Z7 foffll CVM 0196 Cn the tenth of September l942 the run way of Bomtas atrdrome was crowded wtth gay young gtrls a d merry boys about to start on a great ad venture -la tng prevtously taken thetr bastc ratntng tn such aeronactttcal schools as San Dtmas La Verne Hetghts and La Verne they were eagerly vvatttng to board the good o d transport Bomta Unton rltgh Schoc AT las the moment of departure had come ard the shtp was actually flytng away as they wax ed go ct bye those or- the ground Vtlhen the shtp was well under way they watched 'te 'cers and crew for awhtle and hert turned to look out tnto the blue sky surround ng them BPO t see tn what dtrectton they were traveltng As the new crew was pu7zled over the 'vast amount of atr space the ptlot came up to them and explatnect that the atr was dtvtded tnto four d fferent spheres th Freshman Sphere the Sopho 'nore Sphere the luntor Sphere and the Sentor Sphere l-le also told them hat the plane made many stops for refueltng and repatrs somettmes stopptng for as long as hree months The prlot then showed them through the plane and helped them to get started on he routtne of thetr new uves Hrs kmdly warntngs about Examtnatton Storms Tardtness Fogs and Athlettc Clouds and about that dread dsea e so prevalent at ftrst Fre lsmantts threv them rnto a flurrx f terror Thts last dtsease ts recogntzed by an oddly consptctous green color and detested by vtcttms and offtoers ahke H advtsed them that the best preventatne for thts horrrd arlment was a stnct conformance to the careful d19lDfGSCI'1bGCl by the planes offtcers and a careful obedtence t the rules of the shtp l-le also recommended the observance of a humble sptrtt durmq the Crocsmq Of Freshman Sphere Thfs satd he greatly lessens the danger of severe attacks of Freshman tts and tn many cases proves an absolute pre Jentattve To all thts they l1stened wtth grave and none too cheerful confrrmatton The boys and gtrls soon became accustomed to the pla te and the new ltfe they were leadmg The usual tnttmacy whtch sprtngs up among those on an atr ntp soon mad them all fast frtends Before lO1'1Q they SGW that they needed leaders In thetr new ltfe to help tn thetr affatrs and to cooper ate wrth the plane s offtcers They selected ftve of thetr members t perform these duttes for them and they chose four of the shtp s offtcers to act as thetr spectal adx tsers and helpers throughout thetr e'1t1re fhght aboard the plane All the warntngs and prevtous advtce were taken to heart by the crew and under the leader shtp of thetr new offtcers they met dtfferent a1r currents and cltmbed above them tnto the boundanes of the Sophomore Sphere As they ascended tnto Sophomore Sphere they gatned presttge Several of thetr Squadron began to show athlettc and craft ab1l1ty whtle others were outstandtng tn mustc They presented a play and several sktts and began to have the feeltng of berng an tmportant part of thts great plane less Examtnatron Storms became tncreastnglv evere Twtce they had engtne trouble and some of the poor crew parachuted tn franttc despatr They made a sutctde landrng 1nto the Forests of Farlure berng blown by the wtnd of Class Average Wtth an eye out for further casualttes those left ptcked therr pertlous way through dangerous currersts of atr calms and trade wtnds And then before they fully real zed tt they were cltnsbrng tnto the htgh altltudes of luntor Sphere The wtncls of thts htrd Sphere proved on the whole very serene and pleasant A few more luckless vtcttms were lost but havtng pretty well acgutred the feelrng of thetr Heads tn the Clouds most of them ptloted w1th uncanny ab1l1ty through storms fogs and dark nrghts Many of the passengers became qutte clever at bltnd flytng Less gtfted members of the crew often sat wtth bated breath whtle the davzlmg forcefulness of some wtndy perso altttes blew aslde the pertlous storms and made all clear flytng agatn On the whole hrs part of he fltght was charactertzed by oyful sptnts and favorable wmds and so they flew mernly on From a lower altttude Sentor Sphere had long appeared to them to be a vast stretch of atr f rare and remarkable beauty Even tn Freshman Sphere they had often peered through the strong plane s glasses strtvtng to get a peep at that lovely and far off goal As they neared thts Sphere they found 1t even more lovely than they had anttctpated yet a gltmmertng beacon ltght of sadness lay ltke a fog over 1t Thts beacon the ptlot satd was but a reftectton of two ltghts The pale beacon ltght shone from the three Spheres rust chartered the rosy 'vaguely allurtng haze farthest away was reflected from the vast and dtsrupted Sphere of Ltfe that stretched far beyond Semor Sphere The pale beacon ltght was called Regret the rosy beacon lrght Hope lrle sa1d a dreadful storm that netther he nor any other could have foreseen was ust now rntrodu mg ttself nto thts vast Sphere and made thetr a nval upon tt Just at thts ttrre pecultarly drfft .tlt and dangerous Thts storrr was called Depresston l-le urged that they take courage as they were tor the rost part a brave hearted level headed crew that could well be trusted to navtgate ever tnts restless and upset Sphere And tn truth they seensed to tusttfy hrs expectatt ns for thetr hope was not shaken by thts unpredt ted task before them most of them ac epted tt as a thrtlltng challenge and nent at thetr ltfe tn Sentor Sphere mth more vtg r and dtltgen e than they had prevtously shown As they le Jeled off they found Sentor Sphere more deltghtfu than they had expected Of course there was rruch hard work to be done At trrnes they seerned to oe enctrcled tn the great atr pockets of some fterce Examtnatton Storm yet tn sptte of the many trtals they found ttme for play and SQGWGQ to draw rn re pleasure from the fltght than ever before Durrng thts last year thetr frtendshtps have grown even loser and as they land at Com mencement Fteld and look up tnto the Sphere of Ltfe they feel prepared to wtthstand the strongest wtnds that tt can blow at them for they feel that thetr Htgh School fltght has Deen one of the most successful ever expertenced by a group of flyers .
