Busy isn't the word for it. Ever junior on guard so as not to let the prom theme out and everbody in a tizzie over the work to be done. After a long hard discussion with a few rounds of Fists and hammering of he1GS together we decided and settled down to getting the supplies and the decorations, ard the hard work began. If you happen to see Mr. Borchert lately and he looks a little tired and HHQTBPG, you might have a little pity for him. It seems the chemistry class was not blessed with bud- ding geniuses. And then we can't forget out play WWE SHOOK THE FAMILY THEEH. Brother we really shook it when Audrey called her da a drunkard and whatnot. Kenny seemed to steal the show with his problem of having to wear knickers because his mo- ther didn't want to look old. We can't forget Phyllis who likes to play postman and Wayne and Wendell with all their friend trouble. Again the juniors proved that they were not such a dull class by walking off with the winning float at homecoming. It was the red and white candy cain float NL1ck Emu. It al- most looked real. And what would we have done without our junior athelets Wayne, Gordon, Roger and Tim. It was hard sledding but they gave all they had and they helped make one of the best teams Bottineau ever had. To mention those in track and football would be a little hard to do but we were right behind them pulling all the way. To mention those in Concert Choir and Band would be too numerable so we'll just say we were well represented. Thats just about all there is to report except we'll see you again next year. Sophomore Soap Last year's greenhorns are really getting into the swing of things now. Here are just a few things to prove this. le girls did many strange things in home ec., like visiting the slaughter house. Luckily we all came back in one piece. le also played nursemaid for a day. We hate to admit it but we had fun play- ing the old games like London Brudge, Ring-Around-the-Rosy, etc. There are many sophomores in band, chorus, and smaller musical groups including soloists. We are also well represented in atheletics. To sum up history class we'll quote Miss Stewart as she said, nl often wonder what the sophomore class is coming to.' Oh, well, 0h00P UP, Miss Stewart, Edison was considered a dunce in school, too, and look at how much he added to history. There is never a dull moment in English class. For instance, recently a specimen of Melanoplus bivittatus Qgrasshopper in other wordsl somehow got into English class and, we hate to tell you this, Mr. Borchert, but Mrs. Weeks d1dn't seem to appreciate it. fSomehow it didn't seem to fit in with our study of nJulius Caesar'.l Speaking of grasshoppers, in biology class we had a lot of fun taking things apart to find out what makes them tick. le boys have fun chasing greased pigs or some such things during ag. classes. Of courseuthere are some in our class who had to be different and they took Latin II and general business. le did something new this year by ordering class pins. However there seem to be some boys who have already 'lost them ?I?l Thanks to our advisors Mrs. Ieeks and Mr. Borchert, we sponsored two successful parties this year. The first was sophomores only at which those who knew how to dance taught those who d1dn't. After that we felt more confident so we had an all-school party at which we danced and played games. Harriet was the lucky girl who was chosen sophomore cheerleader. We also had candidates up for Homecoming Queen. iii-fi cLAss or 1956 PP6SidBnt ------- ------ Kay Shank Vice President -------- Dennis Rosberg SGCPGUHPY ------------ -Carl Freeman Treasurer ------------- Harriet Berg FRONT ROW: Horace Borchert, Instructor, Shirley Knutson, Norma Beyer, Bette Gillies, Geraldine Weise, Shirley Getzlaff, Audrey Hanson, Marie Boguslawski, Doris Fugere, Alice Christenson, Laura Mahler, Dorothy Cain, Virginia Trambley, Beverly Beckman. BOTTINEAU HIGH BAND The Bottineau High School Band, long known as one of the most out- standing High School Bands in North Dakota, has enjoyed top ratings at state music contests for the past seven years. These ratings, include not only the band itself, but soloists and ensembles as well. An active unit, the concert band performs two major concerts a year, plays for ball games, the Bottineau County Fair, and takes part in marching engagements at home and in Canada. Soloists and ensembles appear before Civic groups and in concerts as well as competing in music contests. The opportunity for indiviual and small groups to perform is considered an integral part of the experience of band mem- bers by Arnold Opland, capable band director. The Concert band, numbering between 60 to 65 pieces, meets each day of the school week. The Beginners' Band, 51 members, meets four times a week and in the Elementary School a beginners class of 30 members and a grade band of 32 members meet every day. Harlan Skar, vocal director at the Bottineau High School, assists Arnold in this tremendous band program. This year for example, Mr. Skar is working with the Senior High Marching band and the Junior High marching band. Arnold Opland, one of the most well known and liked of North Dakota bandsmen, is a graduate of Minot State Teachers College BUG has attended one summer session at the University of North Dakota. In his ninth year at Bottineau, Arnold has continuously done the type of work that makes him not only a credit to his community but to the entire field of musical eduaction as well. Our most sincere congratulations to you, Arnold Opland, and your Bottineau High Band. The band received the following ratings in the contests in which it participated. CONCERT CHOIR NEWS The Bottineau High School Concert Their, under the direction of Mr. Harlan Skar has hal a very bury anl suczesvfll year. Competing in several music contests, the choir consisting of Sh members, has received superior ratings. The choir had two contest pieces on which they worked very hard this year. They were as follows: SING AND REJOIC3 and FATHER MOST HOLY. One of the highlights of the cho1r's activities was the spring trip to Boissevain, Manitoba, to present two concerts, the first to people of school age and the evening concert to the public. To wind things up during the spring term, the choir presented its annual spring concert at Thatcher Hall. This concert was sort of a farewell pledge to the choir's able director, Mr. Skar, for his two wonderful years of choir direction and management. The choir wishes to express sincere gratitude and regret to their loss of Mr. Skar, and wish that the happiness and good luck of his past two years will follow him wherever he goes. We are happy to say that most of the freshmen girls at the first meeting wire initiated into our organization later on. One of the first events in the fall was the district rally at Belcourt. Most of the girls attended and Jean Ralston was chosen from this district to be state secretary. The first week in November was State and National FHA Week so each day was designated for some particular activity. With some of the fall enthusiasm over the projects and goals were being carried out. The state projects chairman designated January as nFamil1es Together Month.u Some of the other things that were emphasized were: safety, handicapped children, leadership train- ing, tuberculosis and polio campaings, and UNESCO. On February 16th an all school game party was sponsored by the FHA. Each class competed in the relays and of course the pie-eating contest. When the evening came to a close the points were added up and the SENIORS were the grand winners. Finally one of the year's highlights arrived, the state convent- ion. The girls who attended were: Janis Gonitzke and Helen Brandvold, chapter delegates, Lona Jean Fugere, Gwen Lee, Audrey Jones, Margaret Patterson, Loueen Brandvold, Jean Ralston, State Secretary and Harriet Johnson, State Vice-President of Projects. Bottineau received high honors by being honor roll chapter and receiving the Phi Upsilon Omicron award which is given to the outstanding chapter in the state. There were also four girls who received their state nomemakers degree- Jean Ralston, Audrey Jones, Harriet Johnson, and Gwen Lee. In drawing this very busy and exciting year to a close the girls are having a program for the mothers, when degree pins will be awarded, and their usual picnic. Miss Herigstad, our advisor, for the past two years, has been a wonderful help and we know that she has furthered our progress in earning our awards and degrees. We wish to express our great- est appreciation for all that she has done for us. F. H. A.
