'REAR ADMIRAL RAYMOND N. SHARP U. S. NAVY Raymond Neil Sharp was born on April 9, 1906, in Maryville, Tennessee. He entered the U. S. Naval Acad- emy, Annapolis, Maryland, from his native state, was graduated and commissioned Ensign on June 5, 1930. On July 18, 1958, his selection for the rank of Rear Ad- miral was approved by the President, with date of rank August 1, 1958. iIn May 1931, he reported to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, where he was designated Naval Aviator on June 3, 1932 and completed advanced flight training in July of that year. He joined Fighter Squad- ron TWO, based on the USS LEXINGTON in August 1932, and from July 1935 to May 1937 served in the Panama Canal Zone with Patrol Squadrons TWO and FIVE. Next came duty in the Aviation Unit of the USS BROOKLYN and on board the USS ENTERPRISE for a year, ending June 30, 1941. This was followed by duty as Training Officer at the Naval Air Station, Miami, Florida, until March 1943. He assisted in fitting out the USS YORKTOWN as Assistant Air Officer and later he become her Nav- igator, serving in that capacity until May 20, 1944, He participated in strikes, raids and occupation of Japanese held islands with the YORKTOWN. ' From the YORKTOWN he reported as O t' Officer on the Staff of Commander Carrierpgiilfisciglii THIRTEEN later Ca ' D' ' ' ' l , rrier ivision FIVE. In this as- signment he also acted as Chief of Staff for several months aboa1'd the USS HORNET. During August and September of 1944 he was temporarily assigned to the Staff of Commander Second Carrier Task .Force aboard the USS HANCOCK. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Silver Star Medal for outstanding service in ,the above assign- ments. Upon his return to the United States in.June 1945, he was assigned duty at the Naval A1r.Stat1on, Patux- ent .River, Maryland, as Executive Officer. l-In May of 1948 he joined the USS MIDWAY as Executive Officer, serving in that capacity until July 1949. Next came the Naval War College and then duty as Commandlllg Offl' cer of the Naval Air Reserve Training Unit, Jackson- ville, Florida. In October 1951 he took command of the USS TRIPOLI, a transport carrier, followed by dutv, In the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washing' ton, D. C. On November 22, 1954 he was. ordered.t0 command the USS ESSEX and then as Assistant Chlef of Staff ffor Operationsj of the Staff of the Com- mander in Chief, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. In October 1957 he relieved Rear Admiral A. W. McKeChn1e as Com- mander Carrier Division FIFTEEN and next was as- signed to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operat1onS, Navy Department. On 4 March 1961 Rear Admiral Sharp relieved Rear Admiral F. D. Foley as Commander Carrier Division ONE. In addition to the Silver Star Medal, the LQEIOH Qf Merit, the Commendation Ribbon, the Presidential UNITS Citation Ribbon with stars, and the Navy Unit Com- mendation Ribbon, Rear Admiral Sharp has the AITIGF' ican Defense Service Medal, Fleet Claspg the Am91'1C,an Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal Wlth two silver stars and one bronze star, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Rear Admiral Sharp was married in WaSl11ngt0nv D. C.. on December 21, 1937 to Miss Elizabeth HIEEHSOU of, Washington. Their official residence is 707 Myrtle Avenue, .Johnson City, Tennessee.

Illllll 'TN -f' do 5 413. - F w ' 'rf' 10 x 1. qxx xi r J CAPTAIN JOHN LESTER CHITTENDEN USN, CHIEF OF STAFF, COMCARDIV ONE A native of Massena, New York, Capt. John L. Chittenden graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis with the Class of 1932. He was commissioned Ensign on June 2nd of that year and, during his first seven years n the Navy, served aboard the USS COLO- RADO, USS PENNSYLVANIA, USS NEW MEXICO and USS QUINCY. Capt. Chittenden underwent flight training' from February of 1935 to May of 1936, being designated a Naval Aviator at the end of that time. He was at Pearl Harbor serving with Patrol Squadron TWENTY-FIVE when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. During the early war years Capt, Chittenden saw duty with Patrol Squadrons SIXTY-TWO and FORTY-THREE in the Aleutians, Later he saw action in North Africa and Okinawa. Since 1944 Capt. Chittenden has had varied duties including tours with the staffs of Fleet Air Wings ONE and FIFTEEN, Commander in Chief Allied Forces, Mediterranean and Commander Naval Air Force, Pa- cific. He also commanded Naval Auxiliary Air Sta- tions at Rodd Field, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Sanford, Florida. Shipboard duties were as Executive Officer of the USS FRANKLIN D. .ROOSEVELT and as C.O. of the USS PR-INCETON. Other service has been with the Bureau of Aero- nautics in Washington, D. C., and courses of instruc- tion at the Army-Navy Staff College and at the Naval War College. He also attended Jet Transitional Train- ing at Olathe, Kansas. Decorations worn by Capt. Chittenden are the Air Medal, Bronze Star with V and ribbons for the Pa- cific Theater with four stars, American Theater, Euro- pean-African Theater, Asian Occupation and the Amer- ican Defense with one star. Capt. Chittenden is married to the former Miss Mary Mitchell of Harrison, Arkansas. They have one daughter, Mrs. Richard M. Gooley of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
