DIVI IO The primary task of the 22 enlisted men and three officers of the Navigation Department is to keep a continuous and accurate plot of the ship's position, and to recommend courses to be steered to the Commanding Officer andfor Officer of the Deck. To this end, RADAR, LORAN, Fathometer and Celestial Lines of Position are used to determine the ship's position. In addition they keep an up-to-date file of all navigational charts and publications for ready reference to any part of the world. A primary function of the Navigation Depart- ment is to keep Air Operations informed of the ship's position for safe vectoring of strike aircraft returning to the ship.
