Thus, still intact, the two Panther squadrons, Corsair squadron, and Skyraider squadron were ordered to AirPac and the U.S.S. BON HOMME RICHARD. Detachments from VC-4, VC-12, VC-33, and VC-61 were assigned to the group to complete the combat team. ' Commanded by Commander Gaylord B. VC-18 part- icipated in the strikes against Attu in the Aleutians in May and June of that year. The squadron was later reformed with thirty-six F6F's and returned to combat in June of 1944, aboard the USS INTREPID. This tour carried the squadron through the Palau, Philippines, Leyte, and Okinawa cam- paigns. On this cruise the Fickle Finger Squadron , thus known because of the gesturing devil insignia, was credited with 172 kills in the air, 300 planes destroyed on the ground, with assists in sinking the Japanese battleships MUSASHI and YAMATO. A triumphant return was made to the United States late in 1944 after which the squadron was redesignated VF-18, moved to San Diego, and outfitted with FSF Bearcats. In October 1945, the squadron moved to its present home port at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, where families resided and waited for those brief periods between the many cruises in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean. Shortly after being redesignated and named, Fighting Seventy One, proudly accepted for service the new F9F-2 Panthers in December 1949. Since that time the pilots have flown more than 13,000 hours and have made more than 2,500 carrier landings in the versatile Panther. Under the able leadership of Commander John S. Hill, USN, Fighting Seventy One has carried the war to the Com- munists in Korea. The months and years of training accom- plished while operating in and out of Quonset Point have made the change-over to combat flying a smooth one. The spirit of teamwork has contributed largely to the success of each combat mission as well as to the high degree of main- tenance availability provided by the men. My X This fighting jet squadron launched its career in F6F Hellcats in 1945 engaging in Pacific campaigns in the latter part of World War Il. Originally known as VBF- 18 and later redesignated VF-7A, the squadron currently became VF-72 and moved to NAS, Quonset Point, R.I., its home port, in 1916. From the time of its original commissioning Fighter Squadron SEVENTY-TVVO had made more than twenty major cruises including many Atlantic Fleet exercises, four Mediterranean cruises, three to the Caribbean, a South American cruise to Argentina, and two North Atlantic cruises. The squadron has a unique distinction of having flown nothing but Grumman aircraft and of operating the last F8F Bearcat aircraft in the fleet. Transition from F8F's to the F9F Panther jet aircraft was made in April 1951 and on complete outfitting the squadron went aboard the U.S.S. F.D. ROOSEVELT QCVB-421 for carrier qualification. Shortly afterwards F9F-5s were received and a six month period of service tCSt flying commenced. In late 1951 the squadron was alerted for another Mediterranean cruise, however, prior to deploy- ment, orders were received to VVestPac and duty in the Korean Theater. Prior to departure for the West Coast the squadron was again equipped with the F9F-2 and once more commenced an intensive training period in preparation for combat duty. Day and night qualifica- tions on board the U.S.S. LEYTE QCV-321 completed the extensive carrier and ordnance training schedule, followed by the ferrying of all 16 F9F's across country to San Diego and the U.S.S. BON HOMME RICHARD CCV-3lj. The many hours of rocket firing and glide bombing at Quonset Point have paid real dividends as attested to by the excellent results obtained to date in the Korean combat area. The excellent availability of aircraft and performance of ordnance equipment attest to the ability and splendid performance of the crew. The squadron l1as been under the comamnd of LCDR A. W. The Sunday Punchers are based at the NAS, Quonset Point, Rhode Island and the squadron has been active in the Atlantic Fleet. In the last few years, VA-75 has participated in a cold weather cruise, several Caribbean cruises, four Mediterranean cruises, plus numerous demonstration and qualilication cruises. The Sunday Punchers have served aboard the LEYTE, PHILIPPINE SEA, MIDWAY, ROOSEVELT, TARAWA, KEARSARGE and in World War II operated in the Pacific aboard the INTREPID. When the Korean Hostilities began, VA-75 was ordered to the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean to bolster the Naval Forces in that area. The squadron operated aboard the MIDWAY, During leave and recreation, the officers and men took advantage of every opportunity to assimilate the culture of Europe and the Mediterranean visiting Spain, France, Italy, Greece, North Africa, Lebanon, and other countries. They saw the historic landmarks of Europe and the sites where Western civilization began. H' K' In the early part of 1951, the squadron was sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A great part of the time was spent in shaking down the TARAWA, fresh out of mothballs. Training flights were made over most of the Caribbean area including Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and numerous other islands and forei n or g p ts. During the summer, the Punchers operated aboard the FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT for both demonstrations and operational development of electronic gear. Early in 1952, VA-75 was tentatively scheduled for another Mediterranean cruise. However, notice was received that this cruise was Cancelled and the Squadfgn would be dgploygd to the Far East in mid-May. An