I v 4 4 1 Y 1 1 AZTEC Bowie High 1973-1974 EiPaso, Texas 801 South San rcial Editor Mary Munoz Bowie was built on a 56.1 million tax fund on Cordova Island with a campus area of 64.9 acres. En- rollment for the first year was over 2100 students . This property was acquired from the federal govern- ment on January 1969 . Special features of the school are air conditioning, 30,000 volume library, cafeteria, community meet- ing room, circular amphitheater, photographic laboratory, gymnasium football stadium, eight tennis courts, eight handball courts, baseball field, covered open-air walkways between buildings, assembly room and 105 classrooms. Gymnasium is located on the west side of the school. It has a seating capacity of 2500. The gym was used for general assemblies, pag- eants, and pep rallies . A conces- sion stand was provided for re- freshments to be sold before and after games. The circular Amphitheater is locat- ed in the center of the campus . The seating capacity of the theater is 900. The theater is shaped on a octagon. This year it was used for meetings, assemblies, and concerts The seating capacity the stadium has is 8,000. While attending high school, Ulf vi she was in the Orchestra, P .E. Leaders Club and in the Juniorand Senior Honor Society. After she graduated, she attended U.T .E .P. and received her B.S. degree in 1962. Before coming to Bowie she taught at Hart Elementary. Miss Garcia, was born in Bracketville, Texas. Her hobbies include bowling, reading, cook- ing and stamp collecting. She has a French Poodle named Asavache. Miss Garcia has earned the love and respect Wlill... xqnpv--.. of all her students and she has en- couraged her students to continue their education and go on to college. in. 12 Dedication Mr. Nolan Richardson lVlr. Nolan Richardson, a 1959 Bowie graduate, rece'ived many basketball, baseball, and football honors while at- tending high school. Among these honors were NlostAthletic, All Conference Player, and Outstanding Basketball District Player. Other honors included president of the Nlasque and Gavel Club, ROTC Captain, All School Favorite and llllost Popular Boy. He adds l am the most original Hall of Fame at Bowie. He attended Arizona Junior College and Texas Western College, now the Uni- versity of Texas at El Paso. Although a science teacher, lVlr. Richardson coaches me varsity basket- ball and golf teams. i , by Nlr. A concert by ATZ LAN was held in the new gym at the begin- ning of school. Later in the month the Fiesta Beauty Contest featured student singers . Reggie Robinson, Pat Rangel, and Steve Najera, entertained the audience during the intermission, while the judges 1 were making decisions on the six finalists. Bowie students have always been famous for their musical talents . These programs add enjoyment for the audience. Some of these are: dressmaking, drafting, radio and tv, refrigeration, printing, metal trades, cosmetology, auto mechanics, auto electricity, auto front and building trades, data, brakes, industrial electronics, electrical trades. Bowie students seem to like dressmaking, cosmetology, auto mechanics, printing, and art among all the other courses. Any student who is a sophomore, junior or senior is eligible to enter TECH. Having in mind that he must keep at least a C average. The student either attends TECH in the morning or in the afternoon for three hours. The advantage of this program is that after graduation the student is well prepared. Student Council had their meetings every Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. The council had a problem this year due to the Quarter System. House of Representatives had to be elected each quarter because of changing of homerooms Officers of the council attended a meeting in October at Austin High to announce that Bowie would be hosting the Fall Workshop of Student Councils. The shop consisted of thirty-eight schools of Texas. The workshop was held on October 29. Go Western Day took place in February. Twirp week in March. lt's biggest event was helping the PTA at the spring Fiesta.
