f CAPTAIN F. J. BRUSH, USN Commanding Qflicer Captain Frederick Brush, USN, the seventh Commanding Dflicer of the attack aircraft carrier USS BON I-IDNIIVIE RICI-IARD, assumed command of the giant Hattop Nov. 15, 1956, in Subic Bay, Philippines. Captain Brush was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1931. I-Iis first duty station was the battleship USS COLDRADD. A year later, Captain Brush reported to the cruiser USS PCRTLAND, where he remained until 1935. It was then he reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida, for flight training. In the years prior to World War II, Captain Brush served aboard the USS SARATOGA and the USS PENSYLVANIA as well as the Coco Solo, Panama, and Key West, Florida. In 1942 Captain Brush was Gunnery Qfhcer on the Staff of Commander, Air Force Atlantic Fleet. From 1943 until 1944 he served as commander, Air Group 81, attached to the USS WASP QCVA-185 operating with Carrier Task Force 58 and 58. In the last year of the war, Captain Brush became Executive Dfhcer of the carrier USS COWPENS. I-Ie later became Commanding OH-icer, and in that capacity prepared the ship for the Reserve Fleet. Duty stations since the war include Executive Dfhcer at NAS Jacksonville, Dperations Officer, Fleet Air Wing Two at Pearl I-Iarbor, and year at the Naval War College. This was followed by two years duty with DCND QAirj in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. I-Ie then commanded the USS POINT CRUCZ QCVE-1193, during which period the ship was deployed to the Far East with Com Car Div 17, Rear Admiral Russell embarked. This was followed by a tour with the Strategic Plans Division in the ofhce of the Chief of Naval Cperations. A resident of Falls Church, Virginia, Captain Brush is married to the former Isabelle Churchill. The Brushes have three children. Captain Brush has been awarded the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, the distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal fwith two gold starsj, the Navy Commendation,.and the Navy Unit Commendation.