intensive training period ensued both in the New England area and requalification aboard the LEYTE. In the Korean Conflict the Douglas Skyraider, which the Squadron flies at present, has won universal acclaim for its magni- ficent performance in close air support of our own troops and in offensive strike missions. Its ability to carry tremendous tonnage of bombs, napalm and rockets, not to mention its fixed forward firepower of four 20mm cannon makes it the most feared and lethal aircraft in the combat area today. W A World War II realization of the need for pilots highly trained in the intricacies of fighter photographic reconnaissance, resulted in the estab- lishment of Composite Squadron Sixty- One after the outbreak of the Korean War. Formerly operating both single-place and multi-engined aircraft under one administrative title, VC-61 became, on 20 January 1951, strictly a fighter photographic reconnaissance squadron with the purpose of provid- ing specialized teams to all CV-type carriers operating under the United Nations flag off the coast of Korea. Based permanently at Miramar, Cali- fornia, VC-61 continues to train and release to the carriers heading west, highly specialized photo teams whose aerial cameras, on over 3000 combat photo missions, have provided the primary source of intelligence in the Korean War. VC-61 was represented aboard the BON HOMME RICHARD by Photo Unit Nan first led by LT C H YEAGLE who was wounded by flak late in September and then by LT B R SMITH Flying both Panther and Banshee jets, mounting cameras instead of guns the pilots of Unit Nan ranged the length and breadth of Korea on such varied assignments as route surveilla nces mapping damage assessments target searches and anti aircraft de fenses studies. Th h e t ousands of finely detailed pictures obtained through more than two hundred photo sorties contributed materially to the successful and s stemat d r. It is the mission of the Air Department to provide the services and facilities needed by the embarked Air Group to conduct all phases of air operations with maximum effectiveness, to insure a high state of combat readiness by training and exercise of individuals and crews in wartime duties and to maintain material pre- paredness by thorough upkeep of equipment and parts of the ship assigned, along with complete allawances of necessary operational gear and spare parts. When a Red in North Korea jumps for cover at the approach of a BON HOMME RICHARD plane, he is running from a lot of people. His well-founded fear and his eventual destruction are the result of a con- certed effort. The Air Department is a team of six divisions which work together not only to get the aircraft of the BON HOMME RICHARD safety on and off the ship, but to assist the Air Group inkeeping the planes in fighting trim and loaded for bear when they go. On the flight deck the V-1 Division personnel perform the endless job a launch and to make room for recovery. They work speed and care so that they are positioned correctly for a launch and to make room for recovery. They work in rain, sun, cold or heat. They work in a whil of deadly propellers and in hot, powerful jet blasts. In a business where a slip can-and usually does-mean injury they push lanes until they are packed tightly s P ' and correctly. It takes headwork, plenty of work, Steady herves, and some bruises here and there to get the job done. V-l is made up of men who are strong, who know their jobs and can do it, Naturally, it takes more than pushing Planes IO COI1dUCt carrier flight operations. I can speak with authority, for I have been aboard since the BHR was recommissioned. My age? Well, according to dog-reckoning, I am seven years old, but according to people-reckoning, I am about 40 years old. My authority stems from the fact that I have five and a half years of sea-duty behind me. Among other things, I have a GQ station, a fancy life jacket, my own records, ID card, inoculation card, and dog tags, I can wear the navy Occupation, China Service, Korean and the United Nations Ribbons. I have two roommates who treat me very well. One is my owner, LT. E. A. O'Brien, the First Lieutenant, and he is the fellow whom I help with his job all the time. My other roommate is Major Ed Lewis of the Marine Corps, and I think that I will miss him when he leaves the ship. Well, that is about all that there is to tell about me, I do have one little worry at the present time, but perhaps it may not be too bad. I have been watching the punishments which the Captain hands out at Captain's Mast, and maybe extra duty will not be too hard, just so he does not say, Solitary Confinement. fEd. Note: Butch is awaiting Captain's Mast for Unauthorized Absence for sixteen hours while we were at Yokosuka. From CIC to the Bridge, the oflicdfs and men of the Depart- ment have been welded into a closely knit organization toiling around the clock in the tasks involved in Air Intelligence, Communications, Combat In- formation, Photography, Air Operations and Aerology, to enable the ship to fulfill its mission successfully. Many are the functions of this Department, and its work is just as varied. There is the humming, buzzing, ticking and the static in the radio shacks so carefully concealed in the superstructure, Hashing and CDR T. L. CONROY USN CDR O. O. DEAN USN receiving messages to and from the outside world. The Aerology Office, so important in an operating area, containing talk of Williwaws, typhoons, hurricanes, ballistic winds and densities, prepares the fore- casts and also the weather maps for the Air Group. As a contrast, Air Intelligence Oflice is brightly lighted, show- ing