Class H istory It is now 1988, twenty-five years since we graduated from Washington High. Dr. Martha Hopkins and Miss Lois Mimms, who are both successfully holding positions as head of the Mathematical Department at Howard University and President of Winston-Salem Teacher's College, respectively, are reminiscing over the past, and their former classmates come to them in retrospect starting from their freshman year in Washington High School. Here are the results. In 1959 we entered Washington High as frightened, but eager freshmen. Having completed the course of study for elementary school, we were anxious to start high school under the guidance of Mr. Quick, Mr. Crawford, Mr. Powell, and Mr. Whitsett, our homeroom advisors. We were introduced to the social life at Washington High immediately with the freshman social. Many of us joined various clubs and participated in other activities. The following fall, 1960, we re-entered high school as sophomores with Mrs. Morrison, Mr. Pettit, and Mrs. Johnson as our homeroom advisors. That year the sophomore class came in extremely well in the rally, with Mrs. Johnson winning first place and Mrs. Morrison winning fourth place. Our homecom- ing king and queen were Edgar Johnson and Nannie Foster, with Yvonne Milliner as attendant to the queen. That year many of our boys made the football, basketball, and baseball teams. Another year rolled by and we were juniors, with advisors, Mr. Kimbrough, Mr. Roberts, and Mrs. Neely. That year the junior class didn't perform as well as the previous year during the athletic rally. However, Mrs. Nee1y's class did win fourth place. The junior class came in strong on Student Council Election Day, with Ernestine Martin winning the position of Vice-President. The boys gave a good ac- count of themselves in athletics that year, especially in basketball, starring Herman Thomas. We began our senior year with Mrs. McRae and Mr. Roberts, our homeroom advisors, always remind- ing us to build our personality on a solid foundation. Dr. Ernestine Martin, who now resides as Chief-of- Staff of Duke Hospital, Durham, N.C., was elected president of our joint senior class. Other leaders in our senior class were Daniel Oliphant, owner and manager of Oliphant's Funeral Home, Mary Robinson, Geraldean Galloway and Brenda Galloway, each a private secretary in large business firms, Addie Bass, who teaches American music in Europe and Dr. Willa M. Abbott, the editor-in-chief of our annual, now President of the Federation of the college of Physicians. Yes, we've come a long way since those days at Washington High. We have reached fame in science, entertainment and literature. Of course, there are others who haven't done as well but there are always those who are slower in progress than others. To the slow ones we wish more speed and success and to the others we congratulate them on their success. To our former teachers, what can we say? No amount of gratitude could possibly repay them for the efforts and interests they have shown. All we can do now is say a mere Thank you for a job well done. The poll is thus completed. You have the results. The only advice we offer to rising seniors at the Washington High School is always Start in time to finish. Never wait until the last minute to do some- thing that you know must be done. CLASS OF 1963 HISTORIANS: Martha Hopkins Lois Mimms
