap. But with about a minute to play in the first half Ysleta scored on a controver- sial play which proved to be the turning point in the game. BEARS CAPTURE BI-DISTRICT TITLE AGAINST BURGES 70-58 Coach Robert Gavette and trainer Bill' Bell. Cane De Santiago rolls up 13 points if Baca cutting down the net following victory. The Bowie Bears after taking the 2 AAAA Champion- ship took onthe winners of the 1 AAAA, the Burges lVlustangs, in UTEP'S Memorial Gym before a packed crowd of 5,000, and came out with a hard fought victory 70-58, to win the bi-district crown . The last time this happened was in 1958 when Nolan Richardson was on the Bowie squad . The Bears led throughout the contest, thanks to the inside work of IVleIvin Patridge and Brewster. It was Bowie's domination on the boards that decided the outcome . lt was the 21st consecutive win ofthe year and the Bears went to the Regional Tournament at Abilene.
