Marvin johnson was born December 22, 1928. He graduated from Bowdon High School and reached the age of 19. Marvin had planned to go on to Fargo to attend the Agricultural College there. We'll always remember Marvin for the way he could brighten a dull conversation-. Robert johnson was born December 24, 1929. He graduated from Bowdon High School and reached the age of 17. Robert had a pleasant personality and a wonderful disposition. Gene Brynjulson was born May 29, 1929. He graduated from Bowdon High I School and reached the age of 18. Gene was a person who could be taken into confidence and who helped all when they were troubled. Duane johnson was born january 28, 1930. He would have graduated from Bowdon High School with the class of '4-8. Duane reached the age of 17. He will always be remembered by his pleasant smile and willingness to help with any class work. Duane and Marvin were brothers: Robert was their cousin, and Gene was a very close friend. MEMORIES They are gone, but certainly not forgotten: Forever through the days their memories will remain-- Their songs, their laughter, the words they spoke Are still and always will be a joyous refrain. We look upon them as if they are just asleep, Free from weariness, fear, and the wants of life, Free to go on to the road of happiness and joy Away from all the present toils and strife. And so we dedicate' this book of the year, To the four boys who went on ahead: They are the friends, the relatives, and the sons of us, Who for thankfulness and not for sorrow a tear should be shed. 1 , 1 S is i 41 N 4-1 e ' v F 4 43 'A F-,Q N 'al A 4.J?g.vg4fg, f 4 5-,Wig V Q if V T, , fm ?,,PiQ29b f 5 sW XR' 'Zim -:gif-' ig ' i, 77772201 - .3 ' L'-'PT' 99 - . ., 1-..n ' FAC u L T v l? if Q Y 1 NNEETN NG .4-.. z o NOT oss-cum5 'A 'eff' ff X X Alam Q J X Q rn 1, ' , 1511, W 1 xp I ' v Q- N 3'-62,-,f J, ffm' ,f J + Q31 I r :VK I 5 J 7 15 Q 3 : 125: 114 K 1 ISA in 1 FN 4. xg-.-,Bw-6..:,S, I '- fu 'LG , - 4 ' 131 X-1' 1,7 U 'Lv yv- I . This group consisted of eight boys: james Kunz, Marvin Hirsch, Marlin johnson, Duane johnson, Norman Schaubert, Darwin Schaubert, Ervin Wollman, Ernest Hoffg and eleven girls: Phyllis johnson, Mary Ellen johnson, Darlene Krueger, Bernadine Thorstenson, Ruth Mathre, Grace Mathre, Delores Bennetto, Adele Golder, LaVonn Tetz, Mildred Haux, and Audrey Farnumb. During the term we lost james Kunz, Marvin Hirsch, and Adele Golder, This left a total of sixteen to enter the second year together. Entering our second year all enrolled with the exception of Ruth and Grace Mathre, Mildred Haux, and Audrey Farnuzrng this left only twelve. We gained two girls: Lois Krause, who entered from Heimdal, North Dakota, and Audrie Schmidt, who entered from Puyallup High, Puyallup, Washington. LaVonn Tetz moved away during the summer. Beginning our junior year, Carol Nelson and Iva jean Reutter from Chasely started, but they both withdrew before the end of the year. During the summer, one of our classmates, Duane johnson, lost his life in a tragic car accident. This left only twelve of us to receive diplomas. The ones to receive diplomas are: Delores Bennetto Ernest Hoff, Marlin johnson, Mary Ellen johnson, Phyllis johnson, Lois Krause, Darlene Krueger, Darwin Schaubert, Norman Schaubert, Audrie Schniidt, Bernadine Thorstenson, and Ervin Wollman. During basketball games in our junior and part of our Senior year, we sold pop, bars, potato chips, and gum. This money went towards our senior skip-day. The outstanding event of this year was our Senior play, Peter, Beware ! which proved to be a success. Our class officers are: President-Mary Ellen-johnson, Vice President-Marlin johnson, Secretary-Treasurer-Phyllis johnson. Now that we are leaving school, we are wondering where our paths of life may lead. Whatever we do, we all want to be successful. To the Freshmen, we will our fondness for cake and chewing gurn and our skill in hitting the waste baskets with paper wads. Now we come to the personal bestowals which have been awarded to individuals with complete consideration to the fitness of the recipient. I, Darlene Krueger, will my knowledge to Phyllis Fortney. I, Audrie Schmidt, will my respect for teachers to Audrey Kelm. I, Lois Krause, will my ability to get along with Marlin johnson to Margie Kunz. With Mother away and Elmer safely tucked in camp, the girls of the Collier family decide to have a formal dinner party. It's a big event and as the T oceed with their prepar- tions they are thrilled with the pro ct of not having Elmer around to upset their smoothly planned schedule. But that little darling can't be kept in any one place for any length of time: no sooner have they expressed their joy at his absence when he pops in and not in too agreeable a mood. Social life has no appeal to Elmer, and girls--well, they're just taboo! It's the great outdoors that attracts our young hero-that is, until a sweet young thing by the name of Millicent Carr creeps up on him unaware. And Millicent seems to know just the right thing to say and when to say it. The lovebug gets Elmer and he's pretty badly bitten but with each bite the audience was furnished with plenty of good whole some comedy. Peter Beware , a comedy