3, mE X V 35 - --'llixelll B! cm. nnvm MGCAMPBELL Captain David McCampbell, the ninth Commanding Officer of the Bon Homme Richard, assumed command February 5, 1959 at sea off the Philippine Coast. Captain McCampbell graduated from the Naval Academy in Iune, 1933. In April, 1938 he received his wings as a Naval Aviator at NAS Pensacola after serving as aircraft gunnery observer with Scouting Squadron 11 aboard the USS PORTLAND in a blackshoe billet. His first duty as an aviator was with Fighter Squadron 4 aboard the USS RANGER. During World War II he served on the USS WASP until she was lost at sea in enemy ac- tion in the South Pacific in September, 1942. For conspicuous gallantry, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Commander Air Group 15, during combat against enemy Iapanese aerial forces in the battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf Captain McCampbell received the Congressional Medal of Honor, while embarked in the USS ESSEX. Duties since 1945 include: Chief of ,Staff to Commander Fleet Air, Quonset: Commander Ai! Groups, Hampton Roads: Intelligence Division of the Armed Forces Staff College: Naval Intelligence School, Anacostia: Senior Naval Aviator Advisor to the Argentine Navy: Executive Officer of the USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT: Plans Officer on the staff of Commander Air Forces, Atlantic Fleet: Commanding Officer Naval Air Technical Training Center, Jacksonville: Coordinator of Tests, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River: Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans on the staff of Commander SIXTH Fleet: and Commanding 'Officer of the USS SEVERN. A Among his numerous awards Capt McCampbell holds the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit CEneii1'y'L Actionb, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Presidential Unit Citations. Bottomley, Ir., USN, the tenth Commanding Officer of the attack carrier USS Bon Homme Richard assumed command 15 February, 1960, in Yokosuka, Iapan. Upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy on Iune 3, 1937, Capt Bottomley served in the Engineering, Gunnery, and Communications Departments aboard the USS Concord. In February, 1940, he reported to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator on October 15 of that year. During the first half of World War II he participated in many decisive engagements while serving as Material Officer, Gunnery Officer, Flight Officer, Executive Officer and finally Com- manding Officer of Bombing Squadron 3 which was based variously on the aircraft carriers Saratoga, Yorktown Csunk at Midwayb and Enterprise. In this period he was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism in action against Japanese forces in the Battle of Midway, June 4-6, 19427 the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in the Solomon Islands Campaign in August, 1942: and the Presidental Unit Citation awarded the USS Enterprise for heroic service in action. f Returning to the United States after detachment from Bombing Squadron 3 in September, 1943, he became Officer in Charge of the Carrier Suitability Unit at the Naval Air Material Center, Philadelphia, engaged in conducting arrested landings and catapult trials with the latest aircraft. In 1944 while still at NAMC Philadelphia he was awarded the Air Medal for successfully crash landing a burning aircraft to save a crew member who was unable to bail out. , Between June, 1945 and December, 1958 Captain Bottomley served as Executive Officer of gkthe USS Fanshaw Bay, Commanding Officer of the Fanshaw Bay during its decommissioning: Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 131: Commander Carrier Air Group 6: Head of the .Intelligence Requirements Section in the Office of the CNO7 Executive Officer of the USS '+WASP: and Naval Aid to the Honorable Richard Jackson, Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Prior to assuming command of the Bonnie Dick 'Captain Bottomley was the Command- ing Officer of the USS RAINIER. Captain Bottomley is marries' the former Miss Dorothy lane Filbert of Reading, Penn- sylvania.
