SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the Class of l9ll6,began our earlier training in var- ious schoolsg therefore few of us have come through the eight grades together. None of the class graduated from the Bowden School as eighth graders, but we began as Freshman here. Our first years of school were not spent together but each of us tried to grasp the fundamentals for a foundation to later history. we all managed to make the eighth grade up to standard. The freshman year started with an enrollment of eleven: Marie Anderson, Russell Buchmiller, Garry Hart, Marvin John- son, Bernice Kleinsasser, LeRoy Koenig, Lois Lester, Paul Mathre, June Mielke, Norman Remboldt, and Loren Untersehen Later in the year we decreased to eight members with the loss of Garry, Bernice, and Marvin. The outstanding event of our freshmangwnr was hntiation. The boys spent the day dressed as girls and the girls spent the day dressed as boys. In the evening the high school was invited to a party given by the Sophomores, at which we fur- nished the entertainment. Beginning our Sophomore year, the class remained the same. We all worked hard and soon found ourselves Juniors. Alette Hoefs and Edna Welppert, who attended school in Chaseley, became members of our class as Juniors. Shortly af- ter school began Lois Lester left. Several members of the class were represented on the boys' and girls' basket ball team. During the summer Paul Mathre moved away. This year we began in earnest to make history. With the beginning of the Senior year Marvin Johnson a- gain joined the class. The outstanding event of the year was our Senior Class Play, HHere Comes the Pr1nce,N which was pre- sented very successfully. The receipts from the play will be used for our skip day. Those who will receive diplomas at the May Commencement are: Marie Anderson, Russell Buchmiller, Alette Hoefs,Marvin Johnsong LeRoy Koenig, June Mielke, Norman Remboldt, Loren Unterseher, and Edna Weippert. Class officers are: President, Marvin Johnsong Vice-pre- sident, Edna weippertg and Secretary-treasurer, Alette Hoefs. Leaving school,we wonder where our paths of life may lead. For the boys the immediate prospect will be induction -into the armed forces. 13.1 Q ve Q. .ww-:1 L- :.1 ' v , '- l'+- I ' wiv- 'i:cfi,... ,f' '. .':f.,v , , 146, :uf ' sf ,L 'Hr fi- 35. 5 ww 4 . - , iff r 1 I my N! b L L Q -, -Pg, ' 1 5 . .N gl A Y, 7 , R gb- V .. Third, to our advisor,Mr. Orvedahl, we will our deepest athies for being able to give us his tolerance and guid- during the past year. To the entire school we leave the example we have set orthy scholars and blameless students. Our record has been spotless and in all the annals of our career we have done no deed, as a class, that we need blush for. To the Junior Class we bestow our richest treasures, which of course everyone knows. They are our Senior dignity our excellent w1t,our brilllancy, our good looks, our charm- ing manners, our favor with the teachers, our splendid grades and our truimphant exit as the most popular class this school has ever seen. Our valuables we pass to them such as: our largeness of heart, our capacity for fun, our ability to giggle over our they good times, our friendship and our loyalty, and we hope count them among their riches CNow Juniors there is enough for allb. have erat with Now we come to the following personal bestowals which been awarded to individuals with complete consid- ion to the fitness of the recipient. CLASS PROPHECY Looking into the future we see that Father Time hasn't treated his prodigies badly. He has been very kind to them, even though he has scattered them to the four winds. Let us go see what has happened to them. Here in Washington ------ of all people Marvin Johnson as President. we thought his gift of talking would get him someplace. g LeRoy Koenig is a very successful ranchman. His beau- tiful wife helps him as much as she can. Russell Buchmlller 1sn't sayin , 'You look so natural S today'. He's trying to make others look natural, you see he ps an undertaker. He says, UBusiness is f1ne.n His motto 'Abandon hope all ye who enter herein.N June Mielke 1sn't out for adventure. Her plans as far as being a teacher didn't come true. Now she is a housewife. Back here in Bowdon is Marie Anderson, not Miss but Mrs She has a cute little house and spends most of her time en- tertaining her husband and children, Norman Remboldt, we find in Nebraska as a minister. His wife is very helpful as she sings in the choir and is a very nice little housekeeper. HGet in there, girls, and fightln Yep, 1t's Edna Weip- pert coaching her basketball team and thrilling all thelxws on the sidelines. What is nicer than a secretary! And that's just where we find Alette Hoefs taking dictation from Loren Unterseher who is now managing a new super market where hams are the specialty. WE NW SENIOR CLASS PLAY nHere Comes the Pr1nce,H a farce comedy,by Anne Coulter Martens, was presented by the Senior Class on hunmryl6, 1946 before a nice crowd. The play kept the audience well enter- tained throughout. Terry is engaged to Carol and never sus- pects that Joan loves him. Carol is the Glamour type where- as Joan seems just as a good pal or a kid brother to Terry. when Carol learns that a Prince is coming to visit, she gives Terry the air. Joan comes to Terryfs rescue by dressing him as a new cook, Hortense. Plenty of fun follows, for Terry is always making blunders and trying to dodge the love making of the butler. Joan, meanwhile, poses as a Prince and tries to make Carol fed up on Princes before the real one arrives. One would never believe that the entire affair coulddbe set- tled. Preceding the carnival follies the Bowden Elementary and High School presented