The A team has won 23 of 34 games, and the B team has won 10 of 11. These teams haye faced some strong competition throughout the year and have shown some good ball playing. Looking back through the season we find the Tigers winning five games before losing one to the Florence State Teachers College by a narrow margin of three points. The Tigers kept the lead until the final minute when Florence made two field goals to give them a three point lead. The Tigers won five more games before losing to the Ole Miss Freshmen. The final score of the game was 66-55. This was a good game for the spectators as both teams were in the lead several times during the game. During the Christmas Holidays the Tigers took on the Sunflower junior College for the four game series. The first game was played in the Booneville Gym with the Tigers being victorious with a score of 48-44. Stanford led the Tigers scoring with 17 points, Davis and Garrett got 11 each, Prestage with 10, Bud Davis 4, Ivy 3, and Smith Z.. The second game was played in the Corinth Gym with the home team again win- ning, this time by only one point. Prestage made a field goal in the final three seconds to give us the one point lead. Prestage was high with 15 points. The third game was played in Belmont, again the Tigers won with a score of 56-57. Garrett led the scor- ing with 21 points. The final game, the only one Sunflower won, was played in Baldwyn. The final score being 53-46. The Tigers-later invaded the Rebel territory to defeat the Rebels by a score of 54.49. This was considered one of the best games of the year. Prestage led the scoring with 26 points. All during the season the teams have played some excellent ball and have shown their skill with ball handling and shooting. The boys have played a very good season thus far and we certainly wish them luck as they go into the tournament. The boys will have an equal chance of winning the state championship and we believe they can do it. Let's go Tigers! l Donald Scott-guard Richard Arnold-eguard Walter johnson-forward Smithgf''Mechie ---Has played an outstanding season as a guard. Regardless of the field of work you undertake, if you strive after it as hard as you have with the team you have been a part of, you will be a sulgcess. Boyd Hill forward :m lareddm Eaton-forward Jeannette Clarkfforward Marie Searcy forward January 8, 1949, arrived at last and at 7:00 p.m. The NEMJC Tigerettes were ready for action. Excitement was running high in the Booneville gym because this was their first encounter and their opponents, the Hinds sextet, were known to be a snappy outfit on the hardwood. Hinds took an early lead which was never curbed. Coach Arnold made plenty of substitutions throughout, and there was a new spark in the play when Searcy changed from guard to forward at the second half. The halftime score was 27-17, but in the third quarter a slight gain advanced when Hinds tallied for 15 points with the Tigerettes collecting 18. This slight advance was never made strong enough because that was the nearest we ever came to tying those sharp shooters. Thompson sank 6 goals from afar in the last period, and now it was evident that our girls were outclassed--if not on the perfection of their plays, certainly on height. The final score registered a 59-46 win for the opponents. Searcy, a Belnont-star player, was top performer for Northeast with 17 points, closely followed by Clark who got 14 points. Outstanding for Hinds were Thompson and Harrison who chalked up 24 and 22 points. On january 10th Booneville was host to Northwest jr. College of Senatobia. The NEMjC sextet were all out for victory and Northwest was unable to stop their onslaught. Couble guarding the spot proved more effective than in the previous try. Hamilton, guard, who played with Scooba last year, saw plenty of action on the hardwood. Another of our players having previous experience playing college basketball is Meeks QSun- flowerj. Halftime score was 29-li, and the Northeast girls kept going strong until the final whistle blew and victory was theirs 57-45. Searcy was high scorer for the Tigerettes with 20 points and was tied for honors by jones of Northwest. Tuesday january 18, Coach Arnold, the basketball boys and girls left on the college bus for a tour. Wlmile gone the NEMJC girls met Northwest, Sunflower, Hinds, and Goodman and were victors over Sunflower and Goodman. Eight days previously Northeast had blasted Senatobia by a safe margin of l-i points. Then on their home court they defeated our lassies by 9 points. Something went wrong somewhere. Ifredda Eaton, forward from Tishimingo, was unable to make the trip, but Weeks, a guard from Wlieeler just added to the team, did go along. X ? Nt ' is ,il ,... 1 I ? 5 ' - 1 'E A61- ,QL gif . Billy Ward , Center Ralph Stutts Back Following an open date the Blue Devils played Houston, a member of the Little Ten, and racked up their third victory to their expense by a 26-13 score. Climaxing an 80-yard drive, Stutts plunged 2 yards for the first tally. Late in the second period, Lind- sey, from the 15, hit Barron with a pass for the second score. Lindsey took the second half kick-of 95 yards to paydirt. Trailing 19-0 the hilltoppers scored on a 30 yard run but Muse came right back to score on an end sweep from the 15 yard line. In the closing minutes Houston completed a short touchdown pass which made the final score 26-13. Coach Box was well pleased with defense work of Captain Billy Ward, Jarvis and Bonds. R. I. In practice the week before the game the team lost the service of Fulghum, regular guard, because of a broken arm. The first score was set up by Jarvis who took a pass from Lindsey on a play which covered 65 yards to Bulldogs 15. Two plays later Milton Ward crossed the double strip on a layout pass. Stutts made it 7 with a line plunge. Both teams drove up and down the field, neither being able to score until late in the fourth period when Aberdeen, on a long drive scored and booted the extra point to make the score 7-7. With only four minutes remaining Lindsey threw a long layout pass to Jarvis who went 50 yards to paydirt. The pass for the extra point failed and the game ended with the mighty Blue Devils out in front 13-7. Wales, regular guard was playing a brilliant game until he received injury that put him out for the rest of the season. Captain Billy Ward and Barron played exceptionally well. 1 , -liyaaz-.wafr M gg ' - eee t ..'. . - ' i w ,f . J Jr' ' - ,.g. The powerful Blue Devils attained the goal that every team dreams of. An undefeated season. They started the season with unknown quality and received little recognition but as each game passed the eleven grew stronger. By the end of the season they were the only undefeated and one of the best teams in this section. The Booneville Blue Devils under the able coaching of P. Box had the best basketball teams in many years. The boys have won 24 out of 29 games and the girls have only been beat 3 times out of 29. The boys defeated Pisgah, Thrasher and New Site and the girls won over Wheeler, Pisgah and Marrietta to win the county tournament. Both teams were runner-up in the Wheeler invitational tournament. The Blue Devils have beat some of the best teams in this section of the state. The state playoff is about to start and everybody predicts that the boys and girls both will go a long way down the road to the State Championship. '15 fs -,. Q . f 1 w + , .gf Q33 v 59 , RQ fm ., L.
