SIIPHIIMIIIII lZlASS UHICIRS We sophomores started this school year, 1953-54, with 18 members. Three of these, Audrey and Arthur Kahler and Roger Stroh, came from Burke. Janice I-Iaase dropped out of school after the first semester, leaving 17 members. Our sponsor was Mr. John Rathbun. We had our first class meeting a few weeks after school started. The following were elected: Carol Peppel - President, Jim Bailey - Vice President, and Reta Stroh - Secretary and Treasurer. Our Student Council representatives were Audrey Kahler and Bob Carsten. John Smith, Roger Stroh, and Arthur Kahler lettered in basketbgll. Arthur Kahler and Jim Bailey lettered in foot- ball. Larry Spitzenberger, base soloist, received an excell- ent rating at the Kimball contest. Eight of the nine girls sang in the glee club. Kathleen Spitzenberger won the oratorical contest in declam for the second year. She received an excellent rating at the district contest. Carol Peppel and Reta Stroh were chosen as B team cheerleaders. - Audrey Kahler and Lenard Zeisler were king and queen candidates. Bob Carsten took part in the senior class play and Art- hur Kahler and Roger Stroh in the junior class play. Lenard Zeisler Roger Stroh

FRESHMA MASS IIHIIIERS l s The new school year of 1953 started with Z0 freshman, eight coming from St. Charles, one from Herrick and the re- maining eleven irom Bonesteel., Early in the year Cleveland High Pine from St. Charles dropped out and Lorna Foster en- tered. The class was initiated Sept. 16th by the seniors. Mr. Backus was the class sponsor. The class officers were- President, Tom Bruceg Vice President, Carole Jonesg and Secretary-Treasure, Gary Hoffman. The dues were fifty cents a semester. Ruby Pfaff and Carole .Ions were chosen as B team cheerleaders from the freshman class. Eight girls participated in girls athletics. Three girls sang in the glee club. The students who entered Declam were Margaret Boettcher, Tom Bruce, Virgil Charging Hawk, Carole Jensen, Frances LaClaire, Jerald Schochenmaier, Lou Ann Wern- ke, and Darrell Young., Tom Bruce won second place in the local contest and second place in the hickory stick contest. Ray Vaughn and Virgil Charging Hawk were the lettermen in basketball and Ray also lettered in football. The king and queen candidates were Carole .Ions and Ray Vau- ghn.