maps, charts, photographs, displays on bulkheads, sliding panels, reports, summaries, battle action reports, and the numer- ous booklets constantly being prepared there. Then there is the Photographic Laboratory, from which comes the steady stream and graphic picture of the success of the missions as- signed to the BON HOMME RICHARD pilots. Last, but no means least, is Air Plot buzzing with activity during control of the BHR planes while taking care of their assigned targets, and then guiding them back again to the home roost. These are the reasons why the Operations Department is said to be the eyes, ears, voice, and nerve center of the BON HOMME RICHARD. The ships main battery of 5 guns is manned and maintained by men from the Second and Third Divisions. The Fourth and Fifth Divisions have the responsibility for the 40mm battery. The ship's Marine De- tachment, which comprises the Sixth Division, besides furnishing the guard of the day and various orderlies, mans one 5 mount and three 40mm quad mounts. They also have Q charge of the ship's armory and they supervise the handling and stowage of all ordnance, including bombs and rockets. The age of the adolescents ranged from 15 to l7 years. The youngest and smallest of the lot was named CHIE SONG HO. He was near death as he was hoisted aboard the Destroyer and a great burly Boatswain's Mate fed him nourishment. He was transferred to this vessel for care as soon as he was able to be MM 4 wwf moved. He was, in addition to the starving condition he suffered, very ill with parasitic infestation and general inanition. We nursed him back to health. During his 25 day stay aboard. He became devotedly attached to C. DE PASQUALE, Hospitalman Third, who became his foster father. The corpsmen made a pet of him. He met the Admiral and the Captain, learned to speak a little and to write a few words of English, made friends with many people, had a cake baked in his honor and, with DE PASQUALE, stood the duty in the sick bay in a military manner in his little cutdown dungarees Qwith knife attachedj. His story is long and sad and re- flects the human discontent and misery of a dignified people whose, civilization became chaotic with war. CHIE SONG HO left us with great sorrow and was taken to a Korean refuge for care and training. The corpsmen were a glum lot for days following his departure. .-f- M , WMWQ W ' f f xW' A W jf, ,y f r The Engineering Department, headed by Commander R. H. The Division l1as two distinct groups, the Quartermasters and the Band. ' The Quartermasters work directly with and under the Navigator in maintaining a continuous knowledge of the ship's position. They use, maintain and correct navigational instruments, charts, and other necessary publications. They maintain all personal, national and foreign flags. One of their little known tasks, is the care and the winding of the ship's 123 clocks. These men also stand watches in the Chart House, on the Bridge and in steering aft. ' The Band furnishes the ship's music on both formal and informal occasions. It furnishes the music at colors, reception of distinguished visitors, and at other cere- monies. It provides music for the crews of the vessels replenishing the BON HOMME RICHARD on re- plenishment days, also during the noon and evening meal hours for the crew, at happy hours, and at ship's dances. It frequently provides music for divisional or departmental parties. It also provides music for ship- board religious services. Although the Division is small, much is done for the welfare of each member of the crew by this Division. NEVE '7' .V- -AA. -if-1 C MDCK TO FIND OU1' TONORROL0 WHERE' UJE Sl .-1 ,gp-... CDR M. F. As a service organization, it has proved itself to be a very friendly octopus. ' Headed by COMMANDER CHARLES STEIN, Jr., the Supply Department has per- formed its many functions in a very creditable , manner. The personnel of the Department have achieved their mission of maintaining the highest fighting efficiency of the ship. She's not much on liberty, but she's sure a feeder, are words heard often in commenting on the quality and the quantity of the food served in the General Mess, as well as the other messes aboard. Many times the men preparing and serving the food have done so under trying conditions. q A The Disbursing Office sees to it that the pay l and other financial questions of the crew are properly handled. Allotments, bonds, insur- ance, .travel claims, and special pay, are all part of the job assigned to this Office. Thousands of items are issued and stored in ' the General Stores and Spare Parts storerooms. Receiving, stowing, issuing, inventorying, crating, and reams of paper-work, are accomplished by the storekeepers to keep the ship supplied with the materials required to keep it operating smoothly. Aviation Supply has the task of procuring, receiving, stowing and issuing aeronautical supplies required by the Air Department and the squadrons operating from this ship. The low record of AOG'S faircraft grounded due to 'lack of spare partsj shows the efficiency of performance of the Aviation Stores personnel and rates them the best of any carrier in WesPac. Q Finally, the Supply Department has the Gedunk .standslpresenting the opportunity for ice cream, candy, cookies, and all of the other morale builders. Chinaware and silk to send home, coke machines, tailor shops, laundry, cobbler shop, all the conveniences of Main Street back home. These are a few of the tasks assigned to the Supply Depart- ment, where, because of the high quality of performance of the store-keepers and Ship's Servicemen, there is never a dissatisfied customer.
