Mr. Lewis reports that at that time the boiler room floor in the high school was half covered with water, the concrete being just enough to keep the furnace out of water. At this time planks were the paths of travel. The present coal bin which Scribe built is a far cry from the one here when he took the job. The old bin held fourteen tons of coal and had to be filled almost every week. The new bin Mr. Lewis built holds one hundred tons of coal and is more convenient. Along with building a new coal bin, Scribe painted and fixed up the boys' basements in the high and grade schools. He also added a protective coatin of thin wood over the concrete blo ks at the north end of the gymnasiu . From 1929 to 1952 Scribe' has been janitor except for two yea s during World War ll when he wor ed in the shipyard. During these t o years the job changed hands fo r times, until it came back to Scrib Along with these achievements S ribe has made friends with all the s dents of this school. He always ha a smile and a cheery hello for veryone. Every class that has gradu ted from the high school has liked Scribe, For this reason we dedicate this page to him, our good friend an janitor. THE LOG BOYS' BASKETBALL '52 COACH LLOYD CAPEN Starting with a nucleus of six Seniors the hopes of Boothbay Harbor High's basketball team were high when the team met with new coach Lloyd Capen for the first time. The boys played their first game against Brunswick away and lost that and the next game with Lincoln ariscotta. The Seahawks then got moving and lost only two morezlt t Dam- he rest of the season. The Seahawks racked up double wins over Waldobo 0, Wis- casset, Thomaston, and Camden, winning once over Lincoln, nd the Alumni. The boys also defeated Lincoln in the League play-off. T, ey lost to Richmond, Winthrop, Lincoln and Brunswick. The Seahawks played most of the season starting Dick Reed a d Dave Abbott at the forwards, Paul Abbott at center, Herb Winslow, Millie Mar- shall and Norman Stone at guards. Although these men carried most of the burden throughout the season the others on the team deserve ention also. It was the second team that provided the starter with their o position at practice, and kept them in condition for the games. No matter hat the game was the Seahawks came up with a man to fill in the hig scorers spot. The Hrst of the season it was Dick Reed as high scorer, Dav Abbott took over at Camden and Herb Winslow scored his high at Th maston, while Paul Abbott was high man in the play-off. ' After losing their first league game to Lincoln the Seahawlls swept the rest of their league games including the play-off to win the fir t Knox- Lincoln League Basketball Championship in B. H. H. THE LOG KNOX-LINCOLN LEAGUE PLAY-OFF Newcastle June 1 1, 1951 SOFTBALL Hopes were high up to the last inning for the girls on Boothbay Harbor High School's team, and the Knox-Lincoln League Championship seemed comfortably tucked away. Then came the startling 7th, when the Waldo- boro girls nosed out the Boothbay Lassies 9-8. The game was played on Lincoln Academy field at Newcastle on June 11. The play-off contest was made necessary when the two teams ended the season tied for first place. The Seahawks got away to a flying start in the game, batting in four runs in the first inning. Waldoboro, meanwhile, could only bat in one. The second inning both teams failed to score. But in the next, the Harbor tallied once, while Waldoboro crossed the plate twice., Both teams came up with a pair of runs in the fourth and Waldoboro played another in the fifth. 1 Thanks to the home run by Priscilla Reed in the sixth inning, Boothg bay Harbor Waltzed out in front, 8-6. Going into the final frame, Waldoboro's bats broke loose and broke Boothbay Harbor's heart by pounding out three runs. Exactly enoughuto win, and copped the title in the last inning.
