KT EDICATIDN ' . f I: DEDICATION The Senior Class of 1949 wish to dedicate this annual to the school that most of us have attended throughout the twelve years of our school life. Blue Springs School has been an important landmark in our lives and it will continue to represent the happy and useful years that it has been our good fortune to have spent there. We leave regretfully, but also thankfully for all that we have learned while attending our school. APPRECIATION The Senior Class of 1949 wish to take this opportunity to ex- press our appreciation to the Board Members, the Faculty, our parents, and our schoolmates, who, in their turn, have made school life for each of us something worth striving for. We shall always remember that life cannot be independent if it is to be successful. Z CULTY 1 MR. P, W, LETT Principal MR. CURTIS EILAND Vocational Agriculture MRS. I-lorrxeroom Advisor lay CLASS HISTROY On a bright September morning in the year 1937, Mrs. E. J. Strickland kissed her daughter, Rosie Lee, and put her on the school bus. This was to be Rosie Lee's first day at school and she was entering the Blue Spring's first grade. During Rosie Lee's first year at school she was guided by Miss Anne Mae Boyd and the principal, Mr. Adkinson. There were approximately thirty-five members of the first grade that year. During the next four years there were several withdrawals frorn Rosie Lee's classes, but no notable entries. Rosie was promoted to the sixth grade after completing a very successful year in the fifth. Her teacher for the year was Mrs. Henderson. During the year Ruth Henderson transferred to the Blue Springs school and joined Rosie Lee and her classmates. At the end of the sixth year there were several students left behind and others withdrew from school, leaving approximately twenty-five students to enter the seventh grade. In the seventh grade Rosie Lee, Ruth andthe other members of their class were joined by Roland Thorne who transferred from a school in Florida. At the end of the seventh year several students failed and still more students left school or transferred. The following year Earl Morrison transferred to Blue Springs school from Texasville to become a member of the class to graduate in 1949. During the next two years the number in Rosie Lee, Roland, Ruth, and Earl's class dimish ed by the usual methods and in the eleventh grade there were about fifteen members of the class, until Theresa Williams entered. Theresa was able to do this by doing extra work at Troy State Teacher's College one summer. Dur- ing their eleventh year at school all of the students of the eleventh grade, with the exception of Roland, Rosie Lee, Ruth, Earl, and Theresa, withdrew from school either to be married, transfer to other schools or go to work. In the twelfth year the Senior Class was joined by Gwendolyn Beaty and Margaret jewel Morrison. These two new members entered the twelfth grade from the tenth grade. They were able to do this by taking a correspondence course and taking extra subjects each year. As the school year of 1949 draws to a close it is sad to note that only one member of the 1937 class is graduating from the Blue Springs High School, yet we are proud of the new members of our class and throughout this year we have become united as though we began our school years together. 7 SENIOR CLASS WILL We, the Class of 1949, in the town of Blue Springs, the County of Barbour, and the State of Alabama, being in as good mental condition as usual, and in much better temper than usual, do hereby make this our last will and testament. In this manner we dispose of our posses- sions: ' GWENDOLYN BEATY leaves her ability to make twelve grades in eleven years to Don Littlefield. Don, at least you must try to make it in twelve years. HUGH GARDNER leaves his height to Ludie Fralish. You had better get started, Ludie. RUTH HENDERSON leaves her 'lcurly hair to Sylvia Pitts. Now, you may toss away those curlers. MARGARET JEWEL MORRISON gives to Maggie Lou Walker her rornance with Wendell Brown. Good luck, Maggie. EARL MORRISON leaves his quietness to Reggie Parr. Reggie can certainly use some. ROSIE LEE STRICKLAND leaves her eye-catching figure to Peggy English. She certainly can't afford to miss a day eating in the lunch room. ROLAND THORNE gives to Howell Wilkinson his way with the women. Don't be bashful, Howell, for you must carry on. THERESA WILLIAMS leaves her Hflirtatious ability to Hilda I-lelms. Slow down, Hilda, if you want to be the success that Theresa is. 8 SENIOR C LASS PROPHECY Now, wait a minute, students! Let's hear about the lives of the members of the Class of '49 and maybe you will understand why I want to go back to my dear ole Alma Mater. Remember nice, quiet and definitely dignified Earl Morrison. Well, Earl is now president of Spio's First National Bank. He is smoking fifty cent cigars and driving a nice, new Cadillac to his home, only twelve feet from the bank. Rosie Lee Strickland was always active in school functions and was very dramatic. She has realized a lifelong ambition to act on the stage and screen. Rosie Lee will take a plane in early june to replace Minnie Pearl in the motion picture The Adorable In'1p . She expects her fiance, Clark Gable, to join her in the film colony. Mr. Gable has been visiting her family at Tyler's store. - As a child Hugh Gardner had dreams of becoming a