in three acts, was presented by the Senior class on February 24, 1948, under the direction of Miss Hehr . Peter Barrett will inherit several millions from his de- ceased Uncle, provided he doesn't marry within a year. If he does, Eunice, his half-sister, gets the money. Peter doesn't know this, but Eunice does. She promptly puts a bevy of good- looking girls on Peter's trail, hoping he'll be snared by one of them before the year is up. Poor Peter is pursued by damsels until he throws his hat in the door before he enters. Then, in comes Melinda, unspoiled and utterly adorable. She knows nothing of the will--and Eunice's ruse. Peter and Melinda are made for each other, and it doesn't take them long to find it out. Then Peter discovers why all the girls are paying so much atten- tion to him. He even suspects Melinda, and tells her off as a heart- less little gold-digger. But Flo, the negro maid, does a cupid act that brings down the house on a play that has a grand array of youthful parts. Cast: Peter and Melinda, a crafty Eunice, her sponging relative, and her hen-pecked Archie, the irrepressible Flo, a crafty stenographer, the three charmers whom Eunice engages, a Hollywood agent, and Sa.rn, Peter's likeable friend. We always knew you'd be a minister, but never did we guess that Doreen would be the organist. Now wait a minute students. Let us tell you of the lives of our former bosom friends and fellow classmates. Then maybe you'll understand why we dreaded to graduate and also why we want to go back to good old Bowdon High School. As we look into the future we find Delores busily typing a newspaper report covering the latest headlines. Oh yes, Ernie, we knew you'd make it with a soap-box and your gift of gab. You could start any political movement. We find Marly in his den with his basketball medals at his right, Nedra at his left, and his typewriter at his feet. It's twenty years and we find Tommy still on his knees: Mary Ellen hasn't made up her mind whether she'd rather teach or sell eggs. Phyllis, so help us, if you don't stop riding around in the red truck it's going to be a dead giveaway and you might as well give upg he still has to sell gas another 10 years before he receives the premium. Darlene hasn't quite made up her mind yet, but we do believe she is con- sidering the trucking business. Darwin, how you worked and slaved at your typewriter: well, a good dish washer always comes in handy, but we always did say you should have spent more time at Home Economics than on typing. Norman must have started something when he took the part of a popular man in the Senior Class Play. The girls are still flocking around him. Oh, we see it now, you've started a knitting class. We find Audrie at her beauty parlor and she has a helpful husband: well, forevermore, Marvin did get her, and guess what he does for a living ? He plays the guitar and mouth organ while Audrie sets hair and manicures nails. The song that started their love was Doodlie Doo. Okay, Berny, we thought you'd end up in Minnesota, but never once did we realize that you'd learn to play the accordian that lay behind the sofa. We see Lois working in a drug store the rest of her life waiting on jerks. Of course she gets all the news and passes it on to us. QSince when, Marvin Heil also seems to take up a lot of her spare time--,but I believe that is love. 7: :ji f , wr, 5 gf, 4.-,, A . 5 1, - 1-,Y , x f,, J wi ,f 'iiqsikil Him w 1, , v r . For you freshmen, we show our deepest sympathy. Or should we? Didn't we upper classmen have to go through the same ordeal? How the teachers could survive that day, September 2.4, is beyond me. You'd have to laugh every time you'd look at the Freshrnan row. Of course on the other ex- treme, there Were a few that appeared very attractive. Take for instance, Norma Fuhrman, the gal with the housecoat, slippers and pin curls. Ardyce Thorenson, with her complete cowboy outfit, and jackie Grover with his clown suit, paint, etc. Typical negroes were Art Lensegrav and Clara Mae Rexine. lncidentally they made a very cute couple! Are these the olden days again? One would have thought so if you would have seen Donna johnson and Bobby jesse. Donna made a charming Indian woman. The latter was dressed as a pirate. At noon hour, one could have noticed many business men peering out of their windows. Why? Well it was the customary parade in which every freshman had the privil- fs-g-E of participating. Ask Charles Thorstenson why he was a little chilly upon returning: remember that he was the lady for the day. Wig, stockings, dress, and purse changed his appearance considerably. At 8:00 P. M. we all got together at the school gym. A rather interesting question on the program was asked by a sophomore of Don jorgensong it was: Do you think Teachers will get to Heaven? It would be a very inter- esting question for debate in English class. How about it Miss Hehr ? The evening came to a close with the serving of hot dogs and pop. It really wasn't too bad-was it, Freshmen? Alb X F 5 f r -. This year we started collection dues for future use. THE jUNlOR CLASS OF 1948 In the junior class of 1948, there are fifteen members. We started the school year rather quietly, but soon