Early Gridiron Hopes Lost Yardage During Season Junior Calvin, Gary Gillum , and Bob Hickerson were among the outstanding players picked by league coaches for positions on the '73 All-League teams. Calvin merited first-team offense and second-team defense. Gillum was chosen for second-team defense. Hickerson received Honorable Mention. Early season hopes were high with the size of the starting line- up, the largest in the league. Average weight from tackle to tackle was an enormous 225 lbs. But they just couldn't seem to get it together to win a game. It looked like a long year until Bluestem beat arch rivals Douglass. Sweeping this game , the Lions went on to win against Pretty Prairie finishing the season seventh in the league. Junior Calvin led the team , setting a new school rushing record with a total of 888 yards. He also broke the single game rushing record with a re- markable 212 yards total. What a year. A season of dis- appointments and disgust, but yet a year of hope and spirit. Junior Clavin, Bluestem senior, was also selected as an ALL- AMERICAN. He was honored for 'definite evidence of excellence to the highest ideals of sportsman- ship through competitive athletics.
