BONNERS FERRY HIGH SCHOOL zkemry Come I This year authors and poets were again given a chance to exhibit their compositions in a contest sponsored by the Annual Staff. We extend our thanks to the English Depart- ment for efficiently preparing and collecting the material. judging was based on originality, appeal, and composition. The winners and prizes are as follows: first. Bill Spurgeon, three dollars, second, Donna Lannigan, two dollars, and third, Marilyn Sargent, one dollar. First Place Tl-IE LORD DECIDED ln spite of the threat of a storm it was a great day in the life of Sheriil Jack Williams. Today he was going to be married to the pret- tiest girl in Crossport. He was so happy that he even forgot about Black jack Kreech. Kreech was an outlaw and had once been the head of a band of rustlers. That was before Sheriff Williams and his posse caught them. Kreech had escaped, but he swore he would get the Sheriff for that. A They hadn't met yet but when they did it would mean only one thing. The straightest shot would live. Today XVilliams was in the saloon having a drink with the boys before he got hitched and settled down. The noisy crowd was suddenly stilled when the batwing doors were thrown open to admit a man who seemed to be in a hurry. lie looked over the crowd until he saw jack. Soineone's looking for you, Sheriff. Says his name is Kreechf' .lack knew that he had no choice. It was fight or leave the country. lle liked Crossport. The street was deserted except for the two men, hands on guns, walking slowly towards each other. Everything was quiet except for the rumble of thunder and the crash of light- ning. The storm was coming ever closer. Then a thing happened that people talked about for years. A bolt of lightning hit the ground at Black Jack's feet causing every shell on his belt and in his gun to explode. That afternoon the Sheriff, unharmed but still shaken, appeared before the preacher with his young bride-to-be, while on Boothill in a fresh mound, was a headboard. On it was burned: BLACK JACK KREECH 18- to 1860 THE LORD DECIDED -By Bill Spurgeon. Second Place AS YOU LOOK, BEHOLD . . . Reaching out before you, you cannot touch, But you can feel and hear it: That which rushes and swirls on and on. You look and cannot behold but you are near it. XYhat is that which races on leaving behind all things and goes rushing through the sky? That thing that can alone be heard and felt, but cannot be touched or seen by the eye? Is it death, whose dark and somber waves rush on to lind another victim to devour? Or is it life that brings joys and happy blessings leaving far behind the dying hour? As you look behold, this thing may be some- thing ' God has made and caused to descend. lt is not death nor the happy songs of life, it is only the rushing of the wind. -By Donna Lannigan.
