1972-73 - a year of memories and excitementf All the students of Leon High School lej? the old school this year, some to the new school, Bluestem, and some to encounter llif-8,5 responsibilities. For many, the thought of leaving the old high school and going to other persuits was an exciting experience. But still, for most of the seniors and underclassmen, 1973 will be one year to remember. Football games, cross country, and girls' volley- ball games began. Class organizations planned projects such as senior maga- zine sales for the year. Football season and indoor practice began as days grew colder. The dress code committee worked on the handbook to change the dress code. New school construction was slowed with wintry weather, but November ended with a short vacation to brighten students' spirits. Maybe the teach ers just skipped a test or let the students lead the class discussion, but the holiday spirit was strong and vibrant Sports were important during this month. The Lions lifted their records to the top in both wrestling and bas- ketball. Preparation for toumaments was their direct goal. The long-awaited vacation arrived to finish the 1972 year. A 1?-'S 5 .mliurm Sports activities, toumaments, competed with Mr. Weatherman during February as the snow drifted across the campus of LHS. A change in the dress code became effective. I5 March Brought Rain, 3 XXX 'ge 4' NX NX m X m w. March was a month of weather. Tempera- tures ranged from lower 20's to upper 60's. But most of the month was continuous rain. School builders lost valuable time, ranchers lost cattle, and everyone lost patience, Activities were also varied. Basketball sea- son ended with state toumament, band and mu- sic classes participated in SCKL contests, track season opened for both girls and boys, senior play practice got underway, and the 1972-73 Rain, and More Rain ,Yip xx ai x- 5'-vgv' athletes were given recognition at the A11- Sports Reception and Dance. 1 lil! 3. -X 'ff X f X I WA? ff, L AW 243312-Saw 412.4 Anxiety for Summer Compliments of HANDICRAFT DECO ART Augusta, Kansas truck in April Along with April flowers came studying for business and music contests, decorating for prom and going to far-away track meets. The pace soon began to get faster as students stud- ax ied for final exams. ATHLETICS In this fresh evening each blade and leaf looks as if it had been dipped in an icy liquid greenness. David Thoreau ll! Craig McElroy Cross Country Road ver H ill, 'ver Dale Craig McElroy set the pace for the Leon cross-country team throughout the 1972 season. He is a two-year letterman in this sport and we have high hopes for him next year. Craig placed in regional competition and from there went to state. He represented Leon quite well. They finished the season with a 5-2 league record and a 13-8 overall record. The boys went into the Regional Tourna- ment with a first place District trophy and high hopes of advancing into the State, but their hopes were deflated when Halstead downed the Lions in the first game. After the season, the SCKL coacnes selected the top ten league performers. Three Leon boys were chosen for these honors. They were Se- niors , Sam Seward and Gene Calvin and Junior, Junior Calvin. K Girls Took Regionalsg Went on to State Leon ended their 1972 volleyball season with a 7-4 winning record, With spirit and determination the girls worked their way towards the regional tour- nament. The girls, filled with excitement, put forth a great effort, and with a great deal of enthusiasm won first at the regional toumament. They went on to state, but came home without a win. Even though the girls didn't place at state, they gained new ideas in hopes for an even more successful future. Band Added Gusto to School Year Providing entertainment at ball games and play- ing songs at the Spring musical were two of the band's activities for the 1972-73 school year. Under the direction of Mr. Craig Cruitt, instru- mental ensembles were taken to contest. Clarinet Quintet, composed of Carey Flattery, Julie Peterson, Peggy Hearne, Debbie O'Bryan, and Deandra Daniels, received a I for their contest arrangement. Flute Trio, consisted of Leslie Henn, Lyn Doyal, and Hope Holem. A II rating was given to 'them. Another II was awarded to Jill Gibb in recognition for her trumpet solo. The other band ensemble representing Leon, was the Brass Sextet. LeRoy Wolf, Richard Pharr, Todd Kingsley, Travis Cagle, Monte King, and Jill Gibb are the individuals who made up this group. Leon, Pep Club Roared With Spirit The 1972-'73 Pep Club, with sixty-eight members, was busy helping with concessions, attending ballgames and matches, and havincg a lot of fun at the same time. In the summer, Pep lub sold Leon Lion T-shirts and managed three firecracker stands. 'I'he money was used in assisting cheerleaders purchase uniforms. Pep Club also made new uniforms to brighten their spirits. During the summer, a committee, selected three outfits, one to be chosen by a vote by Pep Club mem- bers. Another phase of Pep Club was the spirit-minded cheerleading squad. For the '72-'73 year, a method of selection recommended by student study committee was tried. Ten girls were elected cheerleaders by the students, Each girl who tried out for cheerleader de- signated her choice between basketball and wrestling. The top five were A-team football - Kathy McCoy, Head Chearleader, Debbie Petersen, Diane Proctor, Ava Allen, and Deandra Daniels. These girls attended ICF camp at Lawrence, B-team football-cross country cheerleaders were Rene Lakin, Head Cheerleader, Peggy Ades, Della Cha sak, Vickie Young, and Susan Petersen. After football season, the A and B team squads re- organized as basketball and wrestling squads.
