CHIEFTAIN 1966 BOONSBORO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BOONSBORO, MARYLAND FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK When the impact of the important responsibility of becoming editor of the Chieftain first came to my attention, I resolved that I would consider this an opportunity. This opportunity would make a lasting impression in Warrior Territory. Then, when years roll on as years are wont to do, somehow, efforts will not have been for naught. Old friends will revive old memories, relive precious events, and remember long-sought yet unfulfilled dreams with every perusal. I would like to extend to the Chieftain staff my profound appreciation for its invaluable help. I would also like to thank the Chieftain advisor, the faculty, the student body, and others who co-operated to the fullest extent. Without their combined efforts this venture would have been in vain. Now, I would like to present this edition of the 1966 Chieftain to you. May it be one worth remembering. FAY ANDERS — EDITOR - IN-CHIEF Sincerely, 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration 4-6 Faculty 7-14 Seniors 15-56 Juniors 57-64 Sophomores 65-72 Freshmen 73-80 Activities 81-108 Athletics 109-130 Senior Directory 131-140 Advertising 141-156 FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK America is built upon a dream. The cornerstone of the American Dream is, and must be, the school. Every person must find open to him the opportunity, through education, to draw upon the accumulated knowledge and experience of the past. In an age in which we begin with things unknown just a few years before, this becomes increasingly vital. And because the opportunities are so varied, it follows that the school must meet the needs of all types of interests and abilities, and not attempt to mold all to a common pattern. Neither race nor creed, wealth nor lack of it, should rise as a barrier to the fullest development of each life. To every generation should be given the opportunity to achieve that which will bring it happiness. The American Dream is not of the 'melting pot' in which all are cast in a common mold. It is a dream of a mosaic of many individual parts. It is our aim to develop this school so as to make the dream come true for all those who enter its doors. DR. J. a Christian home for Won-Hui and Ki Yun. The students show that they really care by their over-whelming generosity on Penny Days scheduled during the year. Lee Won-Hui was adopted in January 1963. After separation from his parents, Won-Hui was cared for by the deacon of his home church, until the deacon, being too poor to support him, brought him to the Hosanna Orphanage in Mason City, Korea, where he now lives with his sister, Lee Yang-Hui. 82 BAK KI-YUN Bak Ki-Yun joined our family in February 196S. Born on February 15, 1956, she has been living in the True Blue Christian Orphanage, Taegu City, Korea, since her mother disappeared in 1961. The ten year old girl, a member of the Holiness Church, is a second grader in the Myung Duk Primary School at Teagu City. Boonsboro HighSchool is but a speck in the Compassion Foundation, but to Won-Hui and Ki-Yun we are life itself. 83 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is only as effective as students allow it to be. This year's Council has been unusually effective because the students have brought their problems and suggestions before it for discussion. 84 BRENTON FORD-President Council projects have received overwhelming support throughout the year. The chorus was conducted by Gilbert Brungart, Director of Choral Activities, Colgate University, Hamilton, New York. The guest conductor was Dr. Howard Barlow, conductor and director of The Voice of Firestone. DELEGATE TO CONFERENCE ON ATOM Mr. Gregory Stottlemyer was selected as a delegate to the 1965 National Youth Conference on the Atom. This conference was sponsored by the Potomac Edison Company and was held in December at Chicago. The main purpose of the conference was to present to delegations from across the nation with a more accurate picture of the future use of the atom and of the future of science in general. 103 CHORUS Officers LEFT TO RIGHT — David Smith, Janet Rohrer, Mariana Ellis, Cynthia Butts, Donna Guyer, Edna Newcomer, Director—Mr. Alcorn, and Larry Renner. 104 MADRIGALS FRESHMEN 105 Drum Majors LEFT TO RIGHT — Galen Reeder, and Joe Rowland. Jim was also the leading rebounder on the squad. He was eighth in the league as a junior and this year he continued his high-scoring ways. This year the interest was high with twelve boys trying out for the team. Eight boys were chosen to participate on the team. They were: Jeff Stouffer, David Churchey, Lester Grimm, Steve Mullendore, Greg Smilski, Wayne Easton, and Bill Craig. Despite the record of games lost and won, one can see that golf is on the rise at Boonsboro and will continue to rise in the future. 122 OUTSTANDING 1966 PLAYERS The spotlight must be put on sophomore Jeff Yingling. After having a rough beginning, he overcame all difficulties and finished the season with sensational rounds of seventy-two and seventy-three. Jeff Stouffer and David Churchey came through with many fine rounds during the season. But, perhaps the biggest surprise was the playing of senior Lester Grimm. He over came early season difficulties and progressed rapidly and finished the season with a fine round of eighty-one. JEFF YINGLING 123 JEFF STOUFFER DAVID CHURCHEY BASEBALL Coach Keyser stated before the baseball season began that this would be a rebuilding year. The warriors did not have a winning season but many of their games were lost by only a few runs. The warriors were hit by rain in the early part of the season and had as much as a week and a half lay-off from any baseball activity. The team had to start all over again when the rains stopped and played rather strong baseball. In all, the scores were not indicative of the game, for the warriors had one of the most potent hitting teams in the history of the school and averaged between five and six runs for each game. 124 GARY KAETZEL JAMES HAUPT SAMUEL SMITH RONALD McGOLERICK TRACK The 1965-66 Warrior track squad had excellent showings all season long. Highlighting the thinclads efforts was the Walkersville Invitational in which Boonsboro outclassed a field of eight schools to capture the championship trophy. Led by co-captains Brenton Ford and Dickie Toms, the Warriors had a fine showing in the District Meet, placing second to powerful Fort Hill. 126 BRENTON FORD STEPHEN HUTZELL PERRY YOUNGER 127 DAVID LEWIS RICHARD TOMS GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 128 LEFT TO RIGHT — Co-Captain—Carolyn Albert, Coach Crawford, and Co-Captain— Sandra Gonzalez.
