THE PYTHIA lxttle dog IS black and Whlte s1ster named her Tr1x1e She barks and barks Wlth all her mlght Shes just a lxttle P1X19 She used to sleep upon my bed But now shes ln dlsgrace She went out where the wood klttys are And met one face to face Maxme Crowley 47 1 8 Th1s should have been 1n the Xmas Sea Gull Last mght when everythxng was stlll Around the Chr1stmas tree I crept downstalrs to take a peek As qulet as could be My daddys coat was on the cha1r A box was on the floor A b1g box l1ke dad s su1t came ln Lay empty by the door I heard some people talklng My darlmg someone whlspered But then I ran rlght back I don t know what I ought to do Im all upset because What I saw there was mother She was k1SS1I1g Santa Claus N ORTHERN WINTER The howllng wmd went swlrllng down across the barren frozen wasteland across lee choked bays and mlets across mounta1ns of Slldlflg treacherous snow then out over the ea to be lost unt1l It would reach oth er lands As Jack Shepherd looked out of the small lone frosty YV1IldOVSS of h1s outpost shack that was all he saw A cold empty space Wlnterl Hard cruel unmerclful Northern wlnter that destroyed exervthlng 1n 1ts 1each mans t1mes ex en man For four months Jack had been tendlng th1s ma1l stat1on It w as one of the many separated by seventy mxles from each other A monotonous x1g1l w as h1s as all he d1d w as to keep both ma1ls sorted and ready for the dog sleds and refreshments for the drlvers But as he watched he felt p1tv for those men that had to drne hun dreds of m1les every week through thls b1tter wllderness He also was proud of thelr courage but h1s thoughts turned to the ragmg wlnter outslde h1s door and of the three men that had been beaten bv lt even the1r great sp1r1ts broken one of them nex er to be found A s1gh of rellef escaped h1s l1ps as the northern drn er Roberts appeared ox er the r1se Jack greeted h1m llghtlv and ex changed h1s mall for a few small sup plles that had been sent to h1m Then the man was gone Turnmg to h1s small woodstoye Jack prepared h1S supper after whlch he contented hlmself by select mg 1 book from a great collect1on Then as he was gomg to bed he sud den v stood xery st1ll He had heard that low ommous moanmg so manv tlmes before snowfall O penmg h1s cabm door he saw great thlck snowflakes beat1ng down dr1x en on by a KICIOLIS Northeast wlnd He looked at h1s watch Roberts was st1ll manv m1les from h1s next stop Jack turned 1ns1de and shut the door There was a wo1r1ed look 1n h1s eves In h1s mmd he could see the drlxer head My , U' .' . . , . . . . , .
