ALLARD SPEECH English Military THE 1949 SQUAD The 1949 Football season found Bowie with a small but hustling squad, and with a completely new coaching staff. Coach Gibbs and his assistants were faced with the formidable task of getting acquainted withthe players and their abilities, plus building a team from comparatively few letter men. Most of the squad consisted of reserves who had yet to win their laurels on the gridiron. As the season unfolded mcmy of these reserves came through cmd distinguished themselves by their ability and aggressiveness. BARNEY FARLOW Line Coach He's from Texas Western. Coach PAUL fBucki GIBBS Bowies new mentor brought with him a vast store of athletic know-how. He lettered in all major sports at Howard Payne University after which he layed and coach- ed professional athletics in Seattle Washington. His higrh school coaching before comin here was at Ballinger exas, El Paso High and Ysleta High, xi? The greeting was wonderful and the treatment the Mesa school gave the Bowie Team and the Band was such that they all look forward to going again, but about game time something happened to that friendliness, The team of Mesa High forgot to be friendly and Bowie ended up on the short end of a 7 to 33 score. But after the game was over the good feeling came back, and all the Bowie delegation came home with nothing but praise for those worthy opponents and the school they represented. 1 Blau IUNIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL QQ :R ui- 5, xo I 5' N IM 4- N , x 'sax' ,x ARTURO TORRES LUPE PEREZ SALVADOR MARTINEZ President Sec'y-Treas. They were wonderingit the crowds would again cheer the State Champs and fete them with banquets and the like. By this time, when the book is out, we all know pretty well it Bowie has lived up to the standards set in 1949. One thing we did know in March was that it any team beat Bowie it was because that team had improved a lot, and not because Bowie had slipped. A big share of the 1949 players had returned and we still had our stellar coach, Nemo Herrera. The prospects were line and everyone was pulling for the team, The had feature ot getting out an annual to be delivered in the Spring is that im- portant events such as Baseball and Track cannot be reported except a year later. So in March all we could do was to give our heartfelt wishes for the team, and back them all the way. Our new Coach, Buck Gibbs, had a good turnout the first night of the track season. Some were experienced and the tour lettermen shown above can be expectd to take points for Bowie. They are, left to right: Gilberto Estrada, State Mile Championg Iesus Maynez, sprintsg Raul An- chondo, milep and Roberto Perez, 880, There are others not shown who will also be Valuable in the scoring column, Vsifdbwvea :-'- :3'-1-'ff - Smit' - ' - .
