Those words very accurately describe the spirit present in our sports, clubs, and school life this past year. How could we help but catch some of this excitement on our Chieftain staff? Our motto was “out with the old, in with the new.” The editors came up with some great and different ideas for this new Chieftain. We have finished our work at last, and the entire staff and I have faith that you, the subjects of this book of history, will treasure these pages as much as we value the privilege of putting them together. I now extend my sincerest thanks to my invaluable staff, to Mrs. Beard, and to a very supportive faculty for another great year. So, to you BSHS, I give you your “1969 Chieftain.” Sincerely, %Ui. 4 THE ALMA MATER Here ’mid the hills and field of green She spreads her dome beneath the skies, All ’round her sleep the valiant men Who gave their lives that she might rise. Boonsboro High to her we all have come Our aspirations to embrace Vision we find in our youth home Illuminates the world we face. Here come the minds that long for wings. Here come the searchers for the light. Here seek our hearts the word that sings. Here live the guardian of the right Boonsboro High-she holds for us the key To progress on the upward path, Opens the door that we may see-Follows the dream, follows the faith. 5 ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION DR. J. WILLARD NEWTON In retrospect, a review of this school year, 1968-69, fills us with satisfaction. While unrest and disruption have impeded the learning process in many areas of our nation, it is gratifying to record that Boonsboro High has “accentuated the positive” to such a pronounced degree. Our students have pursued their course with a sense of purpose, and no indication of repression. Personal responsibility has lightened faculty supervision. Achievements have been commendable. Through sports, music, clubs and organizations, and individuals, top honors have added prestige to our school. And our graduates will leave us with an impressive amount in scholarships merited through their own efforts. Seniors have justified an innovation here which is new to the county—a weekly Seminar which provides opportunity for increased student self-determination. As the Chieftain records in its pages education’s passing parade, we can truly say—Yes, it was a good year! It has also been one of learning, whether in class or on the athletic field. As President of the Student Council I am forced to confess that I, too, learned a great deal. I have learned that my duty as President involved both resolution and patience. Possibly the most difficult thing to master was the ability to remain objective and aloof during controversy, to act the part of peacemaker and compromiser rather than revisionist. In this case, as in many others, my own growth of responsibility rose from the inheritance of the office that I held. The S.C.A. had a good year, as years go. There were times of dissension, but there were also times of unity. That unity has taken a firm place in BHS now, and it serves as the cornerstone upon which il other activities of this school may be built. That unity caused heights of victory in athletics, a new tightening of student-teacher bond, and a new understanding between classes. The preservation of that unity lies heavily on the shoulders of the Student Council. I sincerely hope that next year’s members will work as hard to maintain the spirit fostering that unity. Steve Judd President ACTIVITIES 51 OFFICERS 52 ACTIVITIES First Row: Mr. Nunley, Mrs. Riley, Mr. Arnold—advisors. Second Row: Cathy Maxey—treasurer, Larry Hoffman- vice president, Connie Deavers- secretary, Donna Crampton-chaplain. During the school year of 1968-1969 the Student Council supervised the class elections, sponsored Spirit Week, held two activity card dances, and wrote to Irwin High in North Carolina. Letters were received concerning student exchange days, but plans were never completed. KOREAN ORPHANS My Dear Sponsor How are you? I am very sorry for not having written to you for a long time. How have you been? I hope you are well and happy in the Lord. I am happy to say that I am getting along well. It is because of your love and warm support. I am having lots of fun with the other children. I will close here for now. 1 will look for your letter sometime. Good bye in the Lord. Yet it was a great season for the entire squad, which Coach Scott called one of his best ever. The Warriors shattered a team scoring record against Brunswick, then captured the Walkersville Invitational against seven other schools. They finished a strong second in the District Meet, finally capping a fine season by finishing fourth in the State Meet. Two Warriors, Meredith Fouche, and Greg Huntsberry, were gold medal winners in their events. The Warrior ’69 squad set five school records during the year.
