, mmf sq.. f CAPTAIN CHARLES K. R UIZ USN Captain Charles K. Ruiz was born in Rock Island, Illinois, on July 11, 1921. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign on June 19, 1942. He served in the heavy cruiser USS VINCENNES KCA-405 after graduation and during the Guadalcanal invasion. He, was on the bridge of VINCENNES when she was- sunk by Japanese naval gunfire during the night surface action at the First Battle of Savo Island on August 9, 1942. Captain Ruiz then transferred to submarine duty. He earnedthe Silver Star Medal for his part in the sinking of three enemy ships anddamaging two others. Captain Ruiz is qualified for com- mand of submarines. . A Q h Captain Ruiz next' completed flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator on June 11, 1946. He commanded Attack Squadron SEVENTY-TWO, the Navy's first A4 squadron. While in command of Attack Squadron SEVENTY-TWO he deployed to the Mediterranean in the attack car- rier USS RANDOLPH QCVA-153 and the squadron helped provide air cover to the U. S. Marines during the Lebanon landings in 1958. I A ' He was assigned to the commissioning detail of the attack carrier USS CONSTELLATION ECVA-645 in 1960 and served as her first Executive Officer until 1962 when he was P1'0m0ted to aptain. I Captain Ruiz served as Commanding Officer of the ammunition ship USS DIAMOND HEAD KAE-191 from June 1964 until August 1965. Before assuming command of BON HOMME RICHARD on March 8, 1967 Captain Ruiz attended the Advanced Management Program at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University. Captain Ruiz was relieved on February 25, 1968 as commanding officer and is now stationed at Offut Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebraska. He is married to the former Judith Arbogust. They have one son, Richard, age 20.

Dankworth, commanding officer of the attack carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD KCVA-313 was born in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania on August 21, 1922. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commis sioned an Ensign on June 9, 1943. ' After graduation, he served on the destroyer USS RENSHAW CDD 4997 as Torpedo Officer and Gunnery Officer dur- ing amphibious landing support operations in the Northern Solomons, Marianas and Philippine campaigns. After placing Renshaw in reserve status, he was ordered to USS WILLIAM R. RUSH where he served as Gunnery Officer and Execu- tive Officer. Captain Dankworth next completed flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator October 10, 1948. Captain Dankworth was ordered to Air Anti-Submarine Squadron THIRTY-SEVEN where he served as Operations and Executive Officer during shore based training and deployment to the Far East on anti-submarine warfare carrier USS PRINCETON KCVS-373. Following this squadron duty he was assigned to the staff of Commander Naval Air Forces, Pacific, as Officer Assignment Officer. Selected for test pilot training, he attended the Naval Test Pilot School and graduated in February 1957. He was assigned to the Carrier Suitability Branch of the Flight Test Division, Naval Air Test Center as a project officer, termi- nating his tour as head of the Carrier Suitability Branch. During this period he participated in carrier suitability tests with F8U, F4D, F11F airplanes and in the development of the poor man's mirror. He next commanded Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED FORTY-TWO, flying FSB Crusaders. The Squadron was the day fighter representative of Commander Naval Force, Pacific, at the last Naval Weapons Meet. Squadron command was followed by command of Carrier Air Wing TWENTY-ONE, which deployed to the Western Pacific, on the attack carrier USS HANCOCK CCVA-195 in February 1962. From July 1962 until June 1964 Captain Dankworth was assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel as Aviation Com- mander Assignment Officer. During this period, in September 1963, he was promoted to Captain. Captain Dankworth served as commanding officer of the dock landing ship USS PLYMOUTH ROCK QLSD-295 from June 1964 until August 1965 and participated in Exercise Steel Pike, a major landing exercise of one Marine Division at Huelba, Spain. The ship was also a part of the Caribbean Amphibious Ready Group from January to May of 1965. After detachment in August, he attended the National War College in Washington, D.C. Q Prior to joining BON HOMME RICHARD, Captain Dankworth served as Director, Analysis and Reports Directorate with Joint Task Force TWO, a low altitude testing organization responsible to the Joint Chiefs of Staff Additionally he was CARDS Project Officer h' h ' l d ' w ic 1nvo ve the prototype development and testing of an on board system for recording combat data in tactical aircraft. Captain Dankworth holds the Legion of Merit, American Defense Medal American Campaign Medal Asiatic Pacific Campaign Med l ' h I a wit one Silver Star and two Bronze Stars, World War II'Victory Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occulpiatloln Service Medal, and Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star. 1S ome town address IS 2616 Fort Scott Drive, Arlington, Virginia.
