In order to master these problems, we must possess certain basic qualities. High school, as the chief contributor to the development of the whole person, forms these important qualities. Scholastic endeavor produces a well-educated individual with a sound mind, sports and physical education build strength, co-ordination, and poise in body, while social activities create character and personality. High school, therefore, is a basic step in the formula leading to success in the future ttor it develops those traits that are so necessary in enabling us to solve our problems. gf J ny vw ' -.f f f ,. fa' 3 , A N . Without the superior training of fine coaches, the outstanding athletic program of the 1959-60 season could not have been made possible. Whether faced with victory or defeat, both the teams and students have maintained a driving spirit-one that will continue in following years. 4 V012 -4 N. Y FOOTBALL The 1959 Boardman Spartans under head coach Jerry Thorpe and assistant coaches Steve Sonoga, Neil Williams, Dick Selby, Mike Grovnak, Ed Lugibuhl, and Bob Dressel had a successful season although they won only three while they lost six. Boardman looked im- pressive in pre-season scrimmages, but the team was hindered during the season by many nnluries. Beating our arch rival Poland and being the only Ohio team to score against sixth- ranked Salem were the highlights ofthe season. 'WJ A LEFT TO RIGHT Mr Neil Williams Mr Steve Sonoga Mr Jerry Thorpe Mr Richard Selby These coaches devoting many hours to working with the players and planning strategy took setbacks in stride and made it a certainty that we always fielded a well coached team VARSITY SEASON RECORD 1959 Boardman Boardman Boardman Boardman Boardman Boardman Boardman Boardman Poland Cambell Memorial Niles McKinley Girard Hubba rd Salem Struthers Fitch ,,,-,,,-,,..20 -..V--..f----m ...,-,,,,,.. ARCH ERY Safety is first - this is the motto of the Boardman High School Archery Club of 1960, ln addition to safety, the members of the club have been stressing good sports- manship. Following these fine practices, under the direction of Mr. Adolf Burkhardt, has resulted in a very successful year for the club. TENNIS The talented members of the tennis team, under the coaching of Mr. Garver, achieved a fine record in their league competition this year. Their final record was: 2 wins, 3 losses, and I tie. The members of the team consider tennis to be a great sport, one that brings a great deal of eri- ioyment and creates a competitive spirit among each of the members. S. Koval. X. That was a swell game! GOLF The 1959 golf team was composed of a Junior and two Soph- omores. They had a very active season participating in matches. Their excellent record was 7 wins and 2 losses. This is one of the best seasons a Boardman golf team has ever had, and they are hoping to do even better next year. Left to right, FIRST ROW: D, Stoner, J. Pochiro, R. Loesch, F. Meyers. CHEERLEADERS The greatest inspiration behind a team is the full support of the student body as they cheer them on to victory. The persons most responsible for arousing this support among the students are the cheer- leaders. This year they have introduced a number of new cheers which have added even more to the enthusiasm of the students. The energetic spirit of our cheerleaders of l959-60 could hardly be surpassed. They provide opportunities for students to form lead- ership as an officer of an organization and indi- vidual cooperation and responsibility as a member. They enable students to develop special tal- ents as well as to gain a wider knowledge of their interests for future careers. Other clubs may strengthen character and ideals and encourage a greater enthusiasm for school spirit. The necessity of many worth-while activities is apparent through the multiple gains which they provide. Boardman High School students are for- tunate in being offered such a wide variety of ac- tivities. k ,,, 4. ,. +4 af :wr 1 iff' W Y I sl - r' ' K fa ,r. xfl . xf.f:, - 'i .aifsufi 'i ,gr ,Q -,. - M Q :I , , , 4. 4 A f A X I f' ,A -fm., 1 ., vii x ' V HW -.' .
