He is the person to whom the annual stff has chosen to dedicate this annual. Tom Cohle was horn Illarch 2, 1890, in Cory, Indiana. and remained in this peaceful town all through grade school and high school. llis education continued to the extent of attending the Indiana State Teachers College, the Lewiston State Normal, and the University of Idaho at Illoscow. After teaching in the puhlic schools of Indiana he came to Southern Idaho in ISII5. 'l'he next two years were spent as principal of the school at Alexander, hefore coming to Northern Idaho. Ile has heen very active in education ever since his arrival in the North. XVhen XYorld XYar I came along he took time ol? to serve his country. During World War ll he was employed hy the government. liefore traveling to the ahundant liootenai Valley he was superintendent of Schools of Kootelllll. Idilllo. Since coming to llonners lferry he has heen principal of the North Side Grade School and County Superintendent of I'uhlic Schools. For the last four years Mr. Cohle has heen an instructor in the Ilonners Iferry lligh School, teaching Glohal Geography, 'Iunior and Senior lland, Chorus. and General Mathematics. Ile was married May l5, ISHS! to Iflla Nelson at Soda Springs, Idaho. Ilis three children are Mary Iidith llllrs. Percy Iiurnellj, Keith N., and joan. A more recent addition to the family is. Claudia Ruth, a grandchild. VVe were 115 freshmen in number, the largest class in the history of Bonners Ferry High School. NVith Bud johnson, president, Joan Coble, vice-presidentg Roy Virak. secretary, Pauline Kelson, treasurerg Bob Pate, forum repre- sentative, and Miss Ferol Hunter tMrs. Don Blackburnj, sponsor, we had a successful freshman year. XVe sponsored two dances. a show, and a play Not Quite Such a Goose. Our class really made history our frosh year. Not only. were we the largest freshman class to enter! the doors of B. F. H. S. but also were the first'- underclassmen to sponsor a play. The freshmen year was concluded with a class picnic at INlonk's lake. SOP! IOMORES: After a summer to recuperate from the strain of being green ?? frosh, we trouped back to school in the fall of '-15 prepared for a very busy year. XVe started by electing a good crew of officers: Roy Virak, presidentg Bob Spald- ing. vice-presidentg Bob Nixon, secretaryg Gloria llelioer, treasurer, Lee Morse, sergeant- at-armsg .Ioan Coble, forum representative, and Bliss Kay Birchmeier. sponsor. XYe contributed to the school activities for the year by sponsoring a masquerade dance on l-lallowe'en and a Bobby Sox dance after the Sandpoint-Bonners Ferry game early in Feb- ruary. XN'e ended our second year at high school by having our class picnic at Herman Lake with the juniors. -IUNIURS: In the fall of '46 the juniors marched into the school as full-Hedged upper classmen. There were ninety-one members in the class and they elected the following officers: Nial VVor- sham, president, Lee Morse, vice-presidentg Bob Nixon, secretaryg Robert Spalding, treas- urerg Roy Virak, forum representative. Dr. Stauffacher was appointed our sponsor until 26 he left to fill a position at Medical Lake, Washington. His successor, Mr. Adams, was then appointed to complete the term. Being exceedingly ambitious Juniors, we got right into the swing of things by sponsoring a Hard Time dance. A record crowd of one hundred and fifteen students attended and everyone had a good time. Of course, we think the rings chosen by our class are the nicest. They have a gold crest on a background of white and rose gold. Un each side of the crest the numerals 19-L8 were engraved. A flag in the middle had a black B on it. They were ordered in November and ar- rived early in March. The junior Prom on April IZ, was one of the most outstanding social events of the year. The gym was decorated with various shades of purple carrying out the theme Deep Purple. The high school dance band from Kellogg furnished the music. For the second time our class picnic was held at Herman Lake. Several faculty members and the Sophomore Class accompanied us. SENIURS: .Xfter what seemed a long time, we strutted into B. F. ll. S., mighty Seniors. Realizing a big year was ahead of us. we elected a very capable crew of officers. Roy Yirak, presidentg Don Lindsay, vice-president, Phyllis Neu- mayer, secretary-treasurerg Pete Stafford, for- um representative. Floyd Sage was appointed our sponsor. Being a very original class we sponsored a Sadie Hawkins day race at the last football game of the year, which was also Homecoming. After a great deal of preparation, our Senior Ball was held December 13. The gym was trans- formed into a NVinter VVonderland, with a false seiling of cedar boughs, a white sleigh, and silvered trees. Each class nominated two fresh- man girls queen candidates, and Elaine Hyland was elected Snow Queen to reign over the ball. Several meetings were held to decide our class motto, color, and flower. Three TKO's were chalked up by the Badgers. Bonners traveled to Wallace for their first trip on February 12. Wallace took the matches with three wins, one draw and two losses. The Badgers drove to Priest River on Feb- ruary 17 only to lose another away from home. The Badgers won one, lost three and drew one. The Rathdrum Panthers won from Bon- ners 3-2 on Saturday, February 21 in a five match card at Rathdrum. The Badger mittmen lost a close card at Kellogg on February 28, 5-4 with one draw. Although we lost, many considered it the best bout of the season. Un Monday, March 8, Wallace journeyed here and the Badgers again hit a winning streak. The Badgers won 4-2. The grade school boxers drew with Troy 2-2 with one draw. Continuing their wins the Badgers beat St. Maries at St. Maries. The Badgers won 3-1 with one draw. This match was the last one before the tournament. After the tournament the Badgers journeyed to Troy. Only four fights were made with Bonners winning them all by decisions. On the 18, 19 and 20 of March the panhandle boxing tournament was again held in Bonners. The Badgers fought their way to a clean cut victory in which forty-five points were earned and five championships garnered. All the Bonners mittmen, except Gene Carl- son, who suffered a cut eye the first night, placed in the top three positions in their weights. The theme was Winter VVonderland and it was very attractively decorated with cedar boughs, trees and a false sleigh front for the orchestra. Then came the Junior Prom which was effec- tively and beautifully decorated to the theme of Springtime in the Rockies. The student body elected Bob Spalding and Sally Servoss as King and Queen for the evening. This dance was held in the gym on April 2. On May 1 came the annual May Festival sponsored by the Girls Club. Before the dance Isobel Hyland, the May Queen, was crowned and a program consisting of many dif- ferent dances and ending in the winding of the Maypole was presented. A meeting was held in the middle of April to pick out a place for the Senior Sneak. Var- ious ideas were brought up, and the place was finally chosen and the date was set. Then came the two big events of the year, Graduation and Baccalaureate. On the evening of May 16, solemn and dignified seniors marched down the aisles for the Baccalaureate service. Two men were walking down a New York street. They chatted together - one man turned off into. an alley where he lived in a desolate, cold, foodless house. The other man walked on - as if in deep thought. He was on his way to the docks. There he leaned against a timber - a fog horn exhailed its gloom on the man's thoughts. The deep lines in his face deepened with anxious worry - Oh, if only l had more money or food so I could lend more and not hurt myself and my inner parts. The fog began to sullenly rise and disappear. The sun broke through here and there, hesitat- ingly at first, then it burst through to show its full glory. The lines of anxiety changed some now, only his innerself, which made him think even more of his friend - trying desperately to make something that could be sold from his rapidly decreasing supplies - made him sad. lf people would support me as they thrust their aid to the Communist parties. Then my friend would no longer need to worry about his diminishing materials. Those coal mines, he has a large share in, could be brought back to full production along with his many other investments. Then no one would be cold or hungry. His many other friends could work and make liveable wages.
