Shilting Colors Introduction USS BOWEN bears the name of Vice Admiral Harold Cx. Bowen, Sr. Q6 November 1885 - 1 August 19657. A native of Provi- dence, RI and 1905 graduate of the Naval Academy, Bowen was a pioneer researcher in submarine and surface ship propulsion, nu- clear energy, and shipboard electric systems. USS BOWEN, built by Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, LA, was launched on May 2, 1970 and commissioned on May 22, 1971. With a length of 442 feet, beam of 47 feet, and draft of 26 feet, BOWEN displaces 4250 tons fully loaded. USS BOWEN operates most effectively as an independent antisubmarine patrol vessel, or in a task group to screen amphibious forces, underway replenishment groups, and aircraft carrier or battleship groups. BOWEN is often assigned to patrol coastal waters and the high seas, tracking Soviet submarines. USS BOWEN is equipped with the Navy's most sophisticated submarine detection equipment, a 5 f54 rapid fire gun, Harpoon missiles, the Phalanx Close-in Weapons System, and facilities for one LAMPS helicop- ter. USS BOWEN has deployed repeatedly to many theaters throughout the world, includ- ing the Indian Ocean in 1977 and South America in 1978. During BOWEN's 1985 deployment to the Persian Gulf and Mediterra- nean Sea, the ship was awarded the Meritori- ous Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commen- dation and the Navy Expenditionary Medal. In the winter of 1984, BOWEN completed a demanding cruise to the North Atlantic, partic- ipating in two major NATO combined exer- clses. USS BOWEN's most recent deployment was to the Mediterranean, March - October, 1985. - The BOWEN insignia was created by members of the BOWEN nucleus crew. It includes the heraldic symbol Cstag vulned with arrowl which is the coat of arms of the BOWEN family. The tridents symbolize the bearing of arms, emphasizing BOWEN's inher- ent strength and capability to strike with a three prong effect: beneath the sea, in the air, and on the sea surface. The eagle symbolizes the United States, and its place between the two tridents signifies the ship's motto, UPROTECT AND PRE- SERVE. Vice Admiral Bowen's rank is illus- trated by the three stars appearing on each side of the border. 2 I.
