Chittenden graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis with the Class of 1932. He was commissioned Ensign on June 2nd of that year and, during his first seven years n the Navy, served aboard the USS COLO- RADO, USS PENNSYLVANIA, USS NEW MEXICO and USS QUINCY. Capt. Chittenden underwent flight training' from February of 1935 to May of 1936, being designated a Naval Aviator at the end of that time. He was at Pearl Harbor serving with Patrol Squadron TWENTY-FIVE when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. During the early war years Capt, Chittenden saw duty with Patrol Squadrons SIXTY-TWO and FORTY-THREE in the Aleutians, Later he saw action in North Africa and Okinawa. Since 1944 Capt. Chittenden has had varied duties including tours with the staffs of Fleet Air Wings ONE and FIFTEEN, Commander in Chief Allied Forces, Mediterranean and Commander Naval Air Force, Pa- cific. He also commanded Naval Auxiliary Air Sta- tions at Rodd Field, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Sanford, Florida. Shipboard duties were as Executive Officer of the USS FRANKLIN D. .ROOSEVELT and as C.O. of the USS PR-INCETON. Other service has been with the Bureau of Aero- nautics in Washington, D. C., and courses of instruc- tion at the Army-Navy Staff College and at the Naval War College. He also attended Jet Transitional Train- ing at Olathe, Kansas. Decorations worn by Capt. Chittenden are the Air Medal, Bronze Star with V and ribbons for the Pa- cific Theater with four stars, American Theater, Euro- pean-African Theater, Asian Occupation and the Amer- ican Defense with one star. Capt. Chittenden is married to the former Miss Mary Mitchell of Harrison, Arkansas. They have one daughter, Mrs. Richard M. Gooley of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