we began to raise funds for our junior activities. To do this we sold pop, potato chips, and candy at the basketball games which were home games. We also pay dues each month as another means of raising funds. Our junior play will be directed by Miss Elsie Hehr. The proceeds from this play will be used for our junior-Senior Banquet, which will be in the spring. It is to be semi-formal with a Hawaiian setting. THE PRIMARY ROOM We are all busy trying to learn to read, so that we can enjoy the many interesting stories there are in books. Then there are numbers to get acquainted with, words to write, pictures to color and draw, and songs to sing. We have enjoyed our new slide outside. When the weather has been cold we have played with our farms and store, or with dolls and toys brought from home. Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine day we had so much fun. We also enjoyed a lot the day many of our parents came to see us. We hope you will come again. 3a.nd4 There are seventeen enrolled in the third and fourth gradesg five girls and twelve boys. As a project for history and language work, we are making booklets, containing short stories about the lives of Great Americans. For Art class we made Winter Fun Scenes and used them as a border for our room. Our room enjoyed a party on Valentines Day. 5and6 We began the school term with twenty-three in our room. Those leaving us were Elizabeth Backmeier, Robert Lee Garver, Willis Wollman, Bernadine and Regina Backlneier As a project of our Y. C. L.. organization, we sent several boxes of clothing to a needy family in Germany. D Our Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine Party were enjoyed by everyone. 7and8 On the morning of September 16th, thirty, seventh and eighth graders trudged up the pathway to knowledge. At the close of the second month jim Wollrnan went to another school, but at the beginning of the ninth week Dennis Lund joined our ranks, bringing the nurnber again to 30. The Thursday evening before Halloween, faculty members and our room gathered in the gym for an evening of fun. As a result of the effort put forth by our program, game and lunch committees, the party proved very enjoyable. For the Christznas Program which was given at the town hall, our room took part in the Glee Club and gave two dialogues. Many parts had to be substituted, but the parts were well done. The girls sang Little Bluebird of My Heart as a nurnber between acts when the seniors gave their play. .V M, -5 A we 145,22 ,nf 1 '5fi'ff.f wal , W, mm 4 1 ,gwgefgz 41, V '. .mf-L ' . JM.. . The big night, November 17, 1947, proved to many of the Bowdon residents and others that our high school has some very promising singers and actors. Those singing solos were: Donna Rodacker, Gurmen Schimke, Phyllis Fortney, Norman Schaubert, Audrey Kelm, Elaine Graupman, Lois Krause, and Marlin johnson. . To sparkle up the entertainrnent there were six eighth grade girls who sang, 'six Little Maids taken from The Mikado. Near the middle of the program a one-act play was presented, Hans Von Smash It was put on by some of the freshmen and sophomores. The cast included jack Grover-Hans Von Smashg Marlyn Schaubert-Mr. Batch, jack Krueger-Henry Dasheri Bob jesse-Mr. Prettyman: Donna johnson-Mary Batchg Clara Mae Rexine-Susie Patchg and Ardyce Thorstenson as Katie, a servant. The play was very amusing and pro- duced many a laugh. The girls ensemble also sang. This group included most of the high school girls. Their nurnber, Dedication, was well sung and directed. In between numbers, Mr. Simmons and the band gave us some nurnbers which included Little Rastus and Pursuit Squadron. Miss Hehr directed the play and the other musical numbers. We thank her and Mr. Sirnmons for making it possible for us to present this program. We took in S51.95. There was an expense of Sl0.91. This left the net proceeds as S-40.94. The money was used for part-payment for a new set of Compton's Ency- clopedia for the high school library. THE CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The school's Christmas program was held on the night of December 23, 194-7. Every room contributed to some part of it, thus making it a big success. Composed of 76 voices, the seventh-eighth grades, and high school sang, Oh Come All Ye Faithful in two parts. A group consisting of 17 boys sang, O Little Town of Bethlehem in four parts. Their ability surprised many of their parents and friends. The high school girls ensemble, which was in three parts, sang a minor piece, My Sheep Were Grazing. Mary Ellen, Doreen, and Audrie served as an echo chorus in the refrain. The first to sixth grades, inclusive, formed a human Christmas tree, under the direction of Miss Aslakson. This was arranged very effectively by means of steps beginning with the smallest and ending at the top with one sixth grade girl fArla Maej. Several group combination as well as solos rendered the beautiful, age old carols. The band under the direction of Mr. Simmons, rendered a medley of Christnias carols. We thank our faculty for their time and work that they put in so that we would have an enjoyable evening. ,QW wr' 1 fa gy 41 :1 , LQ 5 .Q 1 1 f n 1 1 f 4 , 1 - ,111 1' X' 1 Q 1 1 .