a brief program which consisted of a few musical numbers from the elementary grades, a short play from the third and fourth grade room, and musical num- bers by the g1rl's glee club. In addition to this a short mystery play was given by some of the high school students. The title of the play was NAL the Stroke of Twelve. The characters in this play were as follows: Liza-a colored ser- vant-Doreen Martlng Eileen-a young girl in her teens-Phyllis Fortneyg Miss Briggs-Eileen's maiden aunt-Audrey Schmldtg Miss Sample-gossipy neighbor-Eileen Buchmillerg George Baker who admires Eileen-Russell Buchmillerg and the ghost imper- sonated by Miss Huss. The play proved to be quite asuocess. u E 5 Following the program came the regular Carnival Follies. Different groups being assigned to various stands such as bond stand, fishing pond, bingo, basketball throw, fortune telling, etc. A S25 bond and door prize were given to the fortunate holder of the lucky numbers. Being very crowded it made it almost impossible to move around the hall at the busiest time. Being one of the last statements mentioned but not regarded as so concerning the carnival, we wish to thank all those who helped make it a success. Mary Vanderlip, helressanuimnr er of Purple Towers, returns from her school in Paris to find that her agent has leased the property to Miss Urseba Apple- gateg and also to Phil Bradley, who rented it becaua hewanb- ed to describe the home of his father's bitterest enemy who was Mary's father. During this time, however, Purple Towers had been in use by Red Nichols, a prize fighter, and his man- ager, Earl Parker, who are using it for training quarters.De- ciding to make their escape, they discovered that they had left the contract for a great fight at the place. They wish- ed to return so they told everyone the house was haunted. Miss Applegate is not the type of person to believe in this, and so she proceeds to invite everyone at Centerville railway station to her home for a party. Even Phil Bradley who as yet didn't know if he or Miss Applegate was to have Purple Towers accepts the invitation because of his love for Mary Vanderlip, now known as Mary Marble, who was mistaken for the Applegate cook. They all left for Purple Towers in Hank's Pink Taxi Upon reaching Purple Towers they searched high and low for the contract, which gives a good clue that the place was haunted. Snowball-Phil's valet, and Tillie-the maid, are es- pecially frljhtened. Tillie collects everyone's valuables and accidently exchanged one belonging to Red. Mary gets the blame for this. She cannot reveal her identity because she loves Phil and she's afraid he'll hate her when he finds out that she is the daughter of his father's bitterest enemy, but before long Red and Parker are caught and everything is ex- plained. Phil Bradley being so in love with Mary Marble for- gets his dislike of the Vanderlip family and the curta1nfaDs with the prospect of a wedding. The whole operetta is accompained by the gingham chorus and solos from most of the characters. I wonder if we will get the electric chair? Aren't you scared? All these remarks came from a class of sixteen green freshmen in the year of 1946. Yes, October 23, was just one day off. Let us look in on some of our freshmen the night before the eventful day. First, we look into the window of the Fortney home, and behold everything peaceful and quiet. Ohl but who is this just opening the closet door. Why, 1t's dear little Phyllis coming out with all types of clothes. The same thing is happening in all the other freshmen homes. Well here it is time for school. We see them com1ng.well what's this,we see Jim Kunz with some type of conclomeradon. Is this what Phyllis Fortney was looking for last night? I wonder if her father will miss that big sheepskin overcoat.I can't imagine who those old ladies are that I see walkingup the street, oop's, sorry that's Arlo and Jim. Say, what's this, a walking baby? Oh! that's Gurmen. Doesn't he look adorable in those pretty blond curls? The rest of the class were dressed as fat women, farmers, glamour girls, and gunny sack boy. In this manner the freshmen spent the day to the enjoyment of the rest of the school. In the evening the sophomores had everything planned. We started the party with movies to ease our minds a bit.Wevnre then asked to remain in the assembly until they called for us in the basement. We did not merely walk to the base- ment as one ordinarily would, but we Hrolledn through tires for the length of three flights of stairs. After getting one selves in shape for the next persecution, we were asked to be seated. The sophomores began to ask rather embarrassing questions and performances of us. Doreen was asked toch five simple reducing exercises, and I wonder why Phyllis Fortney and Jimmy Kunz were pronounced Drlppy and Droppy in the mock wedding which was performed before Gurmen Schimke. We then were blindfolded and pushed off into another room. Did this mean the electric chair? I bet it did. Oh! it just can't be. Doreen added to the excitement by one of those Hfaken faint- ing spells. All it finally amounted to was to remove our shoes and stocking and walk through some nice cooked noodles ----er---a, I mean worms. The boys were next to recelve the rough treatment, which was given by the girls and what was it. Nothing else but a nice Hsoothingu fnclalu. Ho, did I say soothing! The first step, of course, was the base,wh1ch was cold cream, and then the powder, or do I mean flour.Thls ended our torture plus a few more acts. We then ended our party w1Lh but dogs and cokes. It wasn't so bad after all. 1IOXI vim n 11,, Jfv-fuilnulrl? 5 M419 fr li MOR 1 1 , ,f. ,. K ,Q L ,1 , . 4 , 52:5 l 4,3 .',.. VE lm Q. 1 ..
