Bottomley, Ir., USN, the tenth Commanding Officer of the attack carrier USS Bon Homme Richard assumed command 15 February, 1960, in Yokosuka, Iapan. Upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy on Iune 3, 1937, Capt Bottomley served in the Engineering, Gunnery, and Communications Departments aboard the USS Concord. In February, 1940, he reported to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator on October 15 of that year. During the first half of World War II he participated in many decisive engagements while serving as Material Officer, Gunnery Officer, Flight Officer, Executive Officer and finally Com- manding Officer of Bombing Squadron 3 which was based variously on the aircraft carriers Saratoga, Yorktown Csunk at Midwayb and Enterprise. In this period he was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism in action against Japanese forces in the Battle of Midway, June 4-6, 19427 the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in the Solomon Islands Campaign in August, 1942: and the Presidental Unit Citation awarded the USS Enterprise for heroic service in action. f Returning to the United States after detachment from Bombing Squadron 3 in September, 1943, he became Officer in Charge of the Carrier Suitability Unit at the Naval Air Material Center, Philadelphia, engaged in conducting arrested landings and catapult trials with the latest aircraft. In 1944 while still at NAMC Philadelphia he was awarded the Air Medal for successfully crash landing a burning aircraft to save a crew member who was unable to bail out. , Between June, 1945 and December, 1958 Captain Bottomley served as Executive Officer of gkthe USS Fanshaw Bay, Commanding Officer of the Fanshaw Bay during its decommissioning: Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 131: Commander Carrier Air Group 6: Head of the .Intelligence Requirements Section in the Office of the CNO7 Executive Officer of the USS '+WASP: and Naval Aid to the Honorable Richard Jackson, Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Prior to assuming command of the Bonnie Dick 'Captain Bottomley was the Command- ing Officer of the USS RAINIER. Captain Bottomley is marries' the former Miss Dorothy lane Filbert of Reading, Penn- sylvania.
