T m-LIGHTER h Sesua'i GlaAA. off 1955 BOONSBORO HIGH SCHOOL BOONSBORO, MARYLAND nncipai s ord OP 1G ear DOUGLAS M. BIVENS Principal It is a privilege and a pleasure to use the 1955 issue of THE HI-LIGHTER to communicate directly with the faculty, school employees, students and citizens of the community. This pictorial report is especially designated to interpret the year’s record of the overall educational program and services of Boonsboro High School, and the wide range of faculty and student interests and activities. In pictorial, graphic and verbal form with an attractive layout, it serves as a documentary of the highlights of the current academic year to show the readers how Boonsboro High School people live, think and act. The report relates directly to the present schooling, contemporary environment and experiences and future work and careers of our young men and women. In the next pages of this student publication, you will note descriptive sketches; you will see illustrations of the personalities and feature events which directly contributed to the improvement and advancement of the educational enterprise and community culture and which had a desirable Influence on the continued growth and development of teen-agers and professional staff members during the current academic year. Indeed, this has been a busy and fruitful year! I point with pride and appreciation to the time, energy, thoi ght, wholehearted cooperation, earnest support and unfailing loyalty which my colleagues readily exercised in the helpful guidance, training and education of our young men and women. 2 Douglas M. The final tally was 1 6 wins and 2 losses, one of the best records our school has ever had. We think our boys deserve a pat on the back for their fine sportsmanship and skillful play, and, last but not least — the Class B County Championship. SOCCER — “Kick That Ball” Our soccer team furnished plenty of thrilling games for their spectators. They put up a good fight throughout the season, one that they can all be proud of. 16 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL — “Get That Rebound” We are all satisfied with the fine progress our girls made this year in basketball. They came out second in the Washington County League, a record to be proud of. FIELDBALL — “Play Ball” If success can be measured by sportsmanship, our girls deserve a lot of credit. The girls gave us many exciting games throughout the past season, and we wish them luck in the coming season. 17 CHEERLEADERS — “H-o-H-o-H-o-t, D-o-D-o-D-o-g, Hot Dog” The work being done by this group of girls is an inspiration for the team as well as the spectators. The clever cheers have encouraged many a victory. MIXED OCTET — “Melody Makers” A new organization in our school, the octet furnished wonderful music for the Christmas program. It is made up of selected voices of both boys and girls. 18 V PATROL — “Just the Facts, Nothin’ but the Facts” One of the most helpful organizations in our school is the Safety Patrol. They are responsible for the safety and welfare of our students going to and from school. STUDENT COUNCIL — “Next Case” We can be quite proud of our student governing body. Many of the school regulations have originated in this group, which also sponsors many student activities. 19 STAR STAFF — “Extra, Extra, Read All About It” If anyone deserves a medal it is surely the Star Staff of the school paper. They are doing a fine job of reporting, editing, proofreading, and meeting the deadlines. VISUAL AIDS — “Lights! Camera! Action!” This committee renders a great service to all our teachers and students, by showing films for entertainment as well as for their educational value. 20 FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA — “Readin’, ‘Ritin’, ‘Rithmetic” One of the largest and most outstanding clubs in our school is the F.T.A. This organization was formed in 1951 to further understanding of the teaching profession. Their activities are numerous, and one of the most outstanding is practice teaching in the classroom. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA — “The Florence Nightengales” Our newest organization is the F.N.A. During their first year, much has been accomplished. 21 SENIOR FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA — “Make Hay while the Sun Shines” These boys are being trained for their future vocation in farming and agriculture. They gain practical knowledge by working on the school farm. JUNIOR FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA — “Which Came First, the Chicken or The Egg” The junior high school boys who are interested in preparing for their futures in farming make up this organization. 22 VOCATIONAL FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA — “Rattle Those Pots and Pans” These girls are furthering their knowledge in the important field of homemaking and home management. In the practice house they are able to gain this actual experience. The General F.H.A. girls are preparing for their future careers in homemaking. They become acquainted with the principles of this course so they can put them into practice immediately. GENERAL FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA — “Grab Your Needles and Thread” 23 SENIOR GLEE CLUB—“B-Sharp, B-Natural, but Never B-Flat” The Senior Glee Club is an organization that has provided good music for not only the school, but for the public also. We are sure that all its members have thoroughly enjoyed singing in such a fine group. JUNIOR GLEE CLUB — “Sing Along” This large group of junior high students contributes a great deal to school entertainment both in assemblies and other school programs. 24 THE HI-LIGHTER STAFF Faculty Sponsors — Alfred P. Pictures of the following seniors do not appear: ROBERT ROSENBERRY NELSON HAUPT woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooocsoooo: 64 p.S.—The 1954-’55 Hi-Lighter would not be complete without mentioning the improvements made to our school plant during the past year: a new agriculture building has been added, th? school has been rewired, an intricate new bell system has been installed, and our gymnasium-auditorium has been renovated. The pictures on the page to the left show this renovation in process. The large picture above shows the finished product with the new stage curtain which our “Faculty Frolics” helped to purchase. A few shots from our “Frolics” are shown below. We are sure that, with our forward-looking principal and our loyal faculty and student body, BHS will constantly move ahead in the years to come. 65 ALTCGC4PHS 67 THE HAGERSTOWN LUMBER COMPANY DEPARTMENT STORE FOR BUILDERS Hagerstown, Md.