sailor. Never did he realize that he would become such an important sailor. Admiral Gardner is now home on leave after confering with the President in Washington. His braid was so heavy when he arrived that it took four mule tearns to bring it from the station. Theresa Williams was always popular with the boys and during schooldays there were many predictions that she would be the first bride oi our class. Theresa is now an old maid school teacher. She has gotten grey worrying over which of her many beaus to marry. I noticed in a Washington newspaper a few days ago that our former class- mate, Gwendolm Beaty, was doing quite well in politics. During her Senior year in school Gwen was President of the Student Council and today she is secretary to the secretary of the Washington dog catcher. Blue Springs Wins Another Ballgamei And well that it should, as none other than our own Roland Thorne is the coach there this year. The only trouble he seems to be having, is with the basketball teamg they all insist on calling him Papa , The team is composed of Roland's five sons. Remember how we all used to dread those hateful old blood tests. This year Margaret jewel Morrison is State Health nurse and seems to get fiend- ish pleasure out of drawing blood from all her old schoolmates. Ruth Henderson is another of the members of the '49 class interested in politics. She is representative from Barbour County in the state legislature. At the present time Ruth is fighting for a law in which women may ask a man to marry her rather than the old outmoded way. 9 fi UNDERGRADS EUDON FLYNN Football '48: Baskelaall '48g cqms --B 'ram 4 '49: Baaball '48, '49s B Clda reporter: F.F.A.: Commercial Club: Annual Business Manager: junior Play '4'l: FFA Quartet DON LITTLEFIELD Football '4'l,'48, Captalng Basketball '48, '49g B Club 3 F. In county competition our B team won over a strong Clayton five, by a score of Z3-20. Following is a description of the tournament and final game by Eudon Flynn who is captain of the B team and plays the position of center. After playing and defeating, Eufaula's B team 19-2.8, and Clio 41-13 we came to the main event, the third and final game with Clayton. All the boys were nervous because the trophy was at stake. At the begin- ning of the game all looked mighty disappointed for good ole Blue Springs. Clayton made the first field goal to start the game rolling. At the end of the first quarter the score showed Clayton leading 5-6. In the second ' quarter Blue Springs began to rack up the points, and at the half the score was 15-9 in our favor. At the beginning of the third quarter it began to get a little touchy--although the game was still in our favor, the score be- ing 18-15. By the third quarter our boys began to get nervous and throw the ball away. Then Mr. Sibert told us to settle down and play with the ball more. Until thelast four minutes of the game the score was Z1-Z0 in our favor. This is where we started the sincere and fighting spirit. The ball was passed smoothly enough, Clayton hardly touched the ball. In the last fifty seconds the score was still 2.0-21, until our small fighting hero, Billy joe Woodham, faked a careless Clayton man off and made the last two points which clinched the game as the whistle blew. We all felt mighty proud of ourselves because we knew this had been a good clean ball game. We just out-played the Clayton team. After the next game the trophies were given out and being captain of the team I went out on the floor to receive the prize. To me this was about the biggest moment of my life, because this was the first trophy won by Blue Springs since 1925, a period of twenty-four years. But I am quite sure it won't be our last. OUR HATS ARE OFF TO DELANE WILKINSONZ!!! Delane Wilkinson was chosen as the most outstanding player in bas- ketball competition for Barbour County this year. I know that this is something that is close to the hearts of every student, to receive honor in some field of competitive achievement. Delane Wilkinson, the students and the faculty of Blue Springs High School are proud of you and your achievement and more so they are proud of what you represent- -honor, sportsmanship, and ability. You are a crowning achievement for the school and community. Z 0 1 1 r FX F. H. A. Theresa Williams, who played a roguish seventeen- year old Betty Lou Gordon, had to act eleven years old to give her mother's romance a helping hand. Pamela Gordon, the mother played by Gwendolyn Beaty, was a pretty widow who told a wealthy admirer that she was only twenty-nine! Complications arose when two old beaus played by Hugh Gardner and Earl Morrison, one of mother's and one of grandmother's Ruth Henderson, arrive and act as a butler and cook to break up the new romances between Pamela and Dilworth Pickrell, Reginald Parr. To further complicate matters, Betty Lou falls in love with Ross Waldon, Roland Thorne, a cousin of Dilworth's who is already engaged to Winston's snooty ward, Miria.m Wilkinson. Two other outstanding characters were Margaret jewel Morrison as the doleful daughter of Pam's old beau and Rosie Lee Strickland, the bucolic maid whose side splitting remarks left the audience in stitches. The Senior Class appreciated the assistance given by Charlotte Scarborough, Sylvia Pitts, Floyd Ryals, Mrs. Sibert, and the Home Economic s Department. Most Popular . . Most Studious . .